The South African parliament re-elected the African National Congress's President Cyril Ramaphosa as President during the first sitting of the National Assembly of the 7th Parliament.
South Africa's African National Congress party has a broad agreement with the main opposition and other parties to form a coalition government and end a political deadlock after the ANC lost its 30-year majority in an election two weeks ago.
Ramaphosa was sworn in as the President of South Africa for the first time in February 2018.
World Bank Partners with Chennai for Zero Waste Goal
The World Bank will lend support to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to achieve sustainable waste management in the city.
At a meeting, the World Bank held discussions on solid waste management with officials of the State government and the GCC to stop waste dumping in Kodungaiyur by 2026-2027. In a bid to achieve sustainable waste management, the GCC intends to take initiatives to minimise the amount of solid waste that is disposed of on landfills or through incineration.
The World Bank intends to improve solid waste management in the city and various parts of the State over a period of 20 years. It will also conduct a study of the status of solid waste management in the city.
Centre Approves Rs. 50 Lakh Grants Each for 7 Start-ups in Technical Textiles to Boost Innovation and Sustainability
In a move to boost innovation in textiles, the Centre approved grants of Rs. 50 lakh each for seven start-ups in the technical textiles sector under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM).
This initiative aims to promote innovation and sustainability while fostering transformative developments in the industry.
The ministry has set a target to support 150 start-ups to promote innovations in technical textiles. These seven are in addition to one that was approved earlier.
Mumbai, Delhi Luxury Real Estate among Top 5 Globally: Knight Frank
Mumbai and Delhi emerged as top performers in the global luxury real estate market, according to Knight Frank's report, 'Prime Global Cities Index January-March 2024'. Both cities recorded significant increases in house prices, positioning them among the top five global cities for prime residential price growth.
Mumbai saw a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 11.5% in prime residential prices during the January-March 2024 quarter, placing it third globally, up from sixth in the same period in 2023.
The National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi experienced a 10.5% YoY rise in house prices, moving up to fifth place from seventeenth in the previous year (2023).
Manila led the index with a 26.2% increase in prices, followed by Tokyo, which saw a 12.5% rise. Tokyo's significant growth is attributed to favourable mortgage terms and increased foreign investment.

National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) launched a Mobile App 'NCRB Sankalan of Criminal Laws' to serve as a comprehensive guide providing complete information about the new criminal laws at one place. The New criminal laws will come into force from the 1st of next month (July 2024).
This App is a compilation of new criminal laws namely Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. It provides an Index linking all Chapters and Sections of the new laws. This App is useful for the General Public, Court Officers, Advocates, Law Students as well as for Police Officers in enhancing their knowledge about the New Criminal Laws. Sankalan app will be available for download on Google Play Store, Apple Store and its desktop version may be downloaded from official websites of MHA and NCRB.

Gujarat Issues New Rules for Class 11 Students Seeking Admission in Science Streams
The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) issued rules for Class 11 students opting for Science streams – group A (non medical) and group AB (both biology and maths).
As per the rules issued by GSHSEB, the students should have cleared basic maths subject in their Class 10 board examination with not less than 33 per cent marks, excluding any grace marks, for admission to Class 11.
Further, the board has directed schools to conduct a separate test of 30 marks based on standard maths subject to assess the ability and aptitude of students. The test will have 15 multiple-choice questions and 15 subjective questions and students will have to score 33 per cent marks to be eligible for admission in Class 11 A or AB groups.

Madhya Pradesh CM Inaugurates PM Shri Tourism Air Service from Bhopal
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav launched an intra-state air service to promote tourism from Raja Bhoj International Airport in the state capital Bhopal. It is called 'PM Shri Paryatan Vayu Seva' and the first flight was flagged off from the capital Bhopal to Jabalpur. The service operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) with two aircraft will connect eight cities across the State- Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Khajuraho, Ujjain, Rewa, and Singrauli.
Madhya Pradesh Tourism in partnership with M/s Jet Serve Aviation Private Limited under the PPP mode brought the 'PM Shri Tourism Air Service' to promote tourism in the state. It will connect eight cities within the state.
