Jaishankar Unveils Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Sri Lanka

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and commissioned the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre built with a USD 6 million grant from India during his first bilateral visit overseas after being re-appointed in the Cabinet.
  • The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said that Jaishankar also joined President Wickremesinghe in virtually handing over 48 houses, 24 each in Colombo and Trincomalee, built under the Model Village Housing Project and 106 houses in three up-country estates, built under Phase III of the Indian Housing Project, with funding from India.
  • Wickremesinghe and Jaishankar jointly unveiled the virtual plaque to mark the formal commissioning of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Sri Lanka under a USD 6 million grant from India. This includes a center at Navy Headquarters in Colombo, a sub-centre in Hambantota and unmanned installations at Galle, Arugambay, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kallarawa, Point Pedro and Mollikulam.

Mark Rutte to Succeed Stoltenberg as NATO Secretary General amid Escalating Global Tensions

  • Mark Rutte, the outgoing Prime Minister of the Netherlands, will succeed Jens Stoltenberg as the next secretary general of NATO, as agreed upon by all 32 nations of the alliance.
  • Klaus Iohannis, the President of Romania, withdrew his candidacy for the NATO secretary general post, reaffirming Romania's support for Rutte after receiving endorsements from Slovakia and Hungary.
  • Rutte's leadership came when the world is marred with conflicts and major countries are holding their elections. He will assume the position on October 2.

Putin Inks Deals with Vietnam in Bid to Shore up Ties in Asia

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a series of deals with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam, during a state visit that came as Moscow is seeking to bolster ties in Asia to offset growing international isolation over its military actions in Ukraine.
  • The two signed agreements to further cooperation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health. They also agreed to work on a roadmap for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam.

RBI Grants Payment Aggregator License to SabPaisa

  • SabPaisa (SRS Live Technologies Private Limited), a payment solutions provider announced that it received final approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to function as a Payment Aggregator (PA) under the Payments and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
  • The license allows SabPaisa to offer comprehensive payment aggregation services to merchants across the country. Since its establishment in 2016, SabPaisa has been offering innovative payment gateway solutions and related products such as Payouts and Subscriptions.

UK Surpasses China to Become India's 4th Largest Export Market

  • The United Kingdom (UK) overtook China and became India's fourth-largest export market in May 2024, commerce department data showed. The UK was India's sixth-largest export destination in May last year (2023). While exports to the UK grew by a third to $1.37 billion in May, the shipments to China saw 3 per cent growth at $1.33 billion last month.

Pat Cummins Becomes Second Australian to Claim a T20 World Cup Hattrick

  • Australia's Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins created history during his side's Super 8 clash versus Bangladesh by becoming only the second Aussie, after Brett Lee, to claim a T20 World Cup hattrick. Cummins achieved the feat during the first ball of the last over after dismissing Towhid Hridoy. In his previous over, he had removed the likes of Mahmudullah and Mehedi Hasan on the last two deliveries. Riding on his 3 for 29, Australia restricted Bangladesh for 140/8 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on June 20. Overall, he became the fourth Australian with a hattrick in the format.

Justin Sammons New Head Coach of Zimbabwe's Men's Cricket Team

  • Zimbabwe Cricket appointed South African Justin Sammons as its new men's head coach.
  • Sammons was a former batting coach with his home country's national team, the Proteas.
  • Dave Houghton resigned as Zimbabwe's head coach last year (2023) after the country failed to qualify for the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in the US and West Indies.
  • Sammons will lead Zimbabwe for the first time in a five-match T20 series against India in Zimbabwe.
  • Dion Ebrahim, a former Zimbabwe batter, is Sammons' assistant coach. Ebrahim represented Zimbabwe in 29 tests and 82 ODIs between 2001 and 2005, and has been a part of the coaching staff with the New Zealand senior men's team.

BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab Made Pro-tem Speaker of Lok Sabha

  • Days before the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, President Droupadi Murmu appointed seven-term MP from Odisha Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker of Lok Sabha, which triggered a political row as the Congress said that it was against convention.
  • Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the President appointed Mahtab, as Speaker pro-tem under Article 95(1) of the Constitution to perform the duties of Speaker till election of the Speaker. The Union Minister also said that the President also appointed Suresh Kodikunnil, Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu, Radha Mohan Singh, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Sudip Bandyopadhyay to assist Mahtab in administering the oath to newly elected Members of 18th Lok Sabha till the election of the Speaker.

  • Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) India appointed Girish Tanti, Vice-Chairman of Suzlon Group, as the Chairman. The position plays a key role in driving GWEC India's work with national and state government's that assist government and industry's efforts for building the right momentum and establishing policy frameworks that will ensure India delivers on its enormous wind energy and supply chain potential, both onshore and offshore.

Senior BJP Leader Surama Padhy Elected Unopposed Speaker of Odisha Assembly

  • Senior BJP leader Surama Padhy was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly.
  • Padhy, a two-time MLA elected from the Ranpur assembly segment in Nayagarh district was elected unopposed as there was no other candidate in the fray.
  • Pro-tem Speaker R. P. Swain announced her election and handed over the charge to her in the special session of the Assembly.
  • Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, deputy chief ministers – KV Singh Deo, Pravati Parida, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik and other members of the House greeted the new Speaker.
  • Padhy is the second woman to become Speaker of Odisha Assembly after Pramila Mallick of BJD.

Lt Gen N. S. Raja Subramani Next Vice Chief of Army Staff

  • Lt Gen N. S. Raja Subramani was named the next Vice Chief of Army Staff with the government clearing his appointment to the post. The officer, who is presently helming the Army's Central Command, will succeed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi.
  • Lt Gen Dwivedi, currently serving as the Vice Chief, will be the next Chief of the Army Staff when incumbent Gen Manoj Pande retires on June 30.
  • Lt Gen Subramani was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in 1985. He has a distinguished and illustrious military career spanning more than 37 years.
  • An alumnus of National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy, the officer also attended the Joint Services Command Staff College, Bracknell (the UK) and National Defence College, New Delhi.

World Hydrography Day

  • Every year on June 21, World Hydrography Day is celebrated globally, a special occasion dedicated to raising awareness about the significance of hydrography and the invaluable contributions made by hydrographers worldwide.
  • The establishment of World Hydrography Day can be traced back to 2005 when the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) recognized the need for a dedicated day to highlight the importance of hydrography and the work of hydrographers. The date of June 21 holds significance as it marks the founding anniversary of the IHO in 1921. By celebrating World Hydrography Day on this date, the IHO aimed to commemorate its establishment while also promoting international cooperation in hydrography.
  • The theme for World Hydrography Day 2024 is 'Hydrographic Information - Enhancing Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability in Marine Activities'.

International Yoga Day

  • Every year, International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21. The day is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of people through yoga. It is an occasion to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga.
  • The United Nations established the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, to raise awareness about the many benefits of yoga and to promote its as a way for a healthy lifestyle.
  • The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly.
  • The theme for International Yoga Day 2024 'Yoga for Self and Society', emphasises yoga's role in fostering individual well-being and societal harmony.

World Music Day

  • Also known as 'Fête de la Musique', World Music Day is celebrated annually on June 21 to promote the universal language of music.
  • The concept of World Music Day originated in France in 1981, when Jack Lang, the French Ministry of Culture, along with music composer Maurice Fleuret, and a radio producer and music journalist, proposed the idea of dedicating a day to music. The first World Music Day or Fête de la Musique took place in Paris in 1982, with over 1,000 musicians performing throughout the city.

Khalasi Wins the Cannes Lions Bronze

  • Khalasi, last year's (2023) Coke Studio hit by Gujarati folk singers Aditya Gadhvi and Achint Thakkar, won a bronze at the 71st Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity for diversity and inclusion in the music category. Creative agency VML picked up the award for Coke's 'Sing to Remember' Campaign. It was part of Coke Studio's attempt at "using the power of music to awaken forgotten languages". In this case it was Gujarati, a language that's not forgotten in India but one that's not in focus in the mainstream music space.
  • Written by lyricist Saumya Joshi, the track took social media by storm last year (2023), becoming a favourite in the Navratri season and winning appreciation from even PM Modi. The Gujarati pop track, which tells the story of a sailor, sounds folksy though it isn't traditional folk.

Cabinet Approves Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme for Implementation of Offshore Wind Energy Projects

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme for offshore wind energy projects at a total outlay of Rs. 7453 crore, including an outlay of Rs. 6853 crore for installation and commissioning of 1 GW of offshore wind energy projects (500 MW each off the coast of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu), and grant of Rs. 600 crore for upgradation of two ports to meet logistics requirements for offshore wind energy projects.
  • The VGF scheme is a major step towards implementation of the National Offshore Wind Energy Policy notified in 2015 with an aim to exploit the vast offshore wind energy potential that exists within the exclusive economic zone of India. The VGF support from the Government will reduce the cost of power from offshore wind projects and make them viable for purchase by DISCOMs. While the projects will be established by private developers selected though a transparent bidding process, the power excavation infrastructure, including the offshore substations, will be constructed by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL). Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, as the nodal ministry, will coordinate with various Ministries/Departments to ensure successful implementation of the scheme.

ADB Approves $170 Million Loan to Strengthen Health System in India

  • Multi-lateral development lender Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a USD 170 million (over Rs. 1,418 crore) policy-based loan to improve India's health system preparedness and capacity to respond to future pandemics. The Strengthened and Measurable Actions for Resilient and Transformative Health Systems will support the government's National Health Policy 2017, which aims to provide quality health care services to all.
  • This policy-based loan will help fill the gaps in policy, legislative, and institutional governance and structures and contribute to India's goal of providing universal access to quality and affordable healthcare services to strengthen pandemic preparedness and response, it said.

Dammalapati Srinivas New Advocate General for Andhra Pradesh

  • Senior Advocate Dammalapati Srinivas was appointed Advocate General for the State of Andhra Pradesh.
  • He succeeded S. Sriram, who resigned earlier this month (June 2024).
  • Srinivas did his law from VDS Law College in Vijayawada and registered as a member of the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh.
  • He worked as a junior with N. V. Ramana, who went on to serve as Chief Justice of India, before working under Senior Advocate S. R. Ashok. He previously served as Advocate General from 2014 to 2019, during the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government.
