Ukrainian President, Polish Prime Minister Sign Bilateral Security Agreement

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a bilateral security agreement in Warsaw.
  • The agreement was signed a day before the start of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) summit, in Washington.
  • The agreement spells out Poland's continued defence support for Ukraine, especially air defence. Poland also pledged to support energy security for Ukraine, and participate in reconstruction.

BSF Organises "Grow with the Trees" Plantation Drive in Srinagar

  • Border Security Forces (BSF), in association with SBI Bank, organised a "Grow with the Trees" plantation drive at BSF Headquarters in Srinagar.
  • With the aim of creating a green environment and promoting the importance of tree plantations, the BSF officials and Jawans, along with the officials from SBI Bank and the school children at the Kendria Vidyalay at the BSF Headquarters, took part in the drive.
  • The initiative did not only create a more sustainable environment but also fostered a sense of community and teamwork among the participants.

Uttar Pradesh Unveils 'Mitra Van' Initiative along Borders

  • The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, unveiled a major environmental initiative called 'Mitra Van' (Friendship Forest) as part of the Vriksharopan Jan Abhiyan-2024. This ambitious project aims to enhance greenery along the borders of Uttar Pradesh, including its international border with Nepal.
  • The 'Mitra Van' initiative will be implemented in 35 districts bordering neighbouring states.

Govt. Makes ISI Mark Mandatory for Stainless Steel and Aluminium Utensils

  • The government made it mandatory for stainless steel and aluminium kitchen utensils to conform to national quality standards, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) said, in a move aimed at enhancing consumer safety and product quality. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under Ministry of Commerce and Industry had issued a Quality Control Order, making the ISI mark compulsory for these kitchen utensils.
  • Indian Standards Institution (ISI) mark is developed by BIS, assuring of product quality and safety.
  • According to BIS, the order prohibits the manufacture, import, sale, distribution, storage, or exhibition for sale of any stainless steel or aluminium utensils that do not bear the BIS standard mark.

RBI Approves Govind Singh's Re-appointment as MD & CEO of Utkarsh SFB

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the re-appointment of Govind Singh as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Utkarsh Small Finance Bank (Utkarsh SFB) effective from September 21, 2024.
  • The present term of Govind Singh is up to September 20, 2024. The board of the SFB had approved his re-appointment in the meeting held on January 27, 2024.
  • Utkarsh Small Finance Bank incorporated on April 30, 2016, is engaged in providing banking and financial services with a focus on providing microfinance to the underserved and unserved sections of the country.
  • The Bank is headquartered at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

NASA's Mars Simulation Mission

  • Four volunteers finished an immersive Mars simulation at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston as part of a new NASA project. It was a big step toward getting ready for human missions to Mars.
  • The Mars exercise took place in the Mars Dune Alpha habitat, which was built using cutting-edge 3D printing technology. This habitat, which is part of NASA's CHAPEA project (Cumulative Habitat for Extraterrestrial and Planetary Analysis and Exploration), feels like life on Mars, with problems like limited resources and slow contact. It's 1,700 square feet and has different useful areas like a lounge, kitchen, and medical exam room that are meant to make it feel like a real home or workplace.
  • The people who took part—Dr. Kelly Haston, Dr. Anca Selariu, Ross Brockewell, and Dr. Nathan Jones—did things that scientists would normally do on Mars.

Indian Squash Players Triumph at Asian Squash Doubles Championship 2024

  • Indian squash players secured two titles at the Asian Squash Doubles Championship 2024 held at the Arena Emas in Johor, Malaysia. The Indian team clinched victories in both the men's doubles and mixed doubles categories.
  • Mixed Title:
  • Abhay Singh and Joshna Chinappa defeated Hong Kong China's Tong Tsz Wing and Ming Hong Tang 2-1 (11-8, 10-11, 11-5).
  • Men's Doubles Title:
  • Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar defeated Ong Sai Hung and Syafiq Kamal of Malaysia in straight sets.
  • Asian Team Squash Championship was organised by the Asian Squash Federation with host country's Squash Federations. 33 teams from 7 countries participated in the championship.

Badminton: India's Tasnim Mir & Tharun Mannepalli Clinch Singles Titles At Saint-Denis Reunion Open 2024

  • In Badminton, Indian shuttlers bagged the men's and women's singles titles at the Saint-Denis Reunion Open 2024, in Saint-Denis, the capital of the French overseas département of Réunion in the Western Indian Ocean. In Men's singles, India's Tharun Mannepalli defeated Yudai Okimoto of Japan in straight sets, 21-15, 21-15, and won his second title of the year. Earlier, he won the Kazakhstan International Challenge. While in women's singles, World No. 75, India's Tasnim Mir clinched the title, defeating compatriot Rakshitha Sree, also in straight games 21-15, 21-19. in the final. However, in the men's doubles final, the Indian duo of Prakash Raj and Gouse Shaik lost to Julien Maio and William Villeger of France, 9-21, 14-21, to settle for a runner-up finish.

Haj Committee Now under Minority Affairs Ministry

  • In further strengthening the role of Kiren Rijiju-led Ministry of Minority Affairs, the government notified the latter as a nodal ministry instead of Ministry of External Affairs, for the Haj Committee.
  • Earlier, the work related to management of Haj pilgrimage, including administration of the Haj Committee Act, 2002, and rules made was handled by the MEA.

Union Cabinet Approves India's Signing of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved India to sign the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement. This landmark decision marks a significant step towards the conservation and sustainable utilisation of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Often referred to as the 'High Seas', areas beyond national jurisdiction are the global common oceans open to all for internationally lawful purposes such as navigation, over flight, laying submarine cables and pipelines, etc. The Ministry of Earth Sciences will spearhead the country's implementation of the BBNJ Agreement.

The 12th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee Meeting between India & UAE Held in Abu Dhabi

  • The 12th meeting of the India-UAE Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) concluded in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant step in bolstering defence relations between the two nations.
  • Led by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad, the Indian delegation met with their UAE counterparts, headed by Brigadier General Staff Jamal Ebrahim Mohamed Almazrooqi. The talks covered a wide range of topics aimed at enhancing bilateral defence and security cooperation.
  • The meeting focused on various aspects of collaboration, including training cooperation, joint military exercises, defence industrial partnerships, and research and development initiatives. Both sides also discussed the exchange of subject matter experts to benefit from each other's knowledge and experience. Regional security concerns, particularly maritime security, were addressed during the talks.
  • The India-UAE JDCC was established in 2006. Since then, 11 rounds have been held. The 12th meeting provided an opportunity to further augment India's defence and security relations with the UAE, strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

PM Modi Receives Russia's Highest Civilian Honour for Outstanding Service

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was ceremoniously presented with the Order of St Andrew the Apostle the First-Called, which was bestowed on him in the year 2019 at St Catherine's Hall of the Moscow Kremlin. The order was presented to the Prime Minister of India for his distinguished contribution to the development of a privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India and friendly ties between the two countries.
  • The Order of St Andrew the Apostle the First-Called is Russia's highest civilian honour, This prestigious award, established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, is only granted for the most exceptional civilian or military service to Russia.
  • The order is named after Saint Andrew, who is revered as the first apostle of Jesus and is considered the patron saint of Russia. Its rich history and selective bestowal make it a symbol of the highest recognition in Russian society and international relations.

Maharashtra Announces Free Higher Education for EWS, SEBC, and OBC Girls

  • The Maharashtra government announced that higher education for girls belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) will be made free.
  • This initiative, aimed at promoting women's education, was decided during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Additionally, tuition and exam fees for orphaned students of both genders will be waived, as per a government resolution (GR).
  • Starting from the 2024-25 academic year, the scheme is expected to cost Rs. 906 crore. The GR specifies that female students applying to recognised vocational courses through the Centralised Admission Process in government, aided private, semi-aided private, and non-aided colleges, as well as polytechnics, autonomous government universities, and open universities, will benefit from this initiative.
  • The courses covered include those in higher and technical education, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, animal husbandry, pisciculture, and dairy development.
