Pakistan Applies for BRICS Membership

  • Pakistan formally applied for membership in the multinational forum BRICS.
  • Islamabad filed the application to join the body and has sought Russia's support, quoted Pakistan's envoy to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali.
  • Pakistan is looking forward to joining the group of developing nations under Russia's presidency in 2024.
  • The bloc currently includes China, the world's second-largest economy, as well as Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa. Six new members --Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates-- will be added to the bloc in January 2024. Pakistan is hopeful about joining BRICS with these countries.

Afghanistan Announces Permanent Closure of Indian Embassy

  • In a major development, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan announced its permanent closure in New Delhi citing persistent challenges from the Indian government.
  • The decision follows the embassy's earlier cessation of operations on September 30, a move made in the hope that the Indian government's stance would evolve favourably for the normal continuation of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in New Delhi.
  • The embassy said despite an eight-week wait, the objectives of visa extension for diplomats and a shift in the Indian government's conduct were not realised.

UAE Inaugurates World's Largest Single-site Solar Power Plant ahead of COP28

  • The United Arab Emirates inaugurated the world's largest single-site solar power plant ahead of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28). The 2-gigawatt Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic Independent Power Project (IPP) is located 35 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city and will generate enough electricity to power almost 200,000 homes. The plant is expected to displace 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
  • The project was inaugurated by Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi in the presence of Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.

SEBI Chairperson Launches IRRA Platform to Enhance Investor Risk Reduction

  • Madhabi Puri Buch, the Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), officially launched the Investor Risk Reduction Access (IRRA) platform at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Developed under the guidance of Market Infrastructure Institutions (MIIs) overseen by SEBI, the IRRA platform is designed to mitigate risks faced by investors during technical glitches at Trading Member (TM) ends, encompassing both primary and disaster recovery sites.
  • The platform is tailored for trading members supporting Internet-based trading (IBT) and Security Trading through Wireless Technology (STWT) for their investors.
  • Notably, IRRA is not available for algo trading and institutional clients.

DGCA Slaps Rs. 10 Lakh Penalty on Air India for Not Compensating Passengers

  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposed a Rs. 10 lakh penalty on Air India for its failure to compensate passengers affected by delayed flights and unserviceable seats. The fine was also imposed for not training its ground personnel in accordance with regulations.
  • The regulator stated that it conducted inspections of all domestic airlines' operations at airports in Delhi, Kochi, and Bengaluru in May and September to verify their compliance with obligations regarding facilities/compensation for affected passengers as outlined in DGCA regulations.

  • Aligned with India's National Geospatial Policy 2022, which emphasises self-reliance in geospatial data production and usage, the partnership aims to create digital twins of major cities and towns.
  • The collaboration introduces the India Map Stack initiative, a fusion of Genesys' mapping expertise and SOI's technical infrastructure.
  • This initiative will provide previously unavailable data layers, including high-precision 3D data, digital terrain models (DTMs), digital surface models (DSMs), and orthoimagery.

  • Filmmaker and actor Armaan Kohli's father Rajkumar Kohli died at the age of 93.
  • Born in 1930, Rajkumar Kohli was famous for directing several Bollywood films such as the 1966 movie 'Dulla Bhatti' and the 1970s film 'Lootera' starring Dara Singh. Other notable films included Reena Roy-Sunil Dutt's 'Nagin' (1976), 'Jaani Dushman' (1979), 'Badle Ki Aag', 'Naukar Biwi Ka' and 'Raaj Tilak' (1984). His films frequently featured actors like Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha and actresses Reena Roy and Anita Raj.

Lachit Diwas

  • Lachit Diwas (Lachit Day) is a regional public holiday in the Indian state of Assam, observed on November 24 each year.
  • On this holiday, the Assamese government celebrates the birth anniversary of the legendary Ahom army General Lachit Borphukan.
  • In the 17th century, the Mughal Empire was dominant across large swathes of the Indian subcontinent. Stretching from the Deccan plateau in South India to Afghanistan and Kashmir in the north, the empire also had designs on Assam which was part of the Ahom Kingdom.
  • Chao Lachit was an army general (Borphukan) from Assam who fought relentlessly to curb the expansion of the Mughal Empire in Assam and had reversed Mughal territorial gains in the region.
  • Lachit was the commander at the Battle of Saraighat which was fought in 1671 between the Mughals and the Ahom Kingdom on the Brahmaputra river at Saraighat, now in Guwahati.

Bar Council of Delhi Introduces online Verification of Lawyers' Certificate of Practice

  • The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) implemented a digital verification form aimed at enhancing the efficiency of verifying lawyers' certificates of practice through online channels.
  • According to a recent notification from the BCD, advocates registered from January 1, 1990, onwards must complete the digital verification form, known as FORM-A, as mandated. The notice further specifies that advocates who enrolled before January 1, 1990, are exempt from filling out Form-A and are instead required to complete a declaration form, as Form-A does not apply to them.
