Lai Ching-Te of Taiwan's Ruling DPP Sworn in as New President

  • Lai Ching-te of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was sworn in as the self-governing island's new President. According to Taiwan's Foreign Ministry, more than 500 foreign guests from 51 delegations attended the inauguration ceremony and related activities, including the national leaders of eight countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
  • A trained physician Lai succeeds Tsai Ing-wen to lead the democracy amid increasing threats from China, which claims the self-governing island as its territory. Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949.
  • Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, was also officially sworn in. She was Taiwan's de facto ambassador to the US from 2020 to 2023 and formerly served as a DPP lawmaker for several terms.
  • Lai, who won election in January, took over from Tsai Ing-wen, having served as her vice president for the past four years.

Khamenei Loyalist Mohammad Mokhber Appointed Interim Iran President

  • Supreme Leader Khamenei, who holds ultimate power with a final say on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear programme, said that First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber, would take over as interim President.
  • The development came as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was confirmed dead in the helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border.

Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda Wins Vote of confidence in Parliament

  • Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' won a vote of confidence in Parliament, the fourth within 18 months of taking office, amidst sloganeering by the main Opposition Nepali Congress that abstained from the voting.
  • Prachanda a former guerrilla leader from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) -- the third largest party in the House of Representatives (HoR) -- received 157 votes in the 275-member HoR.
  • In total, 158 lawmakers took part in the voting. The main Opposition Nepali Congress boycotted the voting process and chanted slogans against Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, accused of misappropriation of cooperative funds, leading to the delay in the session. One HoR member remained neutral.

Manipur Government Initiatives Safeguard Endangered Polo Ponies

  • In an important joint effort, the Government of Manipur, along with several equestrian groups and state offices, has taken steps to keep the Manipuri Pony, also called the Meitei Sagol, from going extinct.
  • Several decisions were passed at the meeting to protect the breed. These included quickly gathering the ponies, naming temporary housing areas, and creating a task force. It was also planned for always-on consultation, a study of the grazing grounds, and registration through stud books. One important part was making a detailed budget for pony management, which emphasized that everyone needed to work together.
  • The Manipuri Pony is one of India's seven official horse breeds. It is special because of its historical and cultural value in Manipur. These ponies are an important part of Manipur's history and were once used by the local military. They were first bred for the traditional game of Sagol Kangjei, which later became polo.

  • Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani made it to the top 15 world's super-rich list of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. This marks a significant achievement, especially for Gautam Adani, who reclaimed his position after losing it in 2023. Notably, for the first time, all individuals in the top 15 have a net worth of $100 billion or more.
  • Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), is ranked 12th with a wealth of $110 billion. Gautam Adani, with a wealth of $100 billion, is ranked 14th.
  • Bernard Arnault, the founder and CEO of LVMH, continues to lead the world's richest list with a net worth of $222 billion.
  • Jeff Bezos: The founder of Amazon.com Inc. is the second richest person with a net worth of $208 billion.
  • Elon Musk: CEO of Tesla, ranks third with a net worth of $187 billion. Despite a significant drop of over $40 billion this year, Musk remains one of the wealthiest individuals globally.

  • Bank of Maharashtra emerged as a top performer among public sector banks, showcasing impressive growth in total business and deposit mobilization. With a 15.94% rise in total business and a 15.66% increase in deposits, it outshined competitors like State Bank of India. The bank's focus on low-cost CASA deposits, coupled with robust loan growth and exemplary asset quality, positions it as a resilient and efficient player in the banking sector.
  • Bank of Maharashtra also maintained its leading position in terms of deposit mobilization growth, achieving a notable 15.66% rise in the last fiscal year.

Yes Bank Launches Premium Services under 'Yes Grandeur' for Affluent, Elite Customers

  • YES Bank launched YES Grandeur, a banking program targeted at the emerging affluent section of the society. So, only banking customers with an average monthly balance (AMB) of Rs. 5 lakh or a net relationship value (NRV) of Rs. 20 lakh will be eligible for the program, with additional consideration to loan relationships.
  • YES Grandeur is aimed at enhancing and personalising the customer experience by offering unique banking, travel and lifestyle privileges. The banking benefits will include premium service, such as dedicated relationship managers, preferential rates on banking services, exemption across a host of charges, discounts on locker facilities, and a special 3-in-1 account with demat, trading and savings accounts.

Ed Dwight, America's first Black Astronaut Candidate, Becomes Oldest Person to Reach Space

  • Ed Dwight, America's first Black astronaut candidate, finally rocketed into space 60 years later, flying with Jeff Bezos' rocket company.
  • Dwight was an Air Force pilot when President John F. Kennedy championed him as a candidate for NASA's early astronaut corps. But he wasn't picked for the 1963 class.
  • Dwight, now 90, went through a few minutes of weightlessness with five other passengers aboard the Blue Origin capsule as it skimmed space on a roughly 10-minute flight. He called it "a life-changing experience."
  • The brief flight from West Texas made Dwight the new record-holder for oldest person in space.

Zverev Wins 6th Masters Title at Italian Open

  • Alexander Zverev warmed up for the French Open by winning his sixth Masters title when he beat first-time finalist Nicolas Jarry 6-4 7-5 in the Italian Open showpiece. It was a second title in Rome for Zverev, having won his first in 2017 when he was 20, and his first trophy since he broke his ankle in the French Open semi-finals in 2022.
  • The 27-year-old will also climb to fourth in the rankings as he slowly returns to his best ahead of Roland Garros. "Obviously winning my first ever (Masters title) here and winning my first after injury, so Rome is a very special place for me. It is a very, very special week," third seed Zverev said.

Deepthi Jeevanji Wins Gold with World Record Time in World Para

  • Deepthi Jeevanji won India's first gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships 2024 in Kobe, Japan when she won in the women's T20 400 m event. She clocked a world record of 55.07 seconds.
  • Earlier Deepthi qualified for the finals setting a new Asian record with a time of 56.18 seconds and secured a Paris 2024 Paralympics quota.
  • Deepthi smashed American Breanna Clark's earlier world record of 55.12 seconds set during last year's edition of the championships in Paris.

Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi Clinch Gold Medals at Elorda Cup in Kazakhstan

  • Reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi clinched gold medals as the Indian team concluded their Elorda Cup 2024 campaign with 12 medals in Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • Besides Nikhat and Minakshi's gold medals, Indian boxers won two silver and eight bronze medals to better their last edition's record of five medals.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Receives First Stamp Released Commemorating Completion of 200 Years of Indian Origin Tamils in Sri Lanka

  • Indian spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar received the first stamp released commemorating the completion of 200 years of Indian Origin Tamils in Sri Lanka. Governor of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka Senthil Thondaman presented the stamp to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Mr. Thondaman said that the stamp is a way to attain recognition for the community which has been neglected for decades. He thanked the Indian government as well as the Sri Lankan government for the assistance given to the IOT community.

Baramulla Create History with Record Voter Turnout in Phase 5 of Lok Sabha Polls

  • History was created in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency as it recorded a 59% voter turnout, the highest ever in the history of the constituency. Former terrorists, their families, and members of Jamaat-e-Islami cast their votes for peace and a better future.
  • Active terrorist Umar's brother, Rauf Ahmed, showed great courage and love for democracy by voting from Ussu village, once a stronghold of separatists. In the last five elections, no more than 2-3% voting has taken place in this area, but today a huge turnout was recorded.

Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet Ships in Manila to Participate in Maritime Partnership Exercise

  • Indian Navy ships INS Delhi, INS Shakti and INS Kiltan reached Manila, Philippines, to further strengthen the longstanding friendship and maritime cooperation between the two countries.
  • During the visit, personnel from both navies will engage in a wide range of professional interactions, including Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE), sports fixtures, cross-deck visits, cultural visits, and collaborative community outreach programmes.
  • During the visit, the ships will also participate in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with the Philippine Navy.

Narayanan Vaghul, the Banking Doyen, Passes Away

  • Narayanan Vaghul, renowned banker and former Chairman of ICICI Bank, died at the age of 88 in Chennai.
  • A Padma Bhushan awardee, Vaghul is considered as the 'Bhishma Pitamah' of banking in the country. The processes established by him went on to become strong and sustainable practices in the Indian financial ecosystem. He has been instrumental in mentoring several powerhouses of banking talent and actively groomed more women CEOs in banking.
  • He joined ICICI Limited as the Chairman and CEO in 1985. Under his leadership, ICICI transformed from a development bank to the second largest commercial bank of the country.

National Anti-Terrorism Day

  • Every year on May 21 India celebrates Anti-Terrorism Day to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Sriperumbridor, a village now known as Chennai, on 21 May 1991. National Anti-Terrorism Day was first established in the country by the V. P. The day also aims to promote peace and harmony in the country.

ISB, IIM-Bangalore Make to Top 50 in FT's Executive Education Custom Ranking 2024

  • The Indian School of Business (ISB) and Indian Institute of Management- Bangalore (IIM-B) made it to the Financial Times's Executive Education Custom Ranking 2024. This year (2024), ISB ranked 26 and IIM- Bangalore secured the 48 position in the education ranking.
  • Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires (INSEAD) secured the top position this year (2024) with a growth of 64 points. In 2023, the Institute had ranked at the second position. Under the overall satisfaction category, the business school scored 8.56. The Institute has its campuses in France and Singapore.
  • With a growth rate of 17 points, IESE Business School has been ranked in the second position.
  • The third spot is achieved by the International Institute for Management Development, followed by Duke Corporate Education, HEC Paris, SDA Bocconi School of Management, London Business School, ESMT Berlin, Essec Business School and Fundação Dom Cabral.
