Taiwan's Legislature Passes New Bill Reducing President's Authority

  • Taiwan lawmakers passed legislation that could curb the authority of President Lai Ching-te, as thousands of protesters gathered outside Parliament to oppose the changes.
  • The controversial measure became law following a day of raucous debates and scuffles between Lai's ruling Democratic Progressive Party and opposition groups.
  • The legislative changes backed by the Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party expand lawmakers' ability to summon the president, companies and even the general public for questioning. It also gives them access to confidential documents.

RBI Launches PRAVAAH, Retail Direct Mobile App, and FinTech Repository

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das launched three major initiatives – PRAVAAH portal, the retail direct mobile app and a fintech repository.
  • PRAVAAH (Platform for Regulatory Application, VAlidation and AutHorisation) is a secure and centralised web-based portal for any individual or entity to seek authorisation, license or regulatory approval on any reference made by it to the RBI.
  • The retail direct mobile app will provide retail investors a seamless and convenient access to the retail direct platform and provide ease of transacting in government securities (G-Secs).
  • The regulator said that the fintech repository will contain information on Indian fintech firms for a better understanding of the sector from a regulatory perspective and facilitate in designing appropriate policy approaches.

P&G Hygiene Appoints Mrinalini Srinivasan Chief Financial Officer

  • Vicks and Whisper maker- Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care Ltd named Mrinalini Srinivasan as the company's Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
  • Mrinalini is taking over the role, from June 29, from Prashant Bhatnagar, who will leave the company after about 28 years of service.
  • Srinivasan has an experience of 16 years in finance roles. She joined P&G in 2008 and has worked across Singapore, India, and Dubai.

  • Poonawalla Fincorp Limited, in partnership with IndusInd Bank, introduced the co-branded 'IndusInd Bank Poonawalla Fincorp eLITE RuPay Platinum Credit Card'. This new card, designed to enhance customer experience with rewards and benefits, is available without any joining or annual fees. Users can earn rewards for every Rs. 100 spent, including UPI transactions, and benefit from 2.5 times reward points on e-commerce transactions.

  • Ghana signed deals with a Reliance Jio subsidiary, Tech Mahindra, and other vendors to build 4G and 5G infrastructure as the African country aims to enhance its telecom capabilities.
  • Ghana's state-backed Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC) has partnered with Jio's arm Radisys, Tech Mahindra and Nokia to build the necessary infrastructure for delivering affordable 5G mobile broadband services.
  • Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ghana's Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, emphasized India's strategic relevance due to similar demographics and recent telecom advancements. Choosing Indian vendors over Chinese suppliers, Ghana seeks to benefit from India's expertise in the field.
  • Ghana explores the deployment of both 4G and 5G networks, along with discussions with Elon Musk's Starlink for satellite connectivity. This expansion strategy aligns with Ghana's goal of deepening telecom penetration.

Indian Arm Wrestlers Contingent Wins Seven Medals at Asian Championship 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

  • In Arm Wrestling, the Indian contingent clinched a total of seven medals including one gold and six bronze at the Asian Championship, 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Shrimant Jha, who participated in two categories, was the top performer for India. He won the gold medal in the left-hand para category, while he won the bronze medal in the right-hand para category.
  • In the Masters category, Laxman Singh Bhandari secured two bronze medals, while Sachin Goyal won the bronze medal in the competitive right-hand senior category. Meanwhile, in the Women's Right and Left-hand categories, Ibi Lollen from Arunachal Pradesh clinched two bronze medals.
  • The Indian contingent competed under the banner of the People's Armwrestling Federation of India (PAFI), led by President Preeti Jhangiani. PAFI is the sole Indian organisation in affiliation with the Asian Armwrestling Federation (AAF) and the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF).

In One Go, 11 ED Officers Made Joint Director

  • The Centre promoted 11 Enforcement Directorate-cadre officers to the rank of Joint Director in the federal anti-money laundering agency.
  • This is the first time that so many cadre officers were promoted in one go to the Joint Director level, an important position vis-a-vis investigations.
  • The Department of Revenue under the Union Finance Ministry issued an order for promoting 11 officers from the Joint Director rank.
  • A Joint Director position in the ED envisages supervising investigations related to money laundering and foreign exchange contravention.
  • The ED is tasked with investigating financial crimes under three laws — the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Foreign Exchange Management Act and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act.

Government Starts Granting Citizenship under CAA in West Bengal, Haryana, Uttarakhand

  • The Union government started granting citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in West Bengal, Haryana and Uttarakhand.
  • The CAA was enacted in December 2019 for granting Indian nationality to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
  • The applicants in West Bengal, Haryana and Uttarakhand were granted citizenship by the respective State Empowered Committee.
  • The first set of citizenship certificates after the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, granted by the Empowered Committee, Delhi, were handed over to the applicants in New Delhi by the Union Home Secretary on May 15.
  • Even though the CAA was enactment in 2019, the rules to grant citizenship under it were issued on March 11, 2024, after a delay of more than four years.

India Successfully Test-fires Rudra-II Air-to-Surface Missile from Su-30 Fighter Jet

  • India achieved a significant milestone in its defence capabilities as it successfully test-fired a RudraM-II air-to-surface missile from a Su-30 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) off the coast of Odisha. The defence ministry confirmed that the flight-testing of the missile met all trial objectives, marking a crucial advancement in India's indigenously-developed solid-propelled air-launched missile system.
  • The RudraM-II missile incorporates state-of-the-art indigenous technologies developed by various DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) laboratories.
  • Rudram is India's first anti-radiation missile (ARM), is an air-to-surface missile.
  • While RudraM-1 primarily aims at Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD), advanced versions like RudraM-2 and RudraM-3 are under development with ranges of 350 and 550 km, respectively.

Indian Mountaineer Sets Record by Accomplishing Double Dual Ascent of Mt Everest & Mt Lhotse

  • Indian mountaineer Satyadeep Gupta scripted history by becoming the first person to scale Mt Everest and Mt Lhotse twice in one season and the first Indian to traverse the two peaks in 11 hours and 15 minutes.
  • Gupta successfully summited the 8,516-metre-high Mt. Lhotse on May 27 at noon and then went on to conquer the 8,849-metre-high Mt. Everest at 12:45 am, midnight, according to Pioneer Adventure Expedition, which organized the expedition.
  • This feat marked the first Double Dual Ascent of the world's highest and the fourth highest peaks in one season, according to the adventure company.
  • Gupta was accompanied by climbing guides Pastemba Sherpa and Nima Ungdi Sherpa during his historic ascents. He had previously summited Mt. Everest on May 21 and Mt. Lhotse on May 22, showcasing his exceptional skills and determination.

Goa Statehood Day

  • Goa marks its Statehood Day every May 30, honouring its official separation from Daman and Diu as a state in 1987.
  • Though the smallest state in terms of area, it packs a punch in popularity. For over four and a half centuries, Goa was a Portuguese colony. In 1961, it was liberated by India and became a union territory alongside Daman and Diu. But Goa's journey wasn't over. Crackdown on Fraudulent SMS under Sanchar Saathi Initiative

  • In a major crackdown on SMS scammers, the government blacklisted 'principal entities' behind SMS headers that were used for sending over 10,000 fraudulent messages over the past three months, according to an official release.
  • The Department of Telecom (DoT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has taken decisive action to protect citizens from potential SMS fraud through the Sanchar Saathi initiative.
  • Over the past three months, DoT has intercepted more than 10,000 fraudulent messages originating from eight distinct entities.
  • Launched by Union Communication Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in May 2023, the Sanchar Saathi Initiative is designed to empower mobile subscribers, raise awareness about government initiatives, and bolster security measures.
