Flagging Need for Russia to be in, India Opts Out of Ukraine Declaration
With Russia not attending the Swiss summit on peace in Ukraine held in Switzerland and calling it a 'waste of time', India did not sign the joint communique by saying that only those options acceptable to both parties can lead to abiding peace.
Representing India at the two-day summit, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Pavan Kapoor said that India had joined the summit to explore the way forward to a negotiated settlement of a very 'complex and pressing issue'.
According to the communique, signed by as many as 80 countries, the "territorial integrity" of Ukraine should be the basis for any peace agreement to end Russia's war.

MEA and SBI Sign MoU to Enhance Digital Payments for Migrant Workers via eMigrate Portal
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the State Bank of India (SBI) formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate SBI's payment gateway, SBIePay, with the eMigrate portal. This collaboration aims to bolster digital payment services for Indian migrant workers, recruiting agents, and users of the portal.
The integration seeks to expand the scope of safe and legal migration for Indian workers by enhancing digital payment options on the eMigrate portal. Launched in 2014, this portal facilitates transparent emigration processes, connecting foreign employers, registered agents, and insurance providers, thereby ensuring seamless migration under regulatory frameworks.
RBI Imposes 1.45 crore Fine on Central Bank of India, 96.4 lakh Fine on Bangladesh's Sonali Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a fine of Rs. 1.45 crore on the Central Bank of India and Rs. 96.4 lakh on Sonali Bank PLC, Bangladesh for non-compliance issues including loans and advances and Know Your Customer (KYC) norms.
The Central Bank of India was fined Rs. 1.45 crore for sanctioning a working capital demand loan to a corporation against amounts receivable from the government by way of subsidies.
The RBI stated that a penalty of Rs. 96.4 lakh was imposed on Sonali Bank PLC for non-compliance with certain norms, including the KYC Directions, 2016.
Sonali Bank PLC's Indian wing is part of the commercial Bank of Bangladesh.

Punjab Police in association with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Village Defence Committees (VDCs) is carrying out a one-week drive called 'Mission Nischay' against drugs in Fazilka district from June 15 to 21, 2024. They are reaching out to residents of as many as 42 villages along the India-Pakistan border to gather actionable intelligence about the demand and supply of drugs.

India's Nuclear Stockpile Crosses Pakistan for First Time in 25 Years: SIPRI
For the first time in 25 years, the Indian nuclear weapons stockpiled surpassed that of Pakistan, with a leading global tracker SIPRI assessing that India now has 172 warheads, against 170 estimated to be with Pakistan.
India is focusing more on longer-range weapons capable of reaching targets throughout China, while Pakistan remains the primary focus of India's nuclear deterrent.
Among Asian nuclear powers, India, Pakistan, and North Korea are pursuing the capability to deploy multiple warheads on ballistic missiles, the report added. This is something that China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US already possess.

"The Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi in its meeting held under the Chairmanship of its president Madhav Kaushik approved selection of 23 writers who were selected on the basis of recommendations made by the Jury comprising three members each in the concerned language in accordance with the rules and procedure laid down for the purpose.

IIT Kanpur & NSI Kanpur Sign MoU to Establish a Centre of excellence for Biofuels
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and National Sugar Institute, Kanpur (NSI Kanpur) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence for Biofuels at NSI Kanpur. The signing of the MoU took place in the presence of Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Dept of Food & Public Distribution, Govt of India; Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur; and Seema Paroha, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.
Under this MoU, IIT Kanpur & NSI Kanpur will engage in joint projects to conduct cutting-edge research and develop and adopt state-of-the-art technology to enhance biofuel production in the country with improved efficiency and sustainability. Biofuels are expected to play a key role in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change as well. The focus area of this collaborative research work will be the study on enhancing the production of Ethanol, Methanol, Bio-CNG, Aviation Fuel, and Green Hydrogen, etc. from biomass, a renewable source of energy.
New UGC Framework Transforms PG Studies with Flexible Multidisciplinary Options
The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India unveiled a revolutionary Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes, designed in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
This new framework stands out for its focus on multidisciplinary and holistic education, offering students flexible entry and exit options. UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar urged all higher education institutions to swiftly adopt this framework, which promises to empower students by letting them choose their courses and switch disciplines, in sync with the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF) and National Credit Framework (NCrF). The framework also accommodates the creditisation of work experience and allows students to pursue multiple degrees simultaneously or through online platforms.
One of the major highlights of the new postgraduate curriculum framework is its increased flexibility and mobility for students.
Goa Introducing Uniforms in Govt Colleges
The Goa government decided to introduce uniforms for students in government colleges and government-aided colleges in the state from the academic year 2024-25, saying the move will 'foster a sense of belonging" and "bridge gaps in socio-economic disparities'.
The Directorate of Higher Education said that the specifications of uniforms shall be decided by the respective colleges, adding that the expenditure towards uniforms of the students is not covered under the pattern of assistance.
Goa Set to Bring New Tourism Bill that Will Curb Touts, Keep Tourists Safe
A tourism safety force with powers to arrest and impose fines for 'touting', a 'sustainability' fee for tourism enterprises and incentives for sustainable tourism —are among some of the changes proposed in a draft tourism bill that the state government plans to introduce in the monsoon session of the state legislative assembly next month (July 2024).
Called 'The Goa Tourism Promotion, Management and Regulation Bill, 2024', the stated aim of the proposed law, drafted by the state's department of tourism, is to consolidate and amend the laws applicable to tourism and to "protect, preserve and retain the natural and cultural heritage of the state to ensure that it remains a destination of choice for tourists".
The proposed draft Bill seeks to repeal two existing legislations that govern state tourism — The Goa, Daman and Diu Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982 and The Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001.
