Iceland Elects Businesswoman Tomasdottir as President

  • Halla Tomasdottir, an entrepreneur, won Iceland's presidential election and will take over the mostly ceremonial role from incumbent Gudni Johannesson.
  • Tomasdottir received 34% of the votes cast in the election in the North Atlantic nation, and beat former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, who stepped down as Premier in April 2024 to run for President.
  • The President, who is elected for a four-year term, carries limited political powers but often acts as a uniting figure in the island nation of almost 400,000 people, which is a NATO member.
  • Tomasdottir, who will be the seventh President of Iceland since the foundation of the republic in 1944, also ran for president eight years ago when she came in second behind Johannesson. She will be sworn in on August 1.
  • Tomasdottir was the previous head of Iceland's Chamber of Commerce and in 2007 founded financial services company Audur Capital, aiming to incorporate social responsibility and women's perspectives into finance.
  • Iceland has been ranked the best country in the world for gender equality for the last 14 years, according to the World Economic Forum.

Seoul to Suspend Military Deal amid North Korea's Balloon Provocations

  • South Korea's government approved the suspension of a contentious military agreement with North Korea, a step that would allow it to take tougher responses to North Korean provocations.
  • The development came as animosities between the rival Koreas rose sharply after North Korea launched trash-carrying balloons across the border in reaction to previous South Korean civilian leafleting campaigns.
  • South Korea's Cabinet Council passed a proposal aimed at suspending the 2018 inter-Korean agreement on lowering down frontline military tensions. The proposal will formally take effect when it's signed by President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Stunning Blue Ant Discovered In Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot

  • Researchers from Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) and a documentation team from Felis Creations Bangalore discovered a distinct, stunning blue-coloured ant species in Siang Valley, a biodiversity hotspot of Arunachal Pradesh, under the banner 'Siang Expedition'.
  • Named Paraparatrechina neela, the species is "nothing like the common red, black, or brown ants," according to ATREE researchers. 'Neela' means blue in many Indian languages, which they said was a "fitting tribute" to the ant's unique colouration.
  • Paraparatrechina neela, the researchers described, is a small ant and less than two millimetres long, with a predominantly metallic blue body, except for the antennae, mandibles, and legs. The metallic blue is distinct from any other species in its rare genus, Paraparatrechina.

Nokia and Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya Collaborate on 5G/6G Research

  • Finnish telecom giant Nokia and Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore advancements in 5G and 6G communications, specifically targeting transportation and logistics sectors. The agreement, signed in the presence of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chancellor of GSV, aims to leverage Nokia's expertise in telecommunications to enhance various aspects of transportation and logistics.
  • Under the collaboration, Nokia and GSV will focus on several key areas:

India Creates World Record with 64.2 crore People Voting in Lok Sabha Poll

  • India created a world record with 64.2 crore voters, including 31.2 crore women, participating in the Lok Sabha Election 2024. Chief Election commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the number is 1.5 times of the voters of all G7 countries – US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada. In this (2024) Lok Sabha polls, 31.2 crore women voters cast their votes which is also the highest ever in the world. He also said, only 39 repolling were conducted in this election unlike 540 repolling in 2019 General Election. Kumar said, over 68 thousand monitoring teams and 1.5 crore polling and security personnel were involved in the electoral exercise. He also pointed out that Jammu and Kashmir recorded their highest turnout in four decades, with an overall turnout of 58.58 per cent and 51.05 per cent in the Valley.
  • India, the world's largest democracy, has concluded its seven-phase parliamentary election, and the results are now eagerly awaited. This colossal democratic exercise, which spanned over two and a half months, stands out as the world's largest and most complex election.

BJP Creates History Marking End of Naveen Era

  • In the Odisha assembly election 2024, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scripted history by securing a clear majority against the popular government of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), ending Naveen Patnaik's 24-year-long tenure. This is the first time that a BJP government will be formed in Odisha.
  • Odisha, with a total of 21 Lok Sabha constituencies and 147 Assembly constituencies, went to polls across four phases with the first phase held on May 13, and the following phases held on May 20, May 25, and June 1. Voting in Odisha concluded on June 1, along with the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha polls. The assembly polls in Odisha were conducted simultaneously along with the parliamentary elections.

Zupee Collaborates with Gurugram Cyber Police for Cyber Security Awareness

  • In a bid to bolster cyber security awareness, Zupee, India's largest skill-based Ludo platform, partnered with Gurugram Cyber Police for the 11th edition of the Cyber Security Summer Internship Program, titled 'Cyber Warriors'. The month-long internship aims to train selected candidates in cyber security under the guidance of experts, fostering responsible digital citizenship and tackling real-world cyber threats.
  • The Gurugram Police Cyber Security Summer Internship Program (GPCSSI 2024) is a flagship event of the Gurugram Police since 2013. The month-long internship started on June 3 and ends on July 3.

World Environment Day

  • World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on the 5th of June. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the WED in 1972. World Environment Day is one of the biggest international events for the environment. It is a platform that raises awareness about the environmental problems faced by our planet. The day also serves as a platform to promote environmental changes and sustainable practices. This year (2024), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted the 2024 Environment Day celebration during which land restoration, desertification and drought resilience were the key topics of discussion.
  • Since 1973, World Environment Day is observed annually on the 5th of June. The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 1972 to raise awareness and promote action for environmental protection.

School Education Department Signs MoU with National Book Trust to Create Institutional Framework for Rashtriya E-Pustakalaya

  • The Department of School Education signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Book Trust to create an institutional framework for the Digital Library Platform, Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya. Secretary of the Department of Higher Education K. Sanjay Murthy said that the Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya will be available round-the-clock, irrespective of the geographic location of the readers, making books more accessible to them. He also added that the problem of last mile presence of a library for many states will be solved with Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya.
  • The digital library aims to resolve the 'last mile' accessibility issue for many states by offering over 10,000 books in more than 100 languages within the next 2-3 years. Currently, over 1,000 books in 23 languages are available.

IIT Bombay, Delhi Maintain Top Spots in QS World University Ranking 2025; MIT Remains Best Varsity

  • In the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking released in June 2024, 61 per cent of Indian universities ranking improved, with IIT Bombay gaining the top spot in India. Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained the 'best institute in the world' position for the 13th time this year. 
  • This year (2024), the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) climbed from 149 in 2024 to 118 in the 2025 rankings, that is, a climb of 31 ranks.
  • IIT Bombay is followed by IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru with the two institutes ranked second and third in India, respectively. While the IIT Delhi climbed 47 ranks (from 197 last year to 150 this time), IISc jumped from 225 to 211 (14 ranks).
  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) has achieved the fourth spot as it went from 271 in the 2024 rankings to 222 this time. IIT KGP is followed by IIT Madras which climbed 58 ranks (285 to 227) this year (2024).

  • Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium became full tenant and member of Three Verulam Buildings (3VB) barristers' chambers.
  • Subramanium has been an Associate Member of 3VB since 2013. He was also called to the Bar of England and Wales as a Member of Gray's Inn in 2021.
  • Trained under former Attorney General (AG) Soli Sorabjee, he was designated a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 1993, one of the youngest in India's history to receive the designation. From 2005 to 2009, he served as Additional Solicitor General (ASG) of India.
  • Between 2009 and 2011, Subramanium served as Solicitor General (SG) of India. During that time, he was also Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI).
