UK's New 'World First' Laws Crack Down on Smart Cyber Attacks

  • All Internet-connected smart devices will be required to meet minimum security standards under what the UK government has dubbed as "world first" laws, to protect consumers and businesses from hacking and cyber-attacks.
  • Under the new regime, manufacturers will be banned from having weak, easily guessable default passwords like "admin" or "12345" and if there is a common password, the user will be prompted to change it on start-up.
  • "From today, consumers will have greater peace of mind that their smart devices are protected from cyber criminals, as we introduce world first laws that will make sure their personal privacy, data and finances are safe," said UK Minister for Cyber Viscount Camrose, Jonathan Berry.

Humza Yousaf Resigns as Scottish First Minister

  • Humza Yousaf, Scotland's first Muslim First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has announced his resignation amid political turmoil. The decision follows the collapse of the SNP's coalition with the Scottish Greens, triggering opposition no-confidence motions. Yousaf cited a refusal to compromise his values and principles for political power, amidst challenges including a funding scandal and the departure of former leader Nicola Sturgeon.
  • In a televised address, Yousaf emphasised his unwillingness to compromise on his values or engage in political dealings solely for the sake of retaining power. This principled stance comes amidst internal debates within the SNP over policy approaches and the party's attempts to reconnect with voters.
  • Yousaf, born to Pakistani immigrants in Glasgow, made history as Scotland's youngest elected leader and the first Muslim to head a major political party. Despite his skills as a communicator and efforts to unite the SNP, his tenure faced challenges, culminating in his resignation after just over a year in office.

IREDA Granted Prestigious 'Navratna' Status by Government

  • The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), a public sector enterprise, was granted the coveted 'Navratna' status by the government. This prestigious designation takes the total number of Navratna PSEs (Public Sector Enterprises) in India to 17.
  • With the Navratna status, IREDA gains significant autonomy and financial flexibility. The company now has the authority to invest up to Rs. 1,000 crore without seeking prior approval from the government, allowing for faster decision-making and project execution.
  • The Navratna designation is awarded to public sector undertakings in India that have demonstrated exceptional financial performance, operational efficiency, and global competitiveness. These companies are granted enhanced autonomy in areas such as capital expenditure, investment in joint ventures or subsidiaries, and human resources management.
  • Established in March 1987 and headquartered in New Delhi, IREDA is an Indian public sector enterprise that offers financial assistance to projects that produce electricity using fresh and sustainable sources. With the government holding a 75% ownership stake, IREDA has been at the forefront of promoting renewable energy projects across the country.

Sri Lanka Lifts Import Restrictions on Trucks and Heavy Vehicles

  • In a notable development, Sri Lanka has decided to lift the ban on imports of trucks and heavy vehicles, marking the first rollback of such restrictions since March 2020. The decision, outlined in a gazette notification, signifies a shift towards economic recovery under President Ranil Wickremesinghe's leadership.

Indian Athletes Shine at 21st U-20 Asian Athletics Championship 2024

  • The Indian athletes continued their impressive medal-winning spree at the 21st U-20 Asian Athletics Championship 2024, with Harshit Kumar clinching a gold medal in the highly competitive Hammer throw event. His outstanding throw of 66.7 meters secured India's latest gold at the prestigious event.
  • At the end of the third day of the championship, the Indian contingent had amassed a total of 18 medals, including five from the latest round of events. The haul consisted of one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, further cementing India's position as a powerhouse in Asian athletics.
  • The 21st Asian U20 Athletics Championship, organised by the Asian Athletics Association in association with the UAE Athletics Federation in Dubai, serves as a qualifying event for the 2024 World U20 Athletics Championships. The global event is set to take place in Lima, Peru, from August 27 to 31, 2024.
  • With 60 Indian athletes, including 31 men and 29 women, participating in the championship, India has already secured an impressive 18 medals. This remarkable performance builds on the success of the previous edition in Yecheon, South Korea, where India finished third on the medal table behind Japan and China, with 19 medals.

MS Dhoni Sets New IPL Record in CSK's Dominant Win

  • The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a resounding 78-run victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday, potentially shaping the trajectory of both teams' 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaigns. This emphatic win significantly boosted CSK's net run rate, propelling them to the third position in the league standings. Conversely, SRH suffered their second consecutive defeat, slipping to the fourth spot.
  • The match witnessed a remarkable milestone for the legendary MS Dhoni, as he became the first player to achieve 150 victories in the IPL. Dhoni's remarkable feat leaves his CSK teammate Ravindra Jadeja and former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma tied for a distant second with 133 wins each.
  • Prior to the 2024 tournament, Dhoni stepped down as CSK's captain, handing over the reins to top-order batter Ruturaj Gaikwad. This marks the second time Dhoni has relinquished the CSK captaincy, having previously done so at the start of the 2022 season when Ravindra Jadeja was appointed captain.

Bismah Maroof Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • Bismah Maroof, one of Pakistan's most high-profile women cricketers and former captain, has announced retirement from all international cricket.
  • Bismah, 32, was forced into a long break from cricket, first due to a fitness issue in 2020 and then after giving birth to a baby girl in August 2021.
  • Bismah had grabbed headlines when she took her baby to the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand. She was the first Pakistani woman cricketer to avail a 12-month maternity leave with pay policy.
  • A left-handed batter, Bismah made her ODI debut against India in 2006 and went on to represent Pakistan in 276 international matches, the most by any Pakistan women cricketer.
  • She had made her T20I debut against Ireland in 2009 She has scored 6,262 international runs, including 33 half-centuries, and has taken 80 international wickets with her right-arm leg-spin.

Tripura Zilla Parishad Chief among 3 Indian Women Elected Representatives Chosen for UN Event

  • A zilla parishad chief from Tripura is among three women elected representatives from India who will attend an event held on the sidelines of the 57th session of the United Nations Commission on Population Development in the United States till May 3.
  • The three public representatives would represent the country at the event, "Localising the Sustainable Development Goals: Women in Local Governance in India Lead the Way", organised by the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) in New York. They were selected by the Union Ministry for Panchayati Raj.
  • Among the three women is Supriya Das Dutta, the zilla parishad sabhadhipati in Sepahijala district in Tripura.

World Immunisation Week 2024 Observed on April 24 to 30

  • World Immunisation Week (WIW) is a global healthcare event, typically celebrated every year in the last week of April between 24 and 30, intending to promote vaccine usage and protect people of all ages from infectious diseases.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO), in association with various international and local groups, joined hands together in this worldwide event to protect local communities from vaccine-preventable diseases and provide education by conducting various campaigns and activities. The WIW 2024 activities focused on emphasising the importance of having vaccines and immunisation in addition to aiding the governments in providing the necessary technical assistance and information required to launch effective immunisation programmes.
  • This year 2024, the World Immunisation Week theme is 'Humanly Possible: Saving lives through immunisation'. 

International Jazz Day 2024 Celebrated Annually on April 30th

  • International Jazz Day, celebrated annually on April 30th, is a global event that celebrates the power of jazz to bring people together and promote peace, unity, and intercultural dialogue. 
  • The 2024 edition of International Jazz Day will be celebrated in more than 190 countries, with the city of Tangier serving as the Global Host. This marks the first time a city on the African continent has hosted the event, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and jazz traditions of the region.
  • Tangier, a melting pot of cultural expressions, is located at the crossroads of Europe and Africa. The city boasts a long, rich history of jazz and is known for its jazz heritage, having hosted numerous world-renowned jazz artists over the years, including Josephine Baker, Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Herbie Mann, and the jazz master pianist Randy Weston.
  • This year marks a significant milestone as the city of Tangier, Morocco becomes the first African host city for the global celebration.
  • The four-day celebration, from April 27-30, emphasizes Tangier's jazz heritage and highlights the cultural and artistic ties between people in Morocco, Europe, and Africa. The event includes a series of education programs, events for students of all ages, and conversations about the history of jazz and its impact on Tangier.

Ayushman Bharat Diwas 2024, Celebrating India's Healthcare Initiative

  • Ayushman Bharat Diwas is celebrated annually on April 30 to raise awareness about the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and its goals. This year, it falls on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. The day was established by the government to highlight the scheme's objective of providing better access to affordable and quality healthcare services, especially for the underprivileged.
  • Launched in 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana (PM-JAY) is a healthcare scheme that offers free health insurance of Rs. 5 lakh to more than 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families every year. Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan's Alok Shukla to Receive Goldman Environmental Prize

  • Forest and tribal rights activist Alok Shukla was selected for the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize – 2024 for successfully leading a community campaign that saved 4,45,000 (4.45 lakh) acres of biodiversity-rich forests from 21 planned coal mines in Chhattisgarh.
  • Also known as the Green Nobel, the prize recognises grassroots environmental heroes from roughly the world's six inhabited continental regions — Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands & Island Nations, North America, and South & Central America.
  • The Goldman Environmental Foundation mentioned that the government cancelled the auction of 21 proposed coal mines in Hasdeo Aranya, whose pristine forests — popularly known as the lungs of Chhattisgarh — are one of the largest intact forest areas in India.
  • In 2010, the Union Environment Ministry declared the Hasdeo forests a "no-go" zone for mining in recognition of their rich biodiversity but the declaration was never formalised into law and successive governments have attempted to jumpstart mining operations.
  • The Goldman Environmental Prize honors grassroots environmental champions globally for their impactful actions.
  • This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Goldman Environmental Prize.

NCERT to Review Books Every Year

  • The Ministry of Education (MoE) has asked the NCERT to conduct a review of its textbooks and update them on yearly basis. So far, there has been no mandate on the frequency of updating NCERT textbooks. However, the National Council of Educational Research and Training has been occasionally revising and updating content since 2017.
  • A rationalisation exercise was also conducted in view of the closure of schools due to the pandemic but there were allegations from a section of agenda-driven editing.

Bharat Biotech's Krishna Ella Leads Indian Vaccine Manufacturers

Harappan Habitat Found Near Rakhigarhi Burial Site in Hisar District

  • In a major discovery, archaeologists found a habitat structure at the burial site at mound number seven in Rakhigarhi, an iconic Harappan site in Hisar district of Haryana.
  • As per reports, the mud brick walls of the habitat structure indicated that it could be a site of the early Harappan era dating back to 6000 BCE (about 8,000 years old).
