Wayanad Hit by Landslides

  • The death toll rose to 276, with over 200 injured as of August 1 morning, following a series of devastating landslides in the hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala's Wayanad district. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed that 240 people remain missing, while more than 1,500 were rescued from the affected areas. Chief Minister Vijayan is in Wayanad, accompanied by Chief Secretary V. Venu and DGP Shaik Darvesh Sahib.

Periyar Tiger Reserve's Innovative Wind Turbine Installation

  • In a groundbreaking initiative, Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Thekkady, Kerala installed a wind turbine to power real-time monitoring cameras and Wi-Fi connectivity within its expansive forest. This move marks a significant advancement in the reserve's efforts to enhance conservation technology and communication.
  • The PTR East Division, encompassing 17 forest sections, previously relied on solar power for wireless communication and operational needs. However, the inefficiencies caused by the foggy climate and heavy rainfall often hindered the effectiveness of solar panels. The newly installed wind turbine aims to address these challenges by providing a more reliable energy source for monitoring and communication systems.

  • The National Housing Bank announced that Sanjay Shukla officially taken on the role of Managing Director (MD). A seasoned chartered accountant with over three decades of experience in housing and retail asset finance, Shukla has a distinguished history of leading and transforming financial institutions.
  • He began his career in 1991 as an officer at LIC Housing Finance Limited. Shukla's career also includes key positions such as business head of consumer assets at ING Vysya Bank, where he was instrumental in establishing and expanding the consumer loan segment. He played a critical role in launching Tata Capital's retail housing finance business as its first business head.
  • Before joining NHB, Shukla was the founding managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Centrum Housing Finance Limited (CHFL) from October 2016.

Thales, Garuda Join Hands to Build Secure Drone Operations in India

  • Aerospace industry leaders Thales and Garuda Aerospace announced a collaboration to promote the development of the drone ecosystem in India.

India to Host Third Global South Summit in August 2024

  • India will be hosting the third edition of the Global South Summit next month, around August 17. The summit, which will take place in virtual mode, will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside the meetings at ministerial level. Currently, New Delhi is sending out invites, with sources in various global capitals confirming that they have received the invites.
  • The August 2024 edition of the summit will be the first such edition of the summit under Prime Minister Modi's third term in power.
  • Officially referred to as the 'Summit of the Global South', the first edition of the summit took place in January 2023 in the year of India's G20 presidency. India by hosting this summit plans to provide a platform for countries of the Global South to share their perspectives, challenges and priorities on a common platform.
  • The second edition of the summit took place in November 2023 after the New Delhi G20 leaders' summit in September.
  • The theme of the inaugural summit was 'Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose', and the theme of the second summit was 'Together, for Everyone's Growth, with Everyone's Trust'.

Preeti Sudan New UPSC Chief

  • Preeti Sudan was appointed as the new Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Her appointment was sanctioned under Article 316A of the Indian Constitution and came in the wake of the resignation of ex-chairperson of UPSC, Manoj Soni.
  • Sudan, who has been a member of the UPSC since November 29, 2022, will serve as Chairperson until her retirement in April 2025, when she reaches the age of 65.
  • Preeti Sudan brings a wealth of experience to her new role, with approximately 37 years in government administration. Her tenure as Union Health Secretary spanned from 2017 to July 2020, during which she played a pivotal role in the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the final six months of her service.

C. P. Radhakrishnan Sworn in As Governor of Maharashtra

  • C. P. Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra.
  • He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya.
  • C. P. Radhakrishnan, the 21st Governor of Maharashtra since the state was formed in 1960, succeeded Ramesh Bais.
  • Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, other ministers and senior officials were present at the function at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan.
  • C. P. Radhakrishnan served as Governor of Jharkhand for nearly one and a half years prior to his new appointment.

  • Deputy Director General (Sea Training) Inspector General Anupam Rai highlighted the significance of cultivating a culture of excellence and adaptability within the ICG during his keynote speech.
  • The conference featured active participation from senior officers across various ICG regions. It emphasised the need for a unified approach to complex operations, provided a platform for discussing best practices, and facilitated the alignment of strategies to address the evolving maritime security challenges.

Former Indian Cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad Passes Away

  • Former Indian cricketer and coach Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the age of 71. Gaekwad played for India for a period of 12 years, from 1975-1987, where the former opening batter represented the national side in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs. He also served as the men's team head coach in two stints (during which India ended as runners-up in 2000 Champions Trophy). In addition, he served as a national selector in the 1990s and the president of the Indian Cricketers' Association.

National Mountain Climbing Day

  • National Mountain Climbing Day, observed annually on August 1, is a day dedicated to honouring the spirit of adventure and the remarkable achievements of mountaineers.   • World Lung Cancer Day is observed annually on August 1.
  • The observance of World Lung Cancer Day began in 2012 when the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) jointly decided to dedicate August 1 to raising awareness about lung cancer. Since its inception, this day has played a crucial role in educating the public about the disease and promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
  • The theme for World Lung Cancer Day 2024 is 'Close the care gap: Everyone deserves access to cancer care'. This powerful message emphasises the importance of equitable access to lung cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographical location.

World Breastfeeding Week

  • World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and galvanise action on themes related to breastfeeding. It is celebrated from August 1 to 7 August every year.
  • WBW started in 1992, with annual themes including healthcare systems, women and work, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, community support, ecology, economy, science, education, and human rights.
  • Since 2016, WBW is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed WBW as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.
  • The 2024 World Breastfeeding Week, under the theme 'Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all', UNICEF and WHO are emphasising the need to improve breastfeeding support as a critical action for reducing health inequity and protecting the rights of mothers and babies to survive and thrive.

Goa Launches 'Goem Vinamulya Vij Yevjan' Scheme

  • In a push towards sustainable energy, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant launched the 'Goem Vinamulya Vij Yevjan' scheme, aligning it with the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The initiative is aimed at enhancing solar rooftop installations in Goa, enabling residential households to generate their own electricity and reduce reliance on traditional power sources.
  • The Goem Vinamulya Vij Yevjan has an initial investment of Rs. 35 crore. The Goa Energy Development Agency will cover the remaining cost for rooftop installations up to 5kW for consumers using 400 or fewer units annually.

IIT Madras & IDBI Bank Join to Launch Cybersecurity Lab

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and IDBI Bank launched a cybersecurity lab to develop and deploy security solutions in crucial sectors including in healthcare, fintech and aerospace. The 'IDBI – IITM Secure Systems Lab' (I2SSL) was inaugurated at the IIT Madras campus.
  • The lab, according to IIT Madras, will focus on creating market-ready IPs in cybersecurity, productisation and commercialisation of research work, especially for mobile technologies.
  • This lab seeks to focus on cybersecurity in systems deployed in industries such as banking, automotive, power and telecommunications, among others, and undertake experimental evaluation and assessment exercises, IIT Madras said adding that the researchers would also develop test cases for testing, carry out vulnerability research, and help devise hardening guidelines.

Education Minister Launches NATS 2.0 and Disburses Rs. 100 crore Stipends

  • Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, launched the National Apprenticeship and Training Scheme (NATS) 2.0 Portal in New Delhi. As part of this initiative, Rs. 100 crore in stipends was disbursed to young graduates and diploma holders through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). These apprentices are receiving on-the-job training across various sectors, including IT/ITes, manufacturing, and automobile industries.
  • The launch of the NATS 2.0 portal represents a significant step toward democratising apprenticeship opportunities, bridging skill gaps, and fulfilling the aspirations of youth, ultimately preparing them for future careers. The portal aims to facilitate a large number of beneficiaries to register and apply for apprenticeships while allowing establishments and industries to manage vacancies and contracts efficiently.
  • This initiative will support many young graduates and diploma holders in developing employability skills, accompanied by a guaranteed monthly stipend.

NIIT IFBI Launches 'ACE Banker Program' in Collaboration with HDFC Bank

  • NIIT Institute of Finance, Banking and Insurance (NIIT IFBI), a subsidiary of NIIT, announced the launch of the ACE Banker Program in collaboration with HDFC Bank. A key component of NIIT's Talent Pipeline as a Service (TPaaS) initiative, this programme aims to recruit and train customer service professionals for HDFC Bank.
  • The ACE Banker Program is designed to address the evolving needs of the banking sector by equipping participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel in customer service roles at HDFC Bank.

  • Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani, presented the first copy of his new book 'Call of the Gir' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a small family get-together at the PM's residence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated the book Call of the Gir written by Rajya Sabha Member Parimal Nathwani.
  • Nathwani dedicated the book to PM Modi 'for being the visionary behind Project Lion and Lion@2047: Vision for Amrit Kaal'. The book also contains a message from the PM. During informal conversation with Nathwani, Modi enquired about the status of tourism in Gir and emphasised the need to increase the infrastructure so as to attract foreign tourists in Gir. He also said that forestation around the periphery of Gir sanctuary was the need of the hour.
