Axis Bank Re-appoints Amitabh Chaudhry as MD & CEO

  • Axis Bank's board approved the re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as Managing Director & CEO for another three years, effective January 2025, subject to RBI approval. Alongside Chaudhry, Independent Directors Meena Ganesh and Gopalaraman Padmanabhan were also been re-appointed for four years each.
  • Amitabh Chaudhry, who assumed the role of MD & CEO in January 2019, brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at HDFC Life. His re-appointment signifies continuity and stability in Axis Bank's leadership, bolstering investor confidence amid evolving market dynamics.

India's First Multi-Purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project Inaugurated in Himachal Pradesh

  • India took a significant step in renewable energy with the inauguration of its first multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project at the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Himachal Pradesh's Jhakri. Spearheaded by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), the project aims to produce green hydrogen through renewable energy sources.
  • The project features a 20Nm3/hr electrolyzer and 25kW fuel cell capacity-based green hydrogen pilot system. It is the nation's first multi-purpose green hydrogen generation plant, serving both electricity generation and the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating facility of NJHPS.
  • Aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the Government of India, SJVN's initiative accelerates the development of green hydrogen production infrastructure in the power sector. Geeta Kapur, Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN, emphasised the project's role in establishing green hydrogen as a clean energy source.

63% Voting in 2nd Phase, Highest 79.46% in Tripura

  • A turnout of 63.50 per cent was witnessed in the second phase of voting for the Lok Sabha elections in 88 seats across 13 states amid complaints of EVM glitches and bogus voting in some booths of Kerala and West Bengal.
  • The highest polling percentage was 79.46 in Tripura's lone seat, followed by 77.32 in ethnic violence-hit Manipur. At 54.85 per cent, UP saw the lowest voting. It was 73.62 per cent and 71.84 per cent in the three constituencies each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. Assam saw 71.11 per cent voting, as per the Election Commission's data till 8 pm. The turnout in Maharashtra was 57.83 per cent while it stood at 55.08 per cent in Bihar.
  • Voters in some villages of Rajasthan's Banswara and UP's Mathura boycotted polls over various issues, but were persuaded by authorities to cast their franchise.

Mona Wins Gold, Amir Silver in Para Shooting World Cup

  • Indian para-shooter Mona Aggarwal claimed a gold medal in women's 10m air rifle while Army man Amir Ahmed Bhatt secured a silver in 25m pistol at the WSPS World Cup in Changwon, Korea.
  • Mona claimed the R2 – 10m air rifle standing SH1 gold medal with a score of 250.8 in the final.
  • It was her second World Cup title of the year following her win in the same event at the World Cup in New Delhi in March, when she sealed a Paralympic quota.
  • Slovakia's Verónica Vadovicova (250) and Swedish shooter Anna Benson (228.8) won the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Rishabh Pant Creates Massive World Record; Becomes First Player in T20 History to Achieve a Unique Feat

  • Rishabh Pant continued his red-hot form in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) and produced a vintage innings of 88 runs in just 43 balls which included five boundaries and six sixes at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi during the all-important mid-table clash between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
  • During the course of his knock, Pant created a massive world record for the most runs by a batter against one bowler in a T20 match. Pant smashed veteran Indian pacer Mohit Sharma for 62 runs in 18 balls, which included seven boundaries and three sixes. This is not just the most runs by any batter against one bowler in any T20 match across the globe, but also the first instance of a player making 60+ runs in the same inning against one bowler.

Indian Historical Records Commission Unveils New Logo and Motto

  • The Indian Historical Records Commission (IHRC) is an apex advisory body on archival matters in India. Established in 1919, the IHRC serves as a national forum for creators, custodians, and users of records, advising the Government of India on the management of records and their use for historical research. The IHRC is headed by the Union Minister of Culture.
  • To visually communicate the unique identity and ethos of the IHRC, an online competition was launched in 2023 on the MyGov portal. From a total of 436 entries, the following design by Shaurya Pratap Singh (Delhi) was selected as the new logo and motto:
  • Logo: The lotus petal-shaped pages represent the IHRC as the resilient nodal institution for maintaining historical records.
  • The Sarnath pillar in the middle symbolises India's glorious past.
  • The brown color theme reinforces the organisation's mission of preserving and honoring India's historical records.
  • Motto: "Yatra Bhavishyatah Itihaas Rakshitah" (Where history is preserved for the future)
  • The motto holds great significance for the IHRC and its work, reflecting the Commission's commitment to ensuring the safeguarding of historical documents and making them accessible for the benefit of present and future generations.
  • The new logo and motto effectively capture the essence of the IHRC's role in identifying, collecting, cataloguing, and maintaining historical documents, manuscripts, and other sources of historical information. By doing so, the Commission ensures that valuable historical knowledge is conserved for future generations.

World Veterinary Day

Veteran Punjabi Actress Nirmal Rishi Receives Padma Shri

  • Veteran actor Nirmal Rishi, best known for her work in Punjabi film industry, was conferred with the Padma Shri award on Monday. Nirmal Rishi received the award from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremonial function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the national capital.

Air India Expands Partnership with Japan's ANA

  • Air India entered into a codeshare partnership with All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan's largest airline. This agreement, effective from May 23, 2024, will allow passengers of both airlines to combine flights between India and Japan using a single ticket.
  • Under the codeshare agreement, Air India will add its 'AI' designator code to ANA's flights between Tokyo Haneda and Delhi, as well as Tokyo Narita and Mumbai. Similarly, ANA will add its 'NH' code to Air India's flights between Tokyo Narita and Delhi.

SC's Thumbs Up to EVMs, Junks PILs Seeking Return of Paper Ballot System

  • The Supreme Court dismissed PILs seeking return to the paper ballot system or a 100% cross-verification of votes cast through EVMs with voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips even as it issued certain directions to the Election Commission to strengthen the current voting system.
  • After conducting "an in-detail review of the administrative and technical safeguards of the EVM mechanism", the Bench also rejected the demand for manual counting of VVPAT slips.
  • Giving the thumbs up to the EVM system in the midst of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bench said: "EVMs offer significant advantages. They have effectively eliminated booth capturing by restricting the rate of vote casting to 4 votes per minute, thereby prolonging the time needed and thus check insertion of bogus votes. EVMs have eliminated invalid votes, which were a major issue with paper ballots and had often sparked disputes during the counting process.
