Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia: Indian Entrepreneurs Shine among 300 Trailblazers

  • Forbes released its ninth edition of the '30 Under 30 Asia' list, celebrating 300 young entrepreneurs, leaders, and trailblazers under 30 who are driving innovation and transforming industries across the Asia-Pacific region. The list also featured India's Akshit Bansal and Raghav Arora, Co-founders of Statiq and Bhagya Shree Jain, Founder of the Disposal Company.
  • Bansal and Arora founded Sharify Services, under the brand Statiq, which offers a nationwide network of charging stations for electric vehicles.
  • Bhagya Shree Jain founded The Disposal Company (TDC) in 2020 to promote plastic neutrality as a sustainable concept.
  • Notably, this year's (2024) list represented a diverse lot of individuals from 21 countries and territories across the Asia-Pacific region, with India leading with 86 entries, followed by China and Japan with 32 each, Singapore with 27, Australia with 26, and Indonesia with 18.

Cannes 2024: Producer Guneet Monga to Head Initiative to Support Indian Women Filmmakers at Festival

  • Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor and Women In Film Los Angeles (WIF) launched a new initiative to support women filmmakers in India at Cannes.
  • At an exclusive Cannes Film Festival event hosted by the Paris Film Region and WIF (Women In Film, Los Angeles), the official launch of a new Women In Film chapter was announced. The initiative 'WIF: India', part of the global WIFTI (Women In Film & Television International) network, is committed to advancing gender equity in Indian screen industries. It will be led by Guneet.
  • Founded in 1973 as Women In Film, Los Angeles, WIF has been fighting for gender equity for more than 50 years. WIF works to dismantle gender bias in the screen industries by building the pipeline, sustaining careers, and advocating for change.

India and Britain Reaffirm Commitment to FTA at Annual Strategic Dialogue

  • India and the UK have reaffirmed their commitment to concluding a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA) during the annual UK-India Strategic Dialogue in London. This marks a significant step as the two nations have already conducted 13 rounds of talks, with the 14th round commencing in January 2024. The discussions also reviewed progress on the 2030 Roadmap, established in 2021 to enhance cooperation in various sectors.
  • Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and his UK counterpart Sir Philip Barton reflected on the "good progress" achieved since the last review. This includes collaboration on the world's first malaria vaccine, support for India's G20 Presidency, and enhanced opportunities for students and entrepreneurs under the Migration and Mobility Partnership.

Venezuela Becomes First Country to Lose All Glaciers

  • Venezuela is the first country in modern history to lose all of its glaciers after climate scientists declared its remaining glacier little more than an ice field.
  • Climatologist Maximiliano Herrera Venezuela's Humboldt Glacier has shrunk to an area of two hectares and has gone static, downgrading it to an ice field.
  • The Humboldt Glacier, also known as La Corona, was the last remaining one in Venezuela after the country lost at least five others in the past century due to the effects of climate change.

M&M Gears Up For a Rs. 26,000 Crore Investment in Automotive Business

  • In anticipation of increased demand in the automotive sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd unveiled an ambitious plan to invest Rs. 26,000 crore in its automotive business over the next three years. This significant investment will span from FY25 to FY27 and is aimed at developing new vehicles and enhancing production capacity.
  • A substantial portion of the investment, Rs. 12,000 crore, is allocated to Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited (MEAL), the company's electric vehicle unit.
  • The remaining investment will be distributed as follows:
  • SUV Business: Rs. 8,500 crore will be invested to bolster the company's SUV lineup.
  • Commercial Vehicles: Rs. 4,000 crore is allocated to enhance the commercial vehicle segment.
  • Farm Equipment: Rs. 5,000 crore will be directed towards the farm equipment business.

India Ranks First in Adoption of GenAI across Asia-Pacific: Deloitte India

  • India emerged on top among 13 countries in Asia Pacific in adoption and use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), according to a Deloitte report, released in May 2024, based on a survey of 11,900 individuals across the region.
  • As per the report, titled 'Generative AI in Asia Pacific', 93% of students and 83% of employees in the country are actively engaging with GenAI.

Cristiano Ronaldo Tops Forbes' List of Highest-paid Athletes

  • For the fourth time in his career, Cristiano Ronaldo topped the Forbes list of highest paid-athletes while Spanish golfer Jon Rahm moved to the second spot. Ronaldo's arch-rival Lionel Messi is at the third position in the list, whereas France superstar Kylian Mbappe dropped down to the sixth spot.
  • Ronaldo became the world's highest-paid athlete after his switch from Manchester United to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in late 2022.
  • Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James -- who is nearing retirement -- came at the fourth spot at $128.2 million. Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo ($111 million) followed James at the fifth spot whereas France football captain Mbappe is sixth ($110 million) on the list.

Shinku La Tunnel Work to Begin by Mid-September

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will begin work in mid-September on the Shinku La tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity from Manali to Leh via the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha axis. The tunnel, located at an altitude of 15,800 feet, is expected to be completed in four years and will become the world's highest tunnel, surpassing China's Mila tunnel at 15,590 feet.
  • Shinku La tunnel is a mountain pass in India, on the state boundary between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.

Their appointments underscore the government's commitment to bolstering the investigative capabilities of the premier investigative agency.
  • A. Y. V. Krishna, a distinguished 1995-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. His tenure as additional director extends up to August 6, 2028, as per the order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
  • The tenure of N. Venu Gopal, a seasoned IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, is effective until May 24, 2027.

  • Renowned Hindi writer and Padma Shri recipient Malti Joshi died. She was 90.
  • Popularly known as 'Malwa ki Meera', Joshi was awarded the Padma Shri by the then President Ramnath Kovind in 2018.
  • More than 60 books in Hindi and Marathi languages have been written by her.
  • Some of her most popular works include 'Madhayantar', 'Pataakshep', 'Parajay', 'Ek Ghar Sapno Ka', 'Woh Tera Ghar, Ye Mera Ghar', and her novel 'Aurat Ek Raat Hai'.

Former Tech Mahindra Vice Chairman Vineet Nayyar Passes Away

  • Vineet Nayyar, the former Vice Chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away at the age of 85.
  • Nayyar has led several organisations across industries creating high-performing teams and successful businesses. He had a rich and varied experience having worked with the government, international multilateral agencies and the corporate sector both public and private in a career that spans over 40 years
  • Nayyar started his career with the Indian Administrative Service. While in the government, he held series of senior positions, including that of a District Magistrate, Secretary Agriculture & Rural development for the Government of Haryana and Director, Department Of Economic Affairs, Government of India.
  • Nayyar worked with the World Bank for over 10 years in a series of senior assignments, including successively being the Chief for the Energy, Infrastructure and the Finance Divisions for East Asia and Pacific.

International Museum Day

  • International Museum Day is celebrated every year on May 18. The event focuses on a different theme each year, reflecting relevant topics or challenges encountered by museums globally.
  • The inaugural International Museum Day was organised in 1977 by ICOM, following the adoption of a resolution aimed at creating an annual event to unite the creative efforts of museums and raise global awareness about their activities. Since then, museums worldwide have been invited to participate in IMD each year, promoting their role through events and activities aligned with the annual theme. The tradition of adopting an annual theme began in 1992, with the introduction of an international poster by ICOM in 1997, which was embraced by 28 countries that year.
  • The theme for 2024, 'Museums for Education and Research', emphasises the crucial role of cultural institutions in delivering a comprehensive educational experience.

World AIDS Vaccine Day

  • World AIDS Vaccine Day, also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, is observed annually on May 18. The day is dedicated to recognising and promoting the need for AIDS vaccines. It also serves as an opportunity to show gratitude and honour the people such as doctors, scientists, and community members engaged in developing vaccines.
  • The day commemorates the speech made by then-President Bill Clinton at Morgan State University on May 18, 1997, where he emphasised the importance of creating a vaccine to stop the spread of the epidemic.
  • Since then, the day has been observed globally (starting in the year 1998) to spread awareness about the disease and the need for its vaccine.

Justice A. S. Bopanna Bids Farewell to Supreme Court

  • Justice A. S. Bopanna bid farewell to the Supreme Court, his last working day at the apex court.
  • The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) organised a farewell ceremony for Justice Bopanna which was attended by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud, other judges of Supreme Court and members of Bar.
  • Justice Bopanna was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. He enrolled with the Bar Council of Karnataka in 1984 and practised in the Karnataka High Court and civil and labour courts for 22 years.
  • He was appointed as an additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on January 6, 2006 and became a permanent judge on March 1, 2007.
  • He was appointed as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on October 29, 2018.
