The 50th G7 summit was held from June 13 to 15, 2024 at Borgo Egnazia in the city of Fasano in Apulia, Italy.
The G7 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The summit was chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
A lot of important things were talked about at the 2024 G7 meeting in Italy. These include calming down the world economy, tackling climate change, improving health systems around the world after COVID-19, and handling political tensions, especially between China and Russia.
Artificial Islands to be Formed at Kavinadu Kanmoi Near Pudukottai
Work of forming artificial islands at Kavinadu Kanmoi, one of the biggest irrigation tanks in Pudukottai district in Tamil Nadu, has been taken up jointly by the Pudukottai district administration and Kadamadai Area Integrated Farmers Association (KAIFA).
As a first step towards formation of artificial islands, removal of seemai karuvelam (prosopis juliflora), an invasive species and weed, in the sprawling tank got under way with the work being inaugurated by Law Minister S. Regupathy and Environment Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan.
The silt would be removed before the formation of 10 artificial islands in the irrigation tank. The project was being executed with support from various stakeholders and local farmers.
Tata Group in Talks to Acquire a Majority Stake in Vivo's India Unit
Tata Group is in talks to acquire a majority stake in the Indian unit of Chinese smartphone maker Vivo. The negotiations have reached an "advanced" stage, with discussions now centred around determining the valuation.
Earlier, reports emerged that Vivo sold one of its manufacturing units located in Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida to Bhagwati Products, the parent company of Micromax.
India Reclaims Fourth-biggest Global Equity Market Tag from Hong Kong
The domestic equity markets once again overtook Hong Kong to reclaim the fourth-largest global market tag. Following the sharp rebound in the market from election result day lows, India's market capitalisation has soared 10 per cent to $5.2 trillion (BSE-listed companies). By comparison, Hong Kong's mcap is $5.17 trillion, down 5.4 per cent from this year's high of $5.47 trillion.
Chang'e-7 Mission: Egypt, Bahrain Join China to Build Hyperspectral Camera
Egypt and Bahrain joined China as international partners to develop and deliver scientific instruments for the Chang'e-7 mission. The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA), Bahrain's National Space Science Agency, and the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics, and Physics signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop a hyperspectral camera as part of the goal of developing and delivering scientific instruments for the Chang'e-7 mission.
The Chinese lunar mission aimed at searching for water ice at the moon's South Pole in 2026.
Ariarne Titmus Sets World Record in Women's 200m Freestyle
Ariarne Titmus set a world record in the women's 200-meter freestyle at Australia's Olympic swimming trials.
Titmus finished in 1 minute, 52.23 seconds in the final, taking almost two-thirds of a second off Mollie O'Callaghan's world mark of 1:52.85 set at last year's (2023) world championships.
Titmus, the Olympic champion in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle events, now holds the world records in both events.
Joshimath Renamed as Jyotirmath, Kosiyakutoli is Now Kainchi Dham
The Centre approved the Uttarakhand government's proposal to rename Joshimath tehsil in Chamoli district as Jyotirmath, and Kosiyakutoli tehsil in Nainital district as Pargana Shri Kainchi Dham.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had announced the renaming last year (2023). It was a long-standing demand of local residents, who had raised the issue with the CM, citing Joshimath's historical and spiritual significance.
Indian Army Receives First Batch of Indigenous Suicide Drones 'Nagastra-1'
The Indian Army received the first batch of man-portable suicide drones named Nagastra-1. The drones are capable of accurately striking enemy training camps, launch pads and infiltrators, hence minimising risk to soldiers.
The high-tech drones are designed and developed completely in India by Economic Explosives Limited (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Industries, Nagpur.
These drones will enhance the capability of the Indian Army to execute shallow strikes across the border when necessary. Drones like Nagastra-1 with in-built warheads are known as kamikaze or exploding drones.

WHO Recognises 3rd Indian Institute for Traditional Medicine Research
The World Health Organisation (WHO) designated National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH) in Hyderabad, under the Ministry of Ayush, as a WHO Collaborating Centre (CC) for traditional medicine research.
NIIMH, Hyderabad is a unit under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) which will now work as a WHO centre for 'Fundamental and Literary Research in Traditional Medicine'.
This recognition has been granted for a period of four years.
CCRAS-NIIMH, Hyderabad, joined the ranks as the third WHO Collaborating Centre in the domain of traditional medicine, followed by the Institute for Teaching & Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar, and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), New Delhi.
