India Highlights Forest Conservation, Sustainable Management Initiatives at 19th Session of UNFF

  • India participated in the 19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), held at the UN Headquarters in New York in May 2024.
  • During the session, India highlighted the country's significant advancements in forest conservation and sustainable forest management, which led to a consistent increase in forest cover over the past fifteen years. Globally, India ranks third in the net gain, in average annual forest area, between 2010 and 2020.
  • India also highlighted the creation of the International Big Cat Alliance, another important step aimed at protecting and conserving the seven big cat species around the world through collaborative international efforts.
  • The UNFF 19 culminated in a declaration to take urgent and accelerated actions to halt deforestation and forest degradation and to prevent land degradation, including the implementation of the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests and the achievement of the Global Forest Goals.

Dileep Sanghani Elected As Chairman of IFFCO

  • The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) successfully conducted its 15th RGB elections for its Board of Directors, marking a remarkable milestone in cooperative governance. This massive exercise, which spanned over two months, encompassed participation from more than 36,000 cooperative societies across the nation.
  • The elections, held at IFFCO's corporate office in New Delhi, saw the emergence of Dileep Sanghani as the Chairman and Balvir Singh as the Vice Chairman of IFFCO. Additionally, 21 Directors were elected to represent their respective constituencies on the Board.
  • Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited, also known as IFFCO, is a multi-state cooperative society engaged in the manufacture and marketing of fertiliser. IFFCO is headquartered in New Delhi, India. It started in 1967 with 57 member cooperatives.

India Inks 10-year Deal to Operate Iran's Chabahar Port

  • India signed a 10-year contract with Iran to develop and operate the Iranian port of Chabahar, strengthening relations with a strategic Middle Eastern nation.
  • India has been developing the port in Chabahar on Iran's south-eastern coast along the Gulf of Oman as a way to transport goods to Iran, Afghanistan and central Asian countries, bypassing the port of Karachi and Gwadar in its rival Pakistan.
  • Chabahar Port's significance transcends its role as a mere conduit between India and Iran; it serves as a vital trade artery connecting India with Afghanistan and Central Asian Countries," India's Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said in Tehran, after the signing of the agreement.
  • This linkage has unlocked new avenues for trade and fortified supply chain resilience across the region.

Russia's Controversial Oil and Gas Discovery in British Antarctic Territory

  • In a development that has raised eyebrows globally, Russia has claimed to have discovered massive oil and gas reserves in the British Antarctic Territory, a region currently protected under the 1959 Antarctic Treaty. According to evidence submitted to the Commons Environment Audit Committee, the reserves uncovered by Russian research ships contain around 511 billion barrels worth of oil, a staggering amount equivalent to approximately 10 times the North Sea's output over the last 50 years.

NASA Announces Plans to Build First Railway System on Moon

  • As the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) readies to return astronauts to the moon, it has announced its plans to build a levitating robot train on the lunar surface. In a blog post, the American space agency provided details about the project called "Flexible Levitation on a Track (FLOAT)", which aims to provide a "robotic transport system" to support future lunar activities of astronauts visiting the moon. The transport system will be critical to the daily operation of a sustainable lunar base in the 2030s.

Abha Khatua Sets National Record in Women's Shot Put

  • Abha bettered the national mark with an eye-catching throw of 18.41 metres at the National Federation Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. She had jointly held the previous record with Manpreet Kaur at 18.06m, which she achieved at the Asian Championships in Bangkok in July 2023 while winning silver.
  • Abha could have made the qualifying mark of 18.81m for the Paris Olympics. Her third attempt was pegged at 18.85m but was registered as a foul throw.

Japan Wins 2024 Azlan Shah Hockey Cup

  • In a dramatic conclusion to the 2024 Azlan Shah Hockey Cup, Japan defeated Pakistan in a penalty shootout after a tense 2-2 draw, dashing Pakistan's hopes that had reached the tournament final for the first time since 2011 following a series of stellar performances.
  • Six teams participated in the event, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Canada. Pakistan won the Azlan Shah Cup title three times in the past and was the second runners-up in the last edition which was also held in Malaysia two years ago.
  • The Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy is organised by the Malaysia Hockey Confederation and invites six countries to participate. Initiated as a biennial tournament in 1983, its popularity led to it becoming an annual event in 1999.

China, Cambodia to Hold Joint Military Exercises

  • Cambodia and China will hold joint annual military drills amid US concerns that Beijing could use a Cambodian naval base to expand its influence in the region.
  • A Chinese warship brought troops and materials for the exercises in the coastal city of Sihanoukvill.
  • More than 2,000 troops, including 760 Chinese military personnel, will participate in the drills at a training centre in central Kampong Chhnang province and at sea off Preah Sihanouk province.
  • Cambodia has long been a staunch ally of China, receiving billions of dollars in investments.
  • The 15-day joint Cambodian-Chinese drills, dubbed Golden Dragon, will involve 14 warships -- three from China -- two helicopters and 69 tanks, and include live-fire, anti-terrorism and humanitarian exercises.

UN Proclaims 25th May as World Football Day

  • The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed May 25 as the World Football Day, by adopting a resolution during the 80th plenary meeting of the General Assembly in New York. The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament in history with the representation of all regions as part of the 1924 Summer Olympic Games, held in Paris. The resolution was passed unanimously by the 193-member General Assembly.
  • Taher M. El-Sonni, Permanent Representative of the State of Libya to the United Nations, introduced the draft resolution under Sport for development and peace: building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal during the meeting. The Assembly later adopted the resolution proclaiming May 25 as World Football Day.

Kerala Govt Ramp up Efforts to Tackle Bird Flu Outbreak

  • In light of incidents of bird flu cases in Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts, the Kerala government directed the authorities there to step up efforts to bring the situation under control. State Animal Husbandry Minister J. Chinchu Rani chaired a high-level meeting to assess the situation in various poultry and duck farms in the above districts, as well as those under the department. The minister convened the meeting following the outbreak of avian influenza reported from the Government Duck Breeding Centre at Niranam in Pathanamthitta. An official release stated that 4,081 ducks would be culled at the Niranam Government Duck Breeding Centre.
