EU Allocates $1 Billion Aid to Lebanon

  • The European Union, led by EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, pledged $1 billion in aid to Lebanon. Announced during her visit to Lebanon, this commitment aims to bolster the country's socio-economic stability, grappling with a profound economic crisis since late 2019. The funds, available until 2027, are designated to enhance basic services such as education and health, in addition to fostering economic momentum through necessary reforms.
  • This financial support came in response to Lebanon's dual challenges of hosting a significant number of refugees and managing increased irregular migration.
  • Lebanon is currently home to around two million Syrian refugees, the highest per capita globally, with almost 785,000 registered with the United Nations amidst ongoing regional conflicts.

Adani Green Energy Secures $400 Million Financing for 750 MW Solar Projects

  • Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) successfully secured $400 million (approximately Rs. 29,600 crore) from a consortium of five leading international banks.
  • The funds will be used for its ongoing 750 MW solar power projects in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
  • It will support the completion and commissioning of these solar projects, with operations expected to begin from November 2024 onwards.
  • One of the key projects, located in Rajasthan, boasts a capacity of 500 MW and has a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) in place with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
  • The second project, situated in Gujarat's Khavda region, is a 250 MW standalone merchant power project within the world's largest renewable energy (RE) cluster.
  • The consortium of lenders includes Cooperative Rabobank UA, DBS Bank Ltd, Intesa Sanpaolo SpA, MUFG Bank Ltd, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.

  • In the dynamic landscape of Indian start-ups, former BharatPe COO Dhruv Dhanraj Bahl stepped into the world of venture capital with the launch of his maiden fund, Eternal Capital, with a substantial corpus of Rs. 240 crore, including a greenshoe option.
  • Eternal Capital is sector-agnostic, focusing on building a diversified portfolio of startups addressing future solutions. Key sectors of interest include SaaS, clean tech, sports tech, and consumer/D2C startups, aligning with evolving market trends.

Victoria Shi, the World's 1st AI Diplomat Representing Ukraine

  • Artificial Intelligence is rapidly gaining a stronghold in every aspect of human life. From being an intelligent assistant enhancing productivity at work, now it seems AI has taken on a bigger role. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs introduced an AI-generated avatar as its digital spokesperson. This is a first in the world of diplomacy.
  • The Ministry said that it would 'for the first time in history' use a digital spokeswoman named Victoria Shi to read its statements. Reportedly, the statements will be written by humans. The AI spokeswoman moves her head and hands as she speaks.
  • Moreover, the Ministry has taken adequate measures to combat issues like deepfake. Each of Victoria's statements will include a unique QR code linking to the official text version on the Ministry's website.

US Space Scientists Rediscover Satellite Missing For 25 Years

  • In a case of cosmic hide-and-seek, the US Space Force has located a tiny, experimental satellite that went missing in orbit for a staggering 25 years.
  • The satellite, named S73-7 Infra-Red Calibration Balloon (IRCB), was launched in 1974 alongside a massive Cold War-era spy satellite. Unfortunately, upon deployment, the IRCB malfunctioned and never inflated to its intended size, rendering it useless for its intended purpose.

Powell to Lead strong West Indies Team, Rookie Shamar Called in for T20 World Cup

  • Rajasthan Royals power-hitter Rovman Powell will lead a strong West Indies squad, filled with some of the world's best franchise freelancers, in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Americas.
  • One of the prominent names included is rookie pace sensation Shamar Joseph, who is part of Lucknow Super Giants in this edition of IPL 2024.
  • The team bears a formidable look with some of the biggest power-hitters in world cricket like Nicholas Pooran of Lucknow Super Giants, Andre Russell of Kolkata Knight Riders, Shimron Hetmyer of Rajasthan Royals apart from skipper Powell himself being part of the 15.
  • Not to forget Romario Shepherd of Mumbai Indians, Sherfane Rutherford (KKR) and Shai Hope (Delhi Capitals), who are also plying their trade in the cash-rich IPL
  • The two-time T20 World Cup champions are clubbed alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Uganda. They will start their campaign against Papua New Guinea in Guyana on June 2.

National Women's Hockey League 2024 Commenced in Ranchi

  • The National Women's Hockey League 2024 kicked off in Jharkhand, featuring eight teams.
  • Jharkhand faced Mizoram at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Stadium in Ranchi.
  • Hockey India officials, including Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh and Treasurer Sekar J Manoharan, welcomed Sports Authority of India's Director General Sandeep Pradhan to the inaugural day.
  • The opening match of the tournament turned out to be an entertaining affair in which the Hockey Association of Odisha beat Hockey Haryana 4-1. It was Haryana which drew first blood in the match when Shashi Khasa (3') capitalised on a fumble made by Odisha's goalkeeper Bhabhika Majhi during a penalty corner and netted the ball in from a point-blank range.

India, Maldives Hold Meeting to Resolve Disputes

  • Days before the possible visit of Maldives Foreign Minister, India and the Maldives held the fourth meeting of the India-Maldives high-level core group.
  • The core group was set to resolve issues that have affected the relationship after new Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu announced that he would review Male's dependency on Indian security and economic assistance.
  • Both sides continued their discussions on defence cooperation, development cooperation projects, efforts to enhance bilateral trade and investment, and capacity-building initiatives.
  • However, a Maldivian statement said that both sides also reviewed "the ongoing efforts to enable continued operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medevac services to the people of Maldives". It was further agreed that the fifth meeting of the core group will be held in Male on a mutually agreeable date during the months of June and July.

CAG Murmu, Nepal's Auditor General sign MoU for auditing collaboration

  • Comptroller and Auditor General of India Girish Chandra Murmu and Auditor General of Nepal Toyam Raya signed a MoU to enhance auditing collaboration.
  • The agreement aims to promote the exchange of expertise, capacity development, and mutual assistance in audits.
  • The signing ceremony marks a milestone in fostering closer ties and reaffirms shared values between the two institutions.
  • The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), Girish Chandra Murmu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Toyam Raya, Auditor General of Nepal to enhance cooperation between the two institutions.
  • Girish Chandra Murmu, who is on an official visit to Nepal, signed the MoU in Kathmandu, Nepal, in the presence of dignitaries from both countries.

Eight Railway Station in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh Renamed

  • The Centre approved renaming 8 Amethi railway stations in Uttar Pradesh. A no-objection-certificate (NOC) was issued to rename Fursatganj Railway Station as Tapeshwarnath Dham, Kasimpur Halt as Jais City, Jais City as Guru Gorakhnath Dham, Bani as Swami Paramhans, Misrauli as Maa Kalikan Dham, Nihalgarh as Maharaja Bijli Pasi, and Akbarganj as Maa Kalikan Dham, according to the home ministry.
  • The decision to rename the railway stations in Amethi follows persistent demands from the local community to honor prominent local figures and reflect the region's cultural heritage. The renaming initiative aims to align infrastructure with the cultural ethos of the region and foster a sense of pride among residents.

India, Indonesia Resolve to Expand Defence Ties

  • India and Indonesia vowed to expand overall bilateral defence ties, especially in areas maritime security and industrial engagement for production of military equipment. Various aspects of defence and strategic relations between the two countries figured at the seventh India-Indonesia Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting that took place in Delhi.
  • The defence ministry said both sides expressed satisfaction at the expanding scope of defence cooperation.
  • The progress made on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives deliberated in meetings of working groups on defence cooperation and defence industries cooperation was also reviewed by the co-chairs.

Biden to Honour Olympian Katie Ledecky, Actor Michelle Yeoh with Medal of Freedom

  • A winner of seven Olympic gold medals, a leader of the Mississippi civil rights struggle and a pioneer of television's tabloid talk show genre were part of this year's (2024) class of Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients.
  • U.S. President Joe Biden extended the highest U.S. civilian award to 19 people, including Team USA swimmer Katie Ledecky, the assassinated civil rights leader Medgar Evers and television host Phil Donahue.
  • The honorees list played special homage to "firsts" in their field, including the "Everything Everywhere All at Once" actress Michelle Yeoh, who was the first Asian to win the Academy Award for Best Actress; Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman in space; and Jim Thorpe, the versatile athlete who became the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal in 1912.
  • The awards handed out at the White House.

UNESCO Guillermo Cano Prize 2024 Awarded to Palestine Journalists in Gaza (05)

  • In a gesture of solidarity and recognition, Palestinian journalists covering the crisis in Gaza were named laureates of the 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. The announcement came from the recommendation of an International Jury of media professionals, emphasising the courage and commitment of these journalists amidst challenging circumstances.
  • Mauricio Weibel, Chair of the International Jury, highlighted the immense debt owed to these journalists for their courage and dedication to freedom of expression.
  • Established in 1997, the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the defense and promotion of press freedom, especially in the face of danger. Named after Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano Isaza, the prize honors his legacy and is funded by various foundations and organizations committed to press freedom.

Archaeologists Discover a Massive 7000-year-old pre-historic Settlement in Serbia

  • A prehistoric settlement of massive size was discovered in the Banat region of northeastern Serbia. Archaeologists date back the previously known settlement to some 7,000 years, much later than the Late Neolithic period.
  • This discovery is of outstanding importance, as hardly any larger Late Neolithic settlements are known in the Serbian Banat region.
  • The settlement is located near the Tamis River in the Banat region of northeastern Serbia, a landlocked country in the Balkans.
