India Signs an Agreement to Acquire Five Lithium Mines in Argentina

  • The Centre signed an agreement to acquire five lithium brine blocks for exploration and development in Argentina. The agreement was signed between Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) and Catamarca Minera Y Energética Sociedad Del Estado (CAMYEN), a state-owned mining and energy company in the Argentine province of Catamarca.
  • This is the first ever lithium exploration and mining project by a state-owned company. KABIL will start exploration and development of five lithium brine blocks — Cortadera-I, Cortadera-VII, Cortadera-VIII, Cateo-2022-01810132 and Cortadera-VI — covering an area of about 15,703 hectares in the Catamarca province.

India Second-largest Recipient of Foreign Flows in 2023 after US

  • India was the second biggest recipients of global liquidity in 2023. Around $15 billion was deployed by global mutual funds into Indian equities (all into dedicated funds), according to a report by Elara Capital.
  • "In CY23- US, India and Japan were the biggest recipients of foreign flows. Outflows were seen across Europe. Barring India and US, foreign flows already turned weak for most countries in the second half of 2023," said Sunil Jain of Elara Capital.
  • The US, India, Japan and Hong Kong were the largest recipients of global flows in 2023. China came in at the fifth spot, followed by Brazil and Mexico.

Maharashtra's Pench Tiger Reserve Achieves Milestone as India's First Dark Sky Park

  • Pench Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra made history by securing recognition as India's inaugural Dark Sky Park, marking its position as the fifth in Asia. This prestigious acknowledgment underscores the reserve's unwavering commitment to protecting the sanctity of the night sky and creating an optimal setting for astronomy enthusiasts.
  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature, recognising the intrinsic value of the night sky as a natural, cultural, and historical resource, played a pivotal role in conferring this distinction. Prabhu Nath Shukla, the deputy director of the reserve, highlighted the significance of preserving natural darkness for nature conservation, maintaining ecological integrity, and contributing to the well-being of communities in urban centres.
  • The Reserve is located in the southern reaches of the Satpura Hills in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts in Madhya Pradesh and continues in Nagpur district in Maharashtra as a separate Sanctuary.
  • It is named after the Pench River, which flows from north to south through the Reserve.
  • It comprises of the Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park, the Pench Mowgli Sanctuary and a buffer.

  • Sindhu the team bronze-medallist at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, joined senior country-mate Anish Bhanwala in securing a Paris berth in the 25m rapid fire.
  • Anish had bagged the Olympic quota with a bronze medal in the Asian Championship in Changwon, Korea, in 2023.

  • Karnataka's batter Prakhar Chaturvedi broke the 25-year-old record of India's star batter Yuvraj Singh with an unbeaten 404 runs off 636 balls in the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy final. With a stunning knock, Prakhar Chaturvedi surpassed Yuvraj Singh's 1999 record of 358 runs for Punjab in a game against Bihar.

  • Malayalam music director K. J. Joy passed away in Chennai. He was 77 years old. Joy, is known as the first 'techno musician' in the Malayalam film music world for his use of instruments like the keyboard in the 1970s.
  • K. J. Joy, born in 1946 at Nellikunnu in Thrissur district of Kerala, composed music for more than two hundred films during his decades-long career in the film industry. He made his debut in Malayalam cinema in 1975 and since then he was the architect of many songs that captivated and enthralled people.

Defense Minister Sanctions Insurance Scheme for BRO Workers

  • India's Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, approved a groundbreaking scheme aimed at providing insurance cover to casual workers employed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). This move is designed to address the inherent risks associated with the challenging tasks these workers undertake in remote and hazardous areas. The scheme is expected to offer financial security and welfare to the families of casual paid labourers who play a crucial role in building infrastructure in the country's farthest frontiers.
  • The approved scheme is set to provide a significant INR 10 lakh ($13,500) to the families of casual paid labourers in the unfortunate event of their death.
  • BRO employs a substantial workforce, with up to one lakh casual workers contributing to infrastructure projects in border areas.

'Yuva Nidhi' Scheme For Jobless Youth in Shivamogga, Karnataka

  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar launched the Yuva Nidhi scheme, the fifth poll guarantee of the Congress for educated unemployed youth of Karnataka, in Shivamogga. Apart from their Cabinet colleagues, thousands of people and youth from Shivamogga and neighbouring districts turned up for the launch.
  • The scheme offers financial aid to graduates and diploma holders who are yet to get a job, but only for a maximum of two years. Training will be provided to the graduates and diploma holders who register themselves on the skill connect portal of the State Government.
  • The government had promised Rs. 3,000 per month to degree holders and Rs. 1,500 per month to diploma holders who were unable to get a job in the past six months and are not pursuing higher studies. The aid will be paid for two years.

  • The University Grants Commission invited Expression of Interest from authors, critics and faculty members of higher education institutes to write textbooks in 12 Indian languages for undergraduate-level courses in arts, science, commerce and social sciences.
  • The commission has invited applications for writing books in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
  • This effort is in tune with NEP 2020's goal to provide learning opportunities to students in universities in Indian languages.
