  • Portugal plans to adapt its golden visa scheme to allow wealthy foreigners seeking residency rights to invest in affordable housing for locals or accommodation for migrants.
  • Antonio Leitao Amaro said the scheme - called a "solidarity visa" - would complement an existing programme, which since 2012 has offered non-EU nationals who invest in Portugal the right to live in the country.

Malawi Vice-President, 9 Others Die in Plane Crash

  • Malawi's Vice President and nine others were killed in a plane crash, the country's President said.
  • The wreckage of the military plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima was located in a mountainous area in the north of the country after a search that lasted more than a day.
  • There were no survivors of the crash, Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera said.
  • The plane carrying 51-year-old Vice President Saulos Chilima and former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri went missing while making the 45-minute flight from the southern African nation's capital, Lilongwe, to the city of Mzuzu.

PhonePe Partners with PickMe to Offer UPI Payments for Indians in Sri Lanka

  • The Indian digital payment company PhonePe announced a partnership with Sri Lankan ride-hailing platform PickMe. This collaboration allows Indian travellers in Sri Lanka to use PhonePe's UPI payment option to pay for PickMe rides, enabling cashless transactions and enhancing travel convenience.
  • This partnership follows the launch of PhonePe in Sri Lanka, supported by Indian High Commissioner H.E. IIT Madras, NASA Study Multidrug-resistant Pathogens on ISS

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) researchers are studying multi-drug resistant pathogens on the International Space Station (ISS), which could have key applications on Earth as well for the health of astronauts.
  • The researchers conducted a comprehensive study to understand the genomic, functional, and metabolic enhancements observed in multidrug-resistant pathogens with a particular focus on Enterobacter bugandensis, a prevalent nosocomial (hospital acquired infection) pathogen found on surfaces within the ISS.
  • Astronauts operating in altered immune conditions with limited access to traditional medical facilities face unique health challenges during space missions. Understanding the microbial landscape aboard the ISS is paramount for assessing the impact of these microorganisms on astronaut well-being.
  • The current study emphasises the critical need to investigate the pathogenic potential of microorganisms in space environments to safeguard astronaut health and mitigate the risks associated with opportunistic pathogens.

  • India's dream of reaching into the FIFA World Cup 2026 came to a halt after the Blue Tigers went down to Qatar by 2-1 in their last match of the second-round qualifiers in Doha.
  • The Blue Tigers have missed out on processing into the third round despite being in the best position to create history against Qatar. A controversial equaliser from Qatar came in the final 15 minutes of the regulation time when India were 1-0 up and dreaming.
  • The AFC Asian Cup champions found another goal and buried India's hopes of processing in the next round of the Qualifiers.

Kanimozhi Replaces T. R. Baalu as DMK Parliamentary Party Leader

  • DMK MP Kanimozhi, who was elected from the Thoothukudi Lok Sabha constituency, has been appointed as the party's parliamentary leader.
  • She replaced the Sriperumbudur MP T. R. Baalu, who will now head the DMK in the Lok Sabha.
  • Dayanidhi Maran, representing the Chennai Central constituency, will be the party's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha.
  • Former Union Minister A. Raja from the Nilgiris constituency will be the Whip in the Lok Sabha while Tiruchi N Siva was appointed as the DMK leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Mohan Charan Majhi Sworn in as BJP's First CM in Odisha

  • BJP MLA from Keonjhar Mohan Charan Majhi, who belongs to the tribal Santhal community, took oath as Odisha's Chief Minister. The party picked two Deputy CMs, K. V. Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, who became the first woman Deputy CM of the state.
  • Majhi secured victory in Keonjhar by 11,577 votes, defeating the BJD's Mina Majhi.
  • The BJP dethroned the Biju Janata Dal in Odisha after the 24-year-old reign of Naveen Patnaik.

Adani Defence & Aerospace, UAE's EDGE Sign Defence Cooperation Agreement

  • Adani Defence and Aerospace signed a cooperation agreement with EDGE Group, a global technology and defence organisation based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • The agreement will create a global platform that utilises the defence and aerospace strengths of both companies by combining product portfolios.
  • This includes evaluating cooperation across EDGE's and Adani's core product domains, including missiles and weapons covering airborne, surface, infantry, ammunition, and air defence products, platforms and systems covering unmanned aerial systems (UAS), loitering munitions, counter-drone systems, unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), as well as electronic warfare (EW) and cyber technologies.
  • The agreement will explore the establishment of research and development (R&D) facilities in India and the UAE. Under the partnership, development, production, and maintenance facilities for defence and aerospace solutions will be set up to serve not only the domestic markets of both countries but also Southeast Asian and wider global markets.

  • Sarod maestro Pandit Rajeev Taranath, passed away at the age of 92.
  • A distinguished exponent of Senia Maihar Gharana, Pandit Taranath was honoured nationally by the Government of India with a Padma Shri in 2019 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2000. In Karnataka, he has been bestowed with the Rajyothsava award in 1996, Chowdaiah Memorial award in 1998, Sangeet Vidwan award in 2018 and Nadoja award in 2019.

World Day Against Child Labour

  • Every year on June 12, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its associated partners celebrate World Day Against Child Labour. The day is dedicated to highlight the issue of child labour and encourage governments, employers, labour organizations and society to put an end to child labour for the benefit of world.
  • The World Day Against Child Labour was first established in 2002 by the International Labour Organization (ILO) with an unwavering commitment to eliminate the issue of global issue of child labour.

Assam Approves Stipend Scheme for Girl Students

  • In its crackdown against child marriage in the state, the Assam government approved a scheme to provide monetary benefits to girl students every month.
  • The scheme named Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina (MMNM) is expected to cover around one million girl students and cost the exchequer Rs. 300 crore in the first year and around Rs. 1,500 crore over a five-year period.
  • Girl students who have passed Class 10 and have enrolled in Class 11 will get Rs. 1,000 per month (excluding two months of summer vacation) for two years till they complete their Class 12 board exams. The amount will be transferred to their bank accounts on the 11th of every month, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • Further, the girl students who have completed Class 12 boards and enrolled in degree courses will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 1,250 for the next three to four years till they complete their graduation, and those who have enrolled in post-graduation and Bachelor of Education courses will get Rs. 2,500 per month till their courses get over.
  • Sarma had in April this year (2024) promised that the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state will take the responsibility of educating girl students up to the postgraduate level.

India Ranks 129th on Global Gender Gap index, Iceland on Top: World Economic Forum

  • India slipped two places on the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Gender Gap index to 129th place, while Iceland retained its top position in the rankings published on June 12.
  • Within South Asia, India was ranked fifth after Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan, while Pakistan was ranked last. Globally, Sudan was ranked last on the index of 146 countries, while Pakistan slipped three places to 145th.

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras reinvented the BTech curriculum for India to help its students meet the demands of modern and technological developments. This is by far, the most student-friendly engineering curriculum in India, in terms of curricular demand as well as flexibility. The newly revamped programs also allow for early exits from the programs, for those that desire freedom.
  • These changes have been implemented following the rigorous recommendations of an Institute Curriculum Task Force, orienting it towards employment, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Oxford University to Return Stolen 500-year-old Bronze Idol to India

  • The UK's prestigious Oxford University agreed to return a 500-year-old bronze idol of a saint believed to be stolen from a temple in Tamil Nadu to India. In March 2024, the Council of the Oxford University supported a claim from the Indian High Commission for the return of a 16th-century bronze sculpture of Saint Tirumankai Alvar from the Ashmolean Museum.
  • The 60 cm-tall statue of Saint Tirumankai Alvar was acquired by the Ashmolean Museum at the Oxford University from Sotheby's auction house in 1967 from the collection of a collector named Dr. J. R. Belmont (1886-1981).

  • Bill Gates announced a new memoir, offering insights into his early life and the founding of Microsoft. While the memoir promises to cover significant moments in Gates' life, it may not detail all the intricate happenings within Microsoft.

  • The Central government cleared the appointment of two additional judges of the Gauhati High Court as permanent judges.
  • The two judges who were made permanent are: Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Justice Mitali Thakuria.
  • In May 2024, the Supreme Court collegium had recommended that the two additional judges be made permanent.
