Sri Lankan Cabinet Approves Renovation of Kankesanthurai Port with Indian Financial Grant

  • The Sri Lankan Cabinet approved the renovation of the Kankesanthurai Port (KKS Port) in the Northern Province, with India agreeing to grant the entire estimated cost of the project, amounting to USD 61.5 million. The decision highlights India's commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and supporting Sri Lanka's infrastructure development.
  • The KKS Port, covering an area of approximately 16 acres, is located 104 km (56 nautical miles) from Karaikal Port in Puducherry, India.
  • A direct passenger ship service connects Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu to the KKS Port, covering a distance of 111 km (60 nautical miles) in about 3.5 hours.
  • The port has the potential to boost socio-economic development and cultural relations between India and Sri Lanka, particularly in the northern region of the island nation.
  • The KKS Port began operations as a commercial port in 1950.

IIT Guwahati Hosts Semiconductor Horizons Workshop to Foster Semiconductor Synergy

  • Aiming to foster innovation and translational research collaboration in Semiconductor Technology in the State of Assam and beyond, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati successfully conducted the Semiconductor Horizons Workshop at the Institute campus.
  • Organised in collaboration with Ministry of Education, Government of India; Government of Assam; Viksit Bharat Abhiyan; and Tata Electronics, the workshop aimed to foster education, skill development, Innovation, capacity building in the semiconductor domain, and technology transfer to strengthen semiconductor eco-system.
  • The workshop featured various sessions covering topics such as recent advancements in heterogenous integration in semiconductor packaging, test and assemble, Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, Very-large-scale integration (VLSI), compound semiconductors, and optoelectronic devices, with expert speakers from industries, academicians and policy makers sharing insights on the latest trends and advancements in the field of semiconductor science and technology.

India to Host 2025 BWF World Junior Badminton Championships in Guwahati

  • The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that India will host the prestigious 2025 BWF World Junior Championships at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati. This marks a significant milestone as India will be hosting this premier badminton event for the first time since 2008, when it was held in Pune.
  • After a gap of 17 years, the BWF World Junior Championships will once again take place in India. The exact dates for the 2025 edition will be announced later.
  • In another significant development, the 2026 edition of the BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals will be held in Horsens, Denmark. These prestigious team championships, featuring the world's best men's and women's badminton teams, will be hosted by Denmark for the second time, following the successful 2021 edition held in Aarhus.
  • The Badminton World Federation (BWF), established in 1934 and headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is the international governing body for the sport of badminton. Recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the BWF oversees and promotes the development of badminton globally.

Indian Boxers Confirm 22 Medals with 7 in Finals

  • Brijesh Tamta and Aryan alongside five other boxers entered the finals as Indian pugilists assured themselves 22 medals in various categories at the ASBC Asian U-22 & Youth Boxing Championships 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Of the 22 medals, 12 were assured by women at the prestigious tournament.

Rahul Gandhi Becomes Third Generation Gandhi to Contest from Rae Bareli

  • Rahul Gandhi's nomination from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli has reignited focus on the Congress party pocket borough, first represented in the Lok Sabha by his grandfather Feroze Gandhi in 1952. During his tenure, Feroze Gandhi had established a strong foundation which was later nurtured and strengthened by his wife, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She had won the seat in 1967, 1971, and 1980, and the seat was retained by friends and family members of the Gandhi family.
  • Rahul Gandhi is the third generation of the Gandhis to contest from Rae Bareli.
  • The BJP sought to wrest the only remaining Congress citadel in Uttar Pradesh, where the party has been out of power since 1989. It won one of the five assembly seats in Rae Bareli, an Other Backward Classes (OBC) dominated constituency, in 2022 as the BJP stormed back to power in the state for a second time even as Priyanka Gandhi campaigned across the state. Congress's ally Samajwadi Party won the other four assembly segments.

Amethi Gets First Non-Gandhi Congress Candidate since 1998

  • The Congress party named Kishori Lal Sharma as its candidate in the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Sharma will be pitted against BJP's Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 general elections by more than 50,000 votes.
  • Sharma's nomination came as Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers from Rae Bareli, his family's traditional bastion neighbouring Amethi. The Gandhi family's influence in Amethi has been disrupted since Rahul Gandhi's defeat in 2019, and Sharma's candidacy is seen as an attempt to have a foothold in the region.
  • The last non-Gandhi Congress candidate in Amethi was Satish Sharma, who won twice after the seat was vacated following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Satish Sharma was defeated in 1998, following Gandhis came back to reign in Amethi from 1999.

Army Looks at Creating New Unit to Play Role of Adversary in Wargames

  • The Army is working on creating a new unit that can simulate the role of an adversary during military exercises and wargame training.
  • Plans for the new unit — OPFOR, or "opposing forces" — are currently under discussion and will be implemented after final approval from the Army hierarchy.
  • During the Army Commanders' Conference last month (April 2024), top officers had decided to explore the feasibility of creating a tailor-made organisation to function as an adversarial force that can carry out realistic wargaming and training to enhance the force's combat potential. Countries such as the US have already employed this concept extensively.
  • As per reports, the new unit will be raised from existing ones. It will look at employing weapons, operating methods and tactics of one or more adversaries so that regular troops experience a scenario that is close to an actual war.

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor Assumes Charge of Air Force Training Command

  • Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor assumed role as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Training Command.
  • Commissioned into the Fighter stream of Indian Air Force in 1986, he boasts over 3400 hours of flying experience.
  • Recognized for meritorious service, he has bagged Vayu Sena Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.
  • He undertook a diplomatic assignment as defence attaché in Pakistan. So far, he has attained more than 3,400 hours of flying experience. He was awarded Vayu Sena Medal in 2008 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022.

International Firefighter's Day

  • International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4 every year. This day is dedicated to the firefighters who put their lives on the line every day to protect their communities and the environment. The day is also observed to remember the firefighters who have sacrificed their lives while serving the community.
  • On 2 December 1998, a tragic accident happened in in Linton, Australia, in which, resulting in the death of five firefighters from Geelong West Fire Brigade on the spot. The establishment of International Firefighters' Day took inspiration from that dreadful event. The five firefighters were on their way to refill their tanker with water when the truck was struck by a violent wind change, engulfing them in flames and killing all five. They were Garry Vredeveldt, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong.
  • The official date for International Firefighters' Day is 4 May. This date was chosen because on this day, St. Florian, the patron saint of all firefighters, was killed. St. Florian was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He died after trying to protect the same humane ideas as firefighters all over the world.

NEET UG 2024 Dress Code: Heavy Clothes, Shoes - Check Complete List of Things Not Allowed

  • The National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5 will conduct the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test Undergraduate 2024 (NEET UG 2024). Apart from taking the NEET UG hall ticket to the exam centre, NTA released a set of guidelines to be followed on the exam day.
  • Here is the list of things allowed and not allowed to be brought inside the exam hall. Moreover, the NEET UG aspirants have to follow a proper dress code.
  • Heavy clothes and long sleeves are not permitted. Shoes are not permitted. Slippers and sandals with low heels are permitted
  • The candidates wearing articles or objects of faith – customary, cultural or religious should report at the examination centre by 12:30 pm so that there is enough time for proper frisking without any inconvenience to the candidate while maintaining the sanctity of the examination.

Sanjaya Kumar Mishra to Head GST Appellate Tribunal

  • Retired Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra was appointed as the President of the Goods & Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) by the Centre. The move aims to streamline the resolution of disputes concerning businesses efficiently. The appointment, made by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet based on the recommendation of the Search-cum-Selection Committee, comes with a salary of Rs. 2.50 lakh per month for a tenure of four years.
  • GST Tribunals are envisioned as specialized bodies to address GST-related disputes promptly and efficiently. Their establishment is essential to ensure fairness, accountability, and the rule of law in tax administration. With the rise in appeals against orders of first Appellate Authorities, the need for dedicated and specialized GSTATs has become even more pronounced. Businesses previously had to resort to High Courts, resulting in prolonged and costly legal battles. The establishment of GSTATs is expected to alleviate this burden, fostering a conducive environment for business and enhancing ease of doing business in the country.
