Nepal Nominates 8 New Ambassadors, Including For India
A little over two weeks after recalling the incumbents, Nepal nominated ambassadors for eight countries, including India.
According to the Cabinet sources, former Chief Secretary and Nepal's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Lokdarshan Regmi, was nominated as the new Nepalese ambassador to India.
Earlier on June 6, the Nepal government had recalled ambassadors from 11 countries, including those serving in India and the US and appointed under the Nepali Congress' quota, three months after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' terminated his alliance with the party and joined hands with former prime minister K. P. Sharma Oli.
The development came three months after the coalition was formed with the support of CPN-UML.
The government named former Commerce and Industry Secretary Chandra Ghimire as Nepal's new ambassador to the United States replacing the incumbent ambassador, Sridhar Khatri while Bijan Pant was named Nepal's new ambassador to the United Kingdom. All the ambassador nominees need to undergo parliamentary hearings before the president appoints them to their respective positions.
World's First Asian King Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre in Maharajganj, UP
Uttar Pradesh established the world's first conservation and breeding centre for Asian king vultures in Maharajganj district.
The facility aims to improve the population of Asian king vultures, which has been listed as critically endangered in the International Union for Conservation of Nature's red list since 2007.
As the named Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre, 24x7 monitoring of the vultures is being done.
Asian king vultures (also called red-headed vulture) are critically endangered due to a loss of their habitats and the excessive use of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in domestic animals, which becomes poisonous for vultures.
FM Nirmala Sitharaman Chair 53rd GST Council Meeting
The 53rd GST Council met under the Chairpersonship of Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, Chief Ministers of Goa and Meghalaya, Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, Finance Ministers of States & UTs (with legislature), and senior officers of the Ministry of Finance & States/ UTs.
The GST Council made several recommendations concerning changes in GST tax rates, trade facilitation measures, and compliance streamlining in GST.
Manoj Jain Appointed as Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Electronics Limited
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) appointed Manoj Jain as the new Chairman and Managing Director of the company.
Previously, he served as Director (R&D) from September 26, 2022, and took on additional roles, including Director (Bangalore Complex) from August 1, 2023, and Director (HR) from November 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. Additionally, before his elevation as Director (R&D), he was the General Manager of the Electronic Warfare and Avionics SBU at BEL's Bangalore Complex, which he took over in June 2021.

Government Appoints Atul Kumar Chaudhary as Secretary of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
The government appointed Atul Kumar Chaudhary, as the new Secretary, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the position which was lying vacant after superannuation of V. Raghunandan on May 31, 2024.
Chaudhary is a graduate from IIT-Rookkee and did his Master Diploma in Public Policy & Administration from IIPA Delhi. He has worked in various capacities in Personnel, HR, Administration, Licencing, Vigilance wing of BSNL and Department of Telecommunications (DoT). He was posted as a DDG at the DoT earlier. Chaudhary is an Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officer of 1989 batch and currently working as Deputy Director General (DDG) in Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). He is on deputation on foreign service terms, initially for a period of two years.

The satellite to study phenomena including gamma-ray bursts was lifted into orbit by a Chinese carrier rocket launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the south-western province of Sichuan.
The launch of the Space Variable Objects Monitor will play an important role in astronomical discoveries.
It is the first astronomy satellite developed by China and France, although they developed the China-France Oceanography Satellite, launched in 2018.
India Clinches Gold in Compound Team Event at Antalya Archery World Cup 2024
In archery, India's Jyoti Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur, and Aditi Swami clinched gold in the compound team event at the Antalya Archery World Cup 2024 in Turkey. The women's trio defeated Estonia 232–229 in the summit clash. With this victory, the Indian team completed a clean sweep this season, bagging all three World Cup Stage gold medals in the compound team event. Earlier, the Indian women's compound archery team, ranked world No. 1, defeated Italy at the World Cup 2024 Stage 1 in Shanghai. While in Stage 2, India beat the Republic of Korea in Yecheon in the final.
Table Tennis: Sreeja Akula Wins Singles and Doubles WTT Titles in Lagos
Sreeja Akula created history at the WTT Contender in Lagos, Nigeria by becoming the first Indian to clinch a singles title at a Contender level. Impressively, she also won the women's doubles title, becoming the first Indian to win two titles at the same event at this level of World Table Tennis events.
It was also the first time that India won a men's doubles title after the Surat duo of Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar beat local favourites Azeez Solanke and Olajide Omotayo 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-8).
In the women's doubles final, Sreeja combined with her Paris Olympics teammate Archana Kamath and defeated compatriots Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 12-10).
In the women's singles final Dreeja beat her Chinese opponent Ding Yijie, with a 4-1 win (10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6).

Three-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen survived a close scare from McLaren's Lando Norris and secured the top podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix to extend his championship lead.
The race was special for Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton who returned to the podium for the first time this season, and the first time since the Mexican Grand Prix last year (2023).
Russia Approves Draft Logistics Agreement with India
In a development aimed at bolstering military cooperation, the Russian government approved a draft logistics agreement with India. The draft agreement is a key step in increasing operational engagement between the armed forces of the two countries.
A logistics pact, such as the one proposed, facilitates mutual logistical support between countries during various military operations, including peacekeeping missions, humanitarian assistance, and joint military exercises. The support usually involves critical services like refuelling, maintenance, and supply of provisions, and increases interoperability.
This draft logistics pact is a continuation of the longstanding military relationship between Russia and India. In 2021, the two countries signed a comprehensive agreement on military-technical cooperation extending until 2030.
Ayyanna Patrudu Unanimously Elected as Speaker of A.P. Legislative Assembly
Narsipatnam MLA Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in the absence of any other contestant for the coveted post.
His candidature was proposed by Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan on behalf of the Jana Sena Party (JSP) and IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh and Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar on behalf of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), respectively.
Pakistan Delegation in India to Discuss Indus Water Treaty
A Pakistani delegation came to India in connection with the 1960 Indus Water Treaty and visited Kishtwar to see the Dam sites.
The Indus Waters Treaty was signed between then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and former Pakistan President Ayub Khan in 1960 with the World Bank as a signatory to the pact.
The treaty warrants the two sides to meet once a year, alternately in India and Pakistan. However, the 2022 year's meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi was cancelled in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The last meeting was held in March 2023.
It sets out a mechanism for cooperation and information exchange between the two countries regarding their use of the rivers, known as the Permanent Indus Commission which includes a commissioner from each of the two countries. It also sets out a process for resolving so-called "questions", "differences" and "disputes" that may arise between the parties.
India and Pakistan have engaged in a long outstanding water dispute over two hydroelectric projects.
Pakistan has objected to the building of the Kishanganga (330 megawatts) and Ratle (850 megawatts) hydroelectric plants by India, saying that it violates the provisions of the treaty. India insists on its right to build these projects and holds that their design is fully in compliance with the guidelines of the treaty.
Indian Army Signs MoU for Next Generation Wireless Technologies
Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), Indian Army and Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), an autonomous Research and Development laboratory under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance collaboration in 'Next Generation Wireless Technologies for Indian Army'.
The MoU was signed by Commandant MCTE and Colonel Commandant Corps of Signals Lt Gen K. H. Gawas, and Director General SAMEER, Dr P. H. Rao. This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening the Indian Army's technological capabilities which is aligned towards declared vision for 2024 as 'Year of Technological Absorption for Indian Army' by Chief of Army Staff.
Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank Gets National Award for APY Implementation
Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB), a regional rural bank sponsored by Canara Bank, was honoured with a national award by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) for significant enrolment under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY).
Shreekant M. Bhandiwad, Chairman of KVGB, received the award from Vivek Joshi, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Government of India, and Deepak Mohanty, Chairman of PFRDA, in New Delhi.
APY provides a safety net for workers in the informal sector, ensuring a pre-defined pension after 60 years.
Pradeep Singh Kharola Assigned the Additional Charge of NTA DG
The Director General of the National Testing Agency, Subodh Kumar Singh, was removed from the post, amid controversy over irregularities in exams. Subodh Kumar Singh's services were put on a 'compulsory wait' in Department of Personnel and Training. India Trade Promotion Organisation Chairman and MD Pradeep Singh Kharola was assigned additional charge of NTA DG till appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders.
Pradeep Singh Kharola is currently the Chairman and Managing Director of India Trade Promotion and was appointed as the Director General of National Testing Agency as an additional charge. Kharola is a 1985 batch IAS officer.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is an autonomous agency under the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education of India. It was established in November 2017 to conduct entrance examination admissions and recruitment. Vishnu Sculpture Found during Excavation in Maharashtra
An intricate and detailed 'Sheshshayi Vishnu' sculpture has been found during excavation work carried out by the ASI in Sindkhed Raja town in Maharashtra's Buldhana district.
It was found at a depth of 2.25 metres when a team of experts, during the conservation work of Lakhuji Jadhavrao's Chhatri, spotted some stone alignments and then reached a temple base on further digging.
The detailed and meticulously carved panel showing Dashavatara, Samudramanthana and Lord Vishnu reclining is the peculiarity of this sculpture.
Seth Releases the English Translation of "Hanuman Chalisa"
Eminent author Vikram Seth released the English translation of the sacred Hindu hymn "Hanuman Chalisa" — his first new work in over a decade.
Featuring title calligraphy by Seth himself, the book's bilingual edition has the original verses in Devanagari and Roman scripts alongside the English translations.
The "Hanuman Chalisa", written by 16th-century poet and saint Tulsidas, is one of the most popular Hindu devotional hymns dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It comprises 40 verses.
