UN Adds Israel to List of Militaries Committing Violations against Children

  • The UN added the Israeli military to a list of offenders failing to protect children last year (2023), Israel's ambassador to the UN said.
  • A spokesman for the Palestinian President said that the decision was a step closer to holding Israel accountable for what he called its crimes.
  • Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the UN had added itself to the "blacklist of history" and that the Israeli military was the "most moral army in the world".

  • Muthoot Microfin announced a strategic co-lending partnership with the State Bank of India to extend its financial services to women in the economically weaker segment in rural and semi-urban regions across India.
  • Muthoot Microfin and SBI will co-lend to members of joint liability groups who are engaged in agricultural and allied activities as well as other income-generating enterprises.
  • The loan amounts will range from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 3 lakh.

Nvidia Surpasses Apple to Become Second Most Valuable Company

  • Chip manufacturer Nvidia crossed $3 trillion in market capitalisation, surpassing iPhone producer Apple Inc. in the process. With this, Nvidia now became the second most valuable publicly traded company in the US. Microsoft continues to remain the most valuable at $3.15 billion.
  • This isn't the first instance of the chipmaker being more valuable than Apple. The last time this happened though, was two decades earlier, in 2002, five years before the launch of the first iPhone. Back then, both companies were valued under $10 billion.

MeitY and UNESCO Host National Workshop on Safe, Trusted, Ethical AI

  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) South Asia Regional Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, organized the National Stakeholder Workshop on Safe, Trusted, and Ethical AI at the Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi. This event, following the approval of the IndiaAI Mission by the Government of India, marked a significant step towards enhancing India's AI ecosystem, with a substantial allocation exceeding Rs. 10,000 crore.
  • The workshop brought together senior officials from Central Line Ministries, State Governments, NITI Aayog, and industry partners such as NASSCOM. Discussions focused on the ethical implications of AI, societal impacts, and strategies for ethical AI implementation in India.

  • According to Siva Ganesan, Head, AI.Cloud Unit, TCS, this platform helps customers take advantage of GenAI to unlock the full potential of their data, drive greater business innovation and efficiency, and gain a competitive edge.

To Decide Fate of World Chess Championship Host, Pollution a Factor: FIDE CEO Sutovsky on Delhi's Bid

  • The air pollution that New Delhi experiences annually in the final months of the year could be one of the factors in deciding whether India's capital hosts the upcoming World Chess Championship this year (2024), FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky said. India's 18-year-old challenger Gukesh will take on reigning world champion Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship for a chance to become the youngest world champion ever in history.
  • Besides New Delhi, Chennai and Singapore are also in a three-city race to host the most prestigious event in chess. The world championship is scheduled to be held in November and December 2024 with the exact dates yet to be revealed.

Munich World Cup: Sift Wins Bronze in Tight Finish at WC

  • Indian shooter Sift Kaur Samra claimed the bronze medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event after narrowly missing the silver at the ISSF World Cup (rifle/pistol).
  • Sift shot a 452.9 and missed silver by an agonising 0.1 to China's Han Jiayu.
  • The world No. 1 Seonaid McIntosh of the Great Britain won gold with a score of 466.7.

A.J.T. Johnsingh, a Renowned Wildlife Field Biologist and Conservationist, Passes Away

  • Noted Indian wildlife biologist and leading conservationist Asir Jawahar Thomas Johnsingh, popularly known as A.J.T. Johnsingh among wildlife enthusiasts, passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 78.
  • Johnsingh's journey began in the early 1970s as a Zoology lecturer in Sivakasi. His frequent field trips to the forests ignited a passion that led him to pursue a Ph.D. in wildlife studies. It was his groundbreaking work on elephants in the early 1980s that proved instrumental in the Government of India's decision to formulate Project Elephant, a significant initiative aimed at protecting the majestic animals and their habitats.
  • He is a recipient of various awards including Padma Shri Award for his exemplary work.

Duolingo English Test to Include Additional Subscores for Enhanced Language Assessment

  • The Duolingo English Test (DET) will now include new Individual Subscores like Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening along with existing Integrated subscores for Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production. This change will be implemented from July 1.
  • These new Individual subscores will give a clearer picture to the universities about a better understanding of a student's language abilities for real-world academic setting alongside helping students to understand their core competencies, DET claims.
  • After completing the test, applicants receive a score report containing both their overall score and subscores. The overall score, ranging from 10 to 160 in 5-point increments, aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the international standard for language proficiency.

India Art Festival Makes its Debut in Hyderabad

  • The India Art Festival (IAF), a premier contemporary art fair held annually in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai since 2011, made its inaugural edition in Hyderabad. The event took place from June 7 to 9, 2024, at Kings Kohinoor (Crown) Convention, Hyderabad.
  • The Hyderabad edition featured 30 art galleries showcasing the works of 50 master artists, alongside 200 mid-career and emerging artists. Visitors saw a diverse array of 3,500 paintings and sculptures across various mediums, displayed in 100 booths.
  • Since its inception in 2011, the India Art Festival has successfully hosted 25 editions across New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. The festival's unique format, which includes both gallery exhibits, and independent artist showcases, has significantly contributed to its growth in scale, quality, and reach over the past decade and a half. This year's (2024) Hyderabad edition aimed to continue the art festival's mission of democratizing art viewing and buying, bringing a rich cultural experience to the Charminar City.
  • The IAF follows the Art Expo model, one of the oldest art fairs in New York.
