Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey Assumes Charge of BIMSTEC Secretary General

  • Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, a senior diplomat of India, assumed charge of Secretary General (SG) of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) in Dhaka. Pandey, succeeded Tenzin Lekphell of Bhutan, is the 4th SG of BIMSTEC and will remain in office for a period of three years.
  • The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is an international organisation of seven South Asian and Southeast Asian nations.
  • The BIMSTEC member states are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
  • On June 6, 1997, a new sub-regional grouping was formed in Bangkok under the name BIST-EC (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand Economic Cooperation). Following the inclusion of Myanmar on December 22, 1997 during a special Ministerial Meeting in Bangkok, the Group was renamed 'BIMST-EC' (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand Economic Cooperation). In 1998, Nepal became an observer. In February 2004, Nepal and Bhutan became full members.

In a First, India to Chair, Host UNESCO World Heritage Committee

  • In a first, India is set to chair and host UNESCO's World Heritage Committee from July 21 to 31, 2024 in New Delhi, Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO, Vishal V. Sharma informed.
  • With New Delhi decided to be the epicenter of global discussions on heritage preservation, the opportunity will mark a momentous occasion for the India's cultural and historical legacy. Notably, this is the first time a country will lead and host the committee.
  • As per the official statement released by UNESCO, "At the 19th extraordinary session (UNESCO, 2023), the World Heritage Committee had decided that its 46th session will take place in India.
  • The UNESCO'S World Heritage Committee, which meets once a year, and consists of representatives from 21 member states plays an important role in bringing new additions to the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  • Established under the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO at its seventeenth session on November 16, 1972. The Rules of Procedure were last revised by the World Heritage Committee at its thirty-ninth session (Bonn, 2015). The Rules of Procedure are periodically revised to reflect the decisions of the World Heritage Committee.

French PM Elisabeth Borne Resigns

  • French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne resigned as President Emmanuel Macron prepared to unveil a long-awaited cabinet reshuffle in a bid to give new momentum to the final three years of his presidency.
  • She has served as Prime Minister since May 2022. She is a member of President Emmanuel Macron's party Renaissance. Borne is the second woman to hold the position of Prime Minister after Édith Cresson, who served from 1991 to 1992.
  • After days of intense behind-the-scenes manoeuvring, Education Minister Gabriel Attal was emerging as the favourite to succeed Borne.
  • If appointed, Gabriel Attal would be France's youngest ever and first openly gay Prime Minister.

Fino Payments Bank Applies for SFB License after Board's Agreement

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that Fino Payments Bank applied for a licence to become a Small Finance Bank (SFB).
  • According to the guidelines, payments banks were allowed to apply for a conversion into SFB post five years of operations along with meeting other guidelines mandated by the RBI. The bank must also have a minimum paid-up voting equity capital or net worth of Rs. 200 crore.

Indian Bank to Float Operations Support Subsidiary

  • Chennai-based Indian Bank plans to set up an operations support subsidiary to provide value-added services while optimising costs, especially for operations beyond large cities.
  • Two large public sector banks, State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda, have already formed such units for servicing customers in rural and semi-urban areas.
  • According to Indian Bank's Request for Proposal (RFP) to empanel manpower consultants for the subsidiary, the bank has received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • 'The proposed subsidiary would be providing services related to Business Correspondent Activities, Business Operations Activities, Customer Service and Grievance Handling, Call Centre operations and Support functions pertaining to IT, Vendor Management.

Klaasen Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

  • South Africa batter Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect but confirmed that he will be available for the Proteas in the white-ball formats.
  • Klaasen, a prolific performer for South Africa in the limited-overs format, played four Tests over his career. He debuted against India in Ranchi in 2019, and last featured against West Indies in 2023. The 'keeper-batter scored 104 runs at an average of 13 from his four games. His highest score was 35 against Australia in Sydney.

Varun, Esha Seal Paris Olympics Berth in Shooting

  • Young Indian shooters Varun Tomar and Esha Singh secured two Olympic quota places for the country with gold medals in the men's and women's 10m Air Pistol events of the Asian Qualifiers in Jakarta.
  • The duo's qualification took the total number of Indian shooters bound for Paris to 15, equalling the highest-ever tally that was achieved in the Tokyo Games.

Chennai Tops as Best City for Indian Women

  • Chennai is the safest Indian city for working women, thanks to concerted efforts of the government and local organisations.
  • The Top Cities for Women in India (TCWI) report by diversity consultancy firm Avtar Group came up with two lists of Indian cities based on population. On the list of cities that are home to over a million people each, Chennai is followed by Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai and Hyderabad, for building the most conducive environment for women's employment.
  • The study created a City Inclusion Score (CIS) for a list of predetermined cities. The CIS is a composite of three pillars: Social Inclusion Score (SIS), Industrial Inclusion Score (IIS), and Citizen Experience Score (CES).
  • The survey covered 113 cities in India to gauge their inclusivity and conduciveness to working women. The million-plus list had 49 cities, while the second list of cities with less than a million populace had 64 entries.
  • In the second category, Tiruchirappalli bagged the first spot, followed by Vellore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Shimla.

Union Health Minister Inaugurates Health Food Street 'Prasadam' In MP's Ujjain

  • Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the country's first 'Healthy and Hygienic Food Street', 'Prasadam', at Neelkanth Van, Mahakal Lok in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Prasadam will connect people in every corner of the country with pure and safe local and traditional food, Mandaviya said.
  • Spread over an area of 939 square metres with a total number of 19 shops, 'Prasadam' offers convenient and culturally rich dining options for the 1-1.5 lakh devotees who visit the Mahakaleshwar Temple daily.
  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, State and Minister of State for Public Health and Family Welfare Narendra Shivaji Patel attended the inauguration.

Regional Conference on E-governance Inaugurated in Guwahati

  • A two-day regional conference on e-governance was inaugurated in Guwahati.
  • Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria inaugurated the conference and Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh addressed the inaugural session.
  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), in collaboration with Government of Assam involving eight North Eastern states and four states of Eastern region, organised the two-day Conference on January 9-10, 2024. This is the 26th Regional Conference convened by DARPG during the period 2014-2024.
  • The main objective of the conference is to bring national and state level public administration organisations on the same platform to share experiences in innovations in public administration, transforming future public solution for improving quality of life, good governance, e-governance, digital governance, etc.

Indian Air Force C-130 J aircraft Carries Out Night Landing at Kargil Airstrip

  • The Indian Air Force successfully conducted a night landing of the C130-J transport aircraft at the Kargil airstrip. This marked the first time a night landing was carried out at the airstrip, situated near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Ladakh region.
  • The C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, manufactured by US aircraft maker Lockheed Martin, is an advanced tactical airlifter utilised by the Indian Air Force (IAF) for special operations and humanitarian crises. The night landing of the C130J is significant for the Air Force in many ways.

Four more NCC Units to be Raised in J&K, Ladakh

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved a proposal to raise four more units of the National Cadet Corps in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The approval includes "one mixed (boys and girls) army battalion each" at Udhampur and Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, and at Kargil in Ladakh, and one air squadron at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, the defence ministry said.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Day

  • Every year on January 9, India celebrates Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, also known as NRI Day, to recognise and honour the invaluable contributions of the Indian diaspora around the world.
  • The day holds historical significance as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915. Gandhi, himself a Pravasi Bharatiya, led the Indian independence movement upon his return, inspiring countless others to fight for their homeland's freedom.
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Diva was first celebrated in 2003. It was an annual event earlier, but in 2015, the government revised its format to celebrate PBD once every two years. To date, 17 conventions have been held.

Shrikant Shinde, Sukanta Majumdar among 5 MPs Selected for Sansad Ratna Awards

  • Five Lok Sabha members, including the BJP's Sukanta Majumdar and Shiv Sena's Shrikant Eknath Shinde, were selected for the Sansad Ratna Awards this year, its organisers announced.
  • The BJP's Sudheer Gupta, NCP's Amol Ramsing Kolhe and Congress' Kuldeep Rai Sharma are the other three MPs selected for the awards to be presented at a function in the national capital on February 17, 2024.
  • The Sansad Ratna Awards are presented annually to the top-performing parliamentarians based on their performance, while the Sansad Maha Ratna Awards are presented once in five years for consistency in performance during the term of the Lok Sabha.
  • Chennai-based non-profit charitable trust Prime Point Foundation instituted these honours at the instance of former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam, who himself inaugurated the first award event in 2010 in Chennai.
