CJI D. Y. Chandrachud to Attend 'J20'- Summit of Heads of Apex Courts of G20 Members - In Brazil
Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud has been invited to attend 'J20' a summit of Heads of Supreme Courts and Constitutional Courts of all the G20 members. The J20 summit is being organised by the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court in light of Brazil's presidency of G20 2024.
The event is scheduled to take place from May 12-14 and includes key dignitaries and heads of various Supreme Courts of G20 members. As per the official list, these include participation from the African Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, European Union, France, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, Portugal and Spain.
The conference which is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil focuses on deliberating upon 3 major themes - (1) The promotion of citizenship and social inclusion by the Judiciary; (2) Climate litigation and sustainable development and (3) Digital transformation and the use of technology to enhance judicial efficiency.
Chad's Military Dictator Idriss Deby Wins Presidential Election
Mahamat Idris Deby Itno, Chad's military dictator and interim President, secured victory in the presidential election 2024. This provisional result, announced by the National Election Management Agency is poised to extend Deby's rule for another six years.
Idriss Deby, Mahamat's father, ruled Chad for 30 years with an iron fist until his death in 2021. Mahamat Idris Deby took over as interim president after his father's demise, subsequently consolidating power with the support of army generals.
Mahamat Idris Deby Itno clinched 61.03% of the votes, while his closest competitor, Prime Minister Succes Masra, garnered only 18.53%.
India Contributes $500,000 to UN Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund
India reaffirmed its dedication to the global fight against terrorism by contributing $500,000 to the UN Counter-Terrorism Trust Fund (CTTF). Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the contribution to Under Secretary General Vladimir Voronkov. This financial support adds to India's ongoing commitment, totalling $2.55 million, aimed at bolstering multilateral efforts against terrorism.
The UN Security Council, one of the primary organs of the United Nations, is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Comprising 15 members, including five permanent and ten non-permanent members, the Council addresses global security issues and adopts resolutions to address emerging threats. Wipro Appoints Vinay Firake as CEO of APMEA Strategic Market Unit
IT major Wipro appointed Vinay Firake as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Asia Pacific, India, Middle East, and Africa (APMEA) strategic market unit (SMU), effective immediately. Vinay will be based in Dubai and report to Chief Executive Srini Pallia. He will also join the Wipro executive board.
Firake succeeded Anis Chenchah.
Firake has been with Wipro for 26 years, serving in various leadership roles. He was the senior vice president and managing director of the Wipro Nordics business unit based in Stockholm, where he led operations across all industries and services. Before that, he led the manufacturing and automotive business unit in Europe and held various roles spanning Europe and North America.
Nisha Dahiya Reaches Final, Secures Paris Berth (12)
Nisha Dahiya became the fifth Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Paris Olympics after prevailing over Romania's Alexandra Anghel in the 68kg semi-finals at the world Olympics qualifiers. This is the first time India will have five women wrestlers at the quadrennial extravaganza.
Nisha, a world U-23 bronze medallist and Asian Championships silver medal winner, beat Anghel 8-4 and entered the final.
New Zealand's Colin Munro Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Colin Munro, the hard-hitting New Zealand top-order batsman, announced his retirement from international cricket after being overlooked for the 2024 T20 World Cup. The decision marked the end of an era for the explosive left-hander, who etched his name as one of the most destructive T20 batters in the world.
Throughout his international career, Munro donned the Kiwi colours in 1 Test, 57 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, amassing a total of 3,010 runs. However, it was in the shortest format of the game that Munro truly showcased his batting prowess, earning a reputation as a T20 specialist.

India-France to Hold 7th Edition of Exercise 'Shakti' from May 13-26
In a bid to strengthen defence ties, India and France will conduct the 7th edition of the Joint Military Exercise 'Shakti' from May 13-26 in the Umroi region of Meghalaya.
The exercise aims to enhance the joint military capacity of both sides to undertake Multi-Domain Operations in a Sub Conventional scenario.
Additionally, the joint exercise will facilitate the development of interoperability bonhomie, and camaraderie between the Armed Forces of both nations.
Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla Assumes Charge as Chief of Personnel
Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla assumed charge as the Chief of Personnel of the Navy.
Commissioned in the Navy on January 1, 1989, Vice Admiral Bhalla held a number of specialist and operational appointments in his career both at sea and onshore.
After completing his specialisation course in communication and electronic warfare, he served as a specialist on board several frontline warships. He commanded INS Nishank, INS Taragiri and INS Beas. He was also the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF).
Vice Admiral Bhalla was the officer in 'tactical command' for the prestigious President's Fleet Review (PFR-22) and during the sea phase of the Navy's flagship multinational exercise MILAN-22. He has held important staff appointments at Naval Headquarters and also held a diplomatic assignment overseas.
Padma Shri recipient Punjabi poet and writer Surjit Singh Patar passed away. He was 79.
Patar's poetic works include Hawa Vich Likhe Harf, Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varanmala, Patjhar Di Pazeb, Lafzaan Di Dargah and Surzameen. He received the Padma Shri in 2012.
Patar held esteemed positions, serving as the President of Punjab Arts Council, Chandigarh, and previously as the President of Punjabi Sahit Akademi. His contributions to literature and culture will be remembered fondly by many.

IIT Guwahati, NSDC Introduce Daksh Gurukul Skill Academy for Credit Based Programs to Youths
National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati introduced the Daksh Gurukul Skill Academy to provide credit-linked programs in new-age skills to the youth.
