  • Indian Oil is ranked 94th on the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's biggest corporations as of 2022.

Moody's Estimates India's GDP to be 6.1 per cent in 2024

  • Global rating agency Moody's has predicted that India's economy will grow at a slower pace in the year 2024.
  • At the same time, India's real GDP estimate for the financial year 2023-24 has been revised to 8 percent.
  • RBI has estimated the economic growth rate to be 7 in the current financial year 2024-25.

Sathiyan and Manika Batra Lose in World Mixed Doubles Olympic Qualification

  • The Indian pair of G Sathiyan and Manika Batra went down to Malaysia's Choong Javen and Lyne Karen in the quarterfinals of the World mixed doubles Olympic qualification table tennis tournament (stage 2) in Havirov, Czech Republic.
  • The Malaysian won 4-1 (11-9 11-9 11-9 7-11 11-8) over their opponents from India, who needed to win three matches to qualify for the Paris Games in this category having got a bye in the first round.

Asian Championships: Indian Wrestlers Draw a Blank on Concluding Day

  • Indian wrestlers drew a blank on the concluding day of the men's freestyle competition at the Asian Championships after Akash Dahiya and Anirudh Kumar lost their bronze-medal bouts and three others fizzled out before the medal round in their respective categories.
  • Competing in the non-Olympic 61kg category, Akash began with a close 10-8 win over Sardor Ruzimov from Uzbekistan and followed it up with a comfortable 7-3 victory over Korea's Sanghyeon Son in the quarterfinal.
  • However, Kazakhstan's Assyl Aitakyn proved too strong for the Indian in the semifinal and could not score a single point, losing his bout by technical superiority.
  • In the bronze play-off, he put up a gritty fight but eventually lost to Mongolia's Enkhbold Enkhbat by technical superiority.

Vandita Kaul New as Secretary of Department of Posts

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of Vandita Kaul (IPoS) as Secretary of the Department of Posts.
  • Vandita is an Indian Postel Service (IPoS) service officer of the 1989 batch.
  • Presently, she is posted as a Member (Banking & Direct Benefit Transfer) of Postal Services.
  • For more than 150 years, the Department of Posts (DoP) has been the backbone of the country's communication and has played a crucial role in the country's social economic development. It touches the lives of Indian citizens in many ways: delivering mails, accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance cover under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) and providing retail services like bill collection, sale of forms, etc. The DoP also acts as an agent for Government of India in discharging other services for citizens such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) wage disbursement and old age pension payments. With more than 1,55,000 post offices, the DoP has the most widely distributed postal network in the world.

India Relocates Staff in Sittwe Consulate to Yangon

  • India relocated its staff from its consulate in Myanmarese city of Sittwe to Yangon in view of the precarious security situation in that region of Myanmar.
  • As per external Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, India is closely monitoring the security situation in that country.

India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise Dustlik (14)

  • The fifth edition of India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise Dustlik will commence at Termez District in Uzbekistan from April 15 onwards.
  • Participating contingents from the Indian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan will undergo joint training sessions during the exercise.
  • The fourth edition of the joint military exercise between the Indian Army and Uzbekistan Army was held on February 20 last year at the Foreign Training Node, Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand.

India Expands Strategic Presence; to have Defence Attaches in more Countries in Africa, Asia

  • For the first time, India will post defence attaches in several countries including Ethiopia, Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Philippines, Armenia and Poland in line with its broader policy initiative to expand strategic ties with key regions, a move that came amid renewed geopolitical rivalries. New Delhi is also appointing a new defence attache to the tiny African nation of Djibouti that serves as a major maritime gateway around the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and is considered as a prized location for military bases.
  • The new defence attache in Djibouti will be the second one to hold the post in the island nation.
  • It is also learnt that New Delhi is planning to rationalise the strength of its teams of military officials in its embassy in Moscow and high commission in London.

World Quantum Day

  • World Quantum Day is an international, community-driven event on April 14 to spark interest and generate enthusiasm for quantum mechanics.
  • Quantum mechanics, the study of atoms and sub-atomic particles, has advanced to the point where it is now being applied to develop innovative technologies. Researchers worldwide have utilized the principles of quantum physics to create groundbreaking applications, such as LEDs, lasers, and ultra-precise atomic clocks used in the Global Positioning System. Attention is now focused on controlling and manipulating quantum systems for Quantum Computing, Quantum Communications, and Quantum Sensing applications, ushering in a new era of technological advancements.
  • World Quantum Day started on April 14, 2021 as an initiative by an international group of scientists.[4] The initiative was joined by engineers, educators, science communicators, organizations and others to celebrate the first World Quantum day on April 14, 2022.
