Indian Ocean Conference's 7th Edition Set for Perth

  • The 7th edition of the Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) is set to take place in Perth, Australia, from February 9-10, bringing together key stakeholders to deliberate on the theme 'Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean.'
  • Organised by the India Foundation in collaboration with India's Ministry of External Affairs, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies and the Perth USAsia Centre, the conference aims to chart a roadmap for strengthening regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
  • This annual event, inaugurated in Singapore in 2016, has become a flagship consultative forum for countries in the region. Over the years, the IOC has evolved into a vital platform, fostering dialogue and collaboration among ministers, political leaders, diplomats, strategic thinkers, academics, and media representatives.

Rural Development Ministry Signs Pact with SBI to Facilitate Loans for SHGs

  • The Rural Development Ministry and State Bank of India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to facilitate enterprise financing for rural self-help groups (SHG).
  • The MoU was signed by Additional Secretary Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission, Charanjit Singh and Chief General Manager, State Bank of India, Corporate office Mumbai, Shantanu Pendsey.
  • State Bank of India introduced a specialised financial product Svyam Siddha, exclusively tailored for SHG women entrepreneurs seeking loans up to Rs 5 lakhs. This initiative is designed to alleviate the challenges associated with extensive documentation requirements for bank loan applications and reduce the turnaround time (TAT).

DPIIT Organises Start-up India Innovation Week 2024

  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, organised the Start-up India Innovation Week 2024, spanning from January 10 to January 18. This week-long initiative seeks to unite start-ups, entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and stakeholders to celebrate and advance the Indian Start-up Ecosystem, culminating in the National Start-up Day on January 16, 2024.
  • Secretary of DPIIT, Rajesh Kumar Singh, delivered the inaugural address at the Start-up Seminar, themed 'Start-ups Unlocking Infinite Potential.'

Panjab University Alumnus Sheel Vardhan Singh is UPSC Member

  • Panjab University alumnus and former Director General (DG) of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Sheel Vardhan Singh was appointed member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) by President Droupadi Murmu.
  • His tenure will commence from the date he enters upon the office. The term of his appointment will be regulated in accordance with the provisions of the Article 316 (2) of the Constitution and the conditions of service will be governed by UPSC (Members) Regulations, 1969, as amended from time to time.

PM Modi Inaugurates Atal Setu

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the country's longest sea bridge. The 21.8-kilometre-long sea bridge, named the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri--Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, has been built at a cost of more than Rs. 17,840 crore.
  • The bridge, connecting South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai (between Sewri and Nhava Sheva), reduces from two-hour journey to just around 15-20 minutes.

Manish Prabhat Named As Next Ambassador of India to Denmark

  • Manish Prabhat (IFS:1996), currently serving as the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Uzbekistan, was named the next Ambassador of India to Denmark.
  • Prior to this, he headed the Eurasia Division in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.
  • Manish Prabhat is a career diplomat who has served in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi and in India's Missions abroad in Moscow, Yerevan, Washington D.C., Milan and Paris.
  • Ambassador Prabhat joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1996 and holds a Master's Degree in History from the University of Delhi. He speaks Hindi, English and Russian.

DRDO Conducts Successful Flight-test of New Generation AKASH Missile off Odisha Coast

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of the New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile.
  • The test was conducted from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, against a high-speed unmanned aerial target at very low altitude.
  • According to the Ministry of Defence, during the flight test, the target was successfully intercepted by the weapon system and destroyed.
  • It has validated the functioning of the complete weapon system consisting of the missile with an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker, launcher, multi-function radar and command, control and communication system.

Indore, Surat are Cleanest Cities in India

  • Indore and Surat were declared joint cleanest cities in India as part of the Swachh Survekshan Awards-2023 presented by President Droupadi Murmu. Indore won the award for the seventh straight time. Navi Mumbai retained the third position.
  • Chandigarh won the SafaiMitra Suraksha award for city with best safety standards for sanitation workers.

Tripura May Introduce Roman Script for Tribal Language Kokborok for CBSE Students

  • Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Saha, is considering a proposal to adopt the Roman script for Kokborok, a significant tribal language in the state. The move aims to address challenges faced by students in CBSE examinations.
  • Chief Minister Saha intends to write to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), urging permission for students to use the Roman script for Kokborok papers.
  • Kokborok, the mother tongue of many tribes in Tripura, lacks its own script.
  • Currently taught in Bengali script, this poses difficulties for students from English medium schools during CBSE examinations.

IIT Madras to Open New Campus at Kandy in Sri Lanka

  • Sri Lanka's Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that a new campus of IIT Madras would be started in Kandy in Sri Lanka.
  • The minister said that the proposal was part of the Budget 2024 presented by Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremasinghe in his capacity as Finance Minister. He added that he held discussions with Director and Deans of faculties at IIT Madras during his visit last month (December 2023).

Jaipur National University to Set up Campus in Dubai

  • Jaipur National University was granted permission by the Ministry of Education to establish an offshore campus in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
  • The proposal of Jaipur National University, for establishment of an off-shore campus in Dubai, United Arab Emirates was considered in this ministry as per the provisions of the UGC (Establishment of and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations, 2003.
  • The ministry directed the university to guarantee sufficient academic and physical infrastructure amenities for its offshore campus in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, by the norms and standards set forth by the UGC or any other relevant statutory/regulatory bodies.

  • Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, heading the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), launched an insightful book titled "Modi: Energising A Green Future". This book, a significant addition to environmental literature, is published by Pentagon Press in collaboration with the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation.

Indian Passport 80th Strongest

  • The Indian passport remained the 80th strongest in the world, the same as last year (2023), according to the 2024 Henley Passport Index. However, the Indian passport now gives its holders visa-free access to 62 countries as against 57 in the 2023 Henley Passport Index. Two years ago, India was at the 87th spot.
