LIC Launches Agency Transformation Initiative 'Jeevan Samarth'

  • LIC launched the 'Jeevan Samarth', an initiative aimed at transforming the agency ecosystem. To achieve this, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has partnered with a global consulting firm, which will undertake this agency transformation project by reviewing its existing agency framework on an end-to-end basis.
  • It will also entail revamping the agency operations at the branch, division and zonal level directed towards establishing global best practices in the wake of the fast-changing industry and regulatory landscape of the insurance sector.

SBI Announces Initiatives to Mitigate Risks in Agriculture Loan Portfolio

  • The country's largest lender SBI announced 11 new initiatives — including enhancement of its digital banking features and opening of 35 new Agricultural Centralised Processing Cells — to mitigate risks in its agricultural loan portfolio.
  • On the occasion of the 69th Foundation Day, State Bank of India announced these initiatives to widen the bank's accessibility to address the banking needs of its potential customers.
  • SBI has enhanced its digital payment experience, with the introduction of two exciting features like tap-and-pay on the BHIM SBI PAY app and end-to-end digital loans against mutual funds on the YONO app.
  • The bank also announced an initiative, which is a fully digital end-to-end journey for SBI Surya Ghar Loan, it said, adding that the users can opt for credit to install solar rooftops under the central government's PM Surya Ghar Scheme, offering loans for up to 10 KW capacity.
  • The entire process will be managed on SBI's digital platform from applicant registration on the MNRE/REC portal to loan disbursement.

Two Gaganyaan Astronauts to Go to ISS Aboard the Axiom-4 Mission

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation selected two of its four trained Gaganyaan astronauts to go to the International Space Station (ISS) in collaboration with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) later this year (2024).
  • The mission will take place 'no earlier than October 2024', according to the information available on NASA website.
  • The astronauts will have to go to the United States ahead of the mission to train on the specifics of the ISS.
  • The Axiom-4 mission, which will take the Indian astronauts to the ISS, is the fourth private astronaut mission of NASA and a private US company Axiom Space. The mission is expected to dock with the ISS for fourteen days.

Veteran Actor Smriti Biswas Dies

  • Veteran actress Smriti Biswas died at the age of 100. The actress was best known for her work in Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi films.
  • Biswas made her acting debut with the 1930 Bengali film Sandhya and appeared last in the 1960 movie Model Girl.
  • She worked in the films of Guru Dutt, V Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, BR Chopra, and Raj Kapoor. She also acted with Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, Uttam Kumar, Balraj Sahni, and other notable artists in various films. Biswas retired from acting after marrying film director S. D. Narang in 1960.

International Day of Cooperatives

  • The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Cooperatives is observed on the first Saturday of July each year.

World Zoonoses Day

  • World Zoonosis Day is celebrated on 6th July every year. World Zoonosis Day is observed annually on July 6 to commemorate the first vaccinations against zoonotic diseases such as influenza, Ebola and West Nile virus. On July 6, 1885, French biologist Louis Pasteur administered the rabies vaccine to a small boy who had been bitten by a rabid dog. This vaccine saved the boy from infection. So every year this date is celebrated as World Zoonosis Day.

  • Six Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, including four posthumously, were decorated with military gallantry medals by President Droupadi Murmu during a defence investiture ceremony.
  • The family members of Inspector Dilip Kumar Das, Head Constable Raj Kumar Yadav and Constables Bablu Rabha and Shambhu Roy received Kirti Chakras (posthumous) from Ms. Murmu. They were recognised for displaying gallant action during an anti-Naxal operation in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on April 3, 2021.
  • Assistant Commandant Bibhor Kumar Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for displaying "exceptional" bravery and continuing to lead his troops despite losing his left leg to an improvised explosive device (IED) blast triggered by the Naxals in the Chakrabandha forest of the Aurangabad district in Bihar on February 25, 2022.
  • Constable Gamit Mukesh Kumar was also awarded the Shaurya Chakra for killing a terrorist in hand-to-hand combat and subsequent exchange of gunfire during a counter-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar on December 19, 2021.
