Spain Pledges 1 Billion in Military Aid to Ukraine, Signs Bilateral Defence Deal

  • Spain pledged to provide military aid to Ukraine worth 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion) in 2024 under a security deal signed between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid.
  • It will allow Ukraine to boost its capabilities including its essential air defence systems to protect its civilians, cities and infrastructure which are still suffering indiscriminate attacks as seen this weekend in Kharkiv.
  • Sanchez stated that Spain had already vowed to provide Ukraine with Patriot missiles, however, what Zelensky needed from Ukraine's allies was the systems to launch these missiles.

Saudi Arabia Names Faisal bin Saud Al-Mejfel as Ambassador to Syria

  • Saudi Arabia's appointment of Faisal bin Saud Al-Mejfel as its ambassador to Syria signifies a significant shift in bilateral relations, marking the first such appointment in over a decade. This move came amidst a period of thawing relations between the two nations following years of estrangement sparked by the Syrian civil war.
  • The rift between Saudi Arabia and Syria emerged in 2011 amid the Syrian civil war, with Saudi Arabia backing rebel groups opposed to the Assad regime. Diplomatic ties were severed in 2012, leading to the closure of Saudi Arabia's embassy in Damascus.
  • The process of reconciliation began in May 2023 when Syria was readmitted to the Arab League, setting the stage for renewed engagement between Saudi Arabia and Syria. Following Syria's readmission, Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Damascus, signaling a desire for normalized relations.

Cyclone Remal: Assam Braces for Heavy Rain, Several Districts on High Alert

  • Several districts of Assam were on high alert in the wake of forecast for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall under the impact of Cyclone Remal, which made landfall in neighbouring West Bengal and Bangladesh.
  • A red alert for extremely heavy rainfall was issued in Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts, and an orange alert for Dhubri, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Nalbari, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai and West Karbi Anglong in Assam.
  • NDRF teams were deployed in Cachar, Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh, while personnel of Fire and Emergency Services were also on standby.
  • The name 'Remal', meaning 'sand' in Arabic, was chosen by Oman according to the standard convention of naming tropical cyclones in the region.

Nykaa Appoints Santosh Desai as Independent Director on its Board

  • FSN E-Commerce Ventures (Nykaa) announced the appointment of Santosh Desai as an Independent Director on its board, effective July 15, 2024, for a period of three years, subject to the approval of shareholders.
  • Desai served as the CEO of Future Brands for nearly 17 years. He has also served as the president of McCann, one of India's premier advertising agencies.
  • He is at present serving on the boards of Think9 Consumer Technologies, Dainik Jagran Group, and Breakthrough. He is also a member of the governing councils of Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad and Praxis Business School, Kolkata. He has earlier served on the boards of ING Vysya Bank and Oxfam India.

GoAir Temporarily Loses Slots and Foreign Bilateral Rights amid Insolvency

  • Trouble continues to mount for GoAir as the beleaguered airline temporarily lost its slots and foreign bilateral rights to other carriers, including Air India and IndiGo.
  • In the aviation industry, airlines of a particular country require a bilateral air services agreement with another country to operate international flights.
  • This agreement determines the number of flights (or seats) allowed per week between the two countries.
  • However, securing these flying rights is not sufficient; airlines must also obtain slots at both departure and arrival terminals to commence operations.

TCS Secures Core Banking Transformation Deal with Kuwait's Burgan Bank

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) signed a deal to modernize the core banking technology of Burgan Bank, a leading commercial bank in Kuwait. Burgan Bank will deploy TCS BaNCS to consolidate multiple legacy applications into a contemporary universal banking solution, enhancing innovation and customer relationships.
  • Burgan Bank, one of the youngest commercial banks in Kuwait, operates a regional network of over 160 branches and 360 ATMs. The bank aims to leverage TCS BaNCS to digitally transform its technology landscape.

  • In the decisive phase of her Malaysia Masters final against Wang Zhiyi, P. V. Sindhu could score just 5 points while the Chinese racked up 18. That decider lasted 36 minutes and Sindhu played many long rallies in utter vain in that period.

Neeraj Chopra Pulls Out of the Ostrava Golden Spike Meet

  • Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra clarified that he is not injured but pulled out of the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in Czech Republic on May 28 as a precautionary measure after he felt something on his adductor muscles during a training session.
  • Chopra would not want to risk injury in an Olympic year and hence decided to skip the prestigious meet.

Centre Effects Secretary-level Reshuffle, Pradip Kumar Tripathi Named Lokpal Secretary

  • Senior bureaucrat Pradip Kumar Tripathi was appointed as the Lokpal Secretary as part of a secretary-level reshuffle effected by the Centre.
  • Tripathi is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service officer (IAS).
  • He was appointed as Secretary to the Lokpal till the date of his superannuation (June 30) and thereafter on contract basis for a period of two years beyond the date of his superannuation on usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed central government officers, said an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
  • Border Management Secretary Raj Kumar Goyal was appointed as Secretary, Department of Justice under the Ministry of Law & Justice.

Dissolution of Food and Nutrition Board

  • The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), set up in 1964, a technical branch of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) responsible for providing logistical support to community nutrition programs, was officially dissolved as part of the government's plan to rationalize various bodies.
  • In a gazette notification issued, the WCD Ministry announced the dissolution of the FNB, which operated a wide network of offices, including four regional offices and several quality control laboratories across major cities like Faridabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.

Govt. Extends Army Chief General Manoj Pande's Tenure by a Month

  • In an unusual move, the government extended by a month the tenure of Army chief General Manoj Pande who was to retire on May 31.
  • According to an official statement, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet approved the extension in service of Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC for a period of one month, beyond his normal age of superannuation (May 31, 2024), i.e. up to June 30, 2024, under 'Rule 16 A (4) of the Army Rules 1954'.
  • He was appointed as the COAS on April 30, 2022. He was commissioned in December 1982 in the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers). He held the appointment of Vice Chief of the Army Staff before taking over as the COAS.
  • The extension in tenure indicates that a decision on the selection of the next Army chief will be open for the next government.

DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat Gets One-year Extension

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet granted an extension of one year to Samir V. Kamat, who is the Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • With this approval, Samir Kamat will hold charge of DRDO till May 31, 2025.

Jyoti Ratre Becomes India's Oldest Woman to Conquer Mount Everest

  • Jyoti Ratre, an entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast from Madhya Pradesh, etched her name in history by becoming the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest. Ratre's triumphant ascent to the summit of the world's highest peak came six years after Sangeeta Bahl, at the age of 53, earned the title of 'India's oldest woman to climb Mount Everest' in May 2018.
  • For Ratre, this extraordinary feat was the culmination of unwavering determination and resilience. Her journey to the top of Mount Everest was not without its challenges, as she had previously attempted the summit in 2023 but was forced to turn back from an altitude of 8,160 meters due to harsh weather conditions. Undeterred by this setback, Ratre's resolve remained steadfast, and she embarked on her second attempt with renewed vigour.

AliExpress Recruits Beckham as Ambassador

  • AliExpress, an e-commerce site owned by Chinese giant Alibaba, signed former England soccer captain David Beckham as a brand ambassador as it plays catch-up with rival PDD Holdings' Temu in a battle to sell cheap made-in-China goods to the world.
  • Alibaba is now investing aggressively to boost global sales as domestic e-commerce growth wanes. Its international division, which includes AliExpress, is its fastest growing unit with revenues surging 45 per cent year on year over January to March.
