North Korea Puts its First Spy Satellite into Orbit

  • North Korea said that it had put its first spy satellite into orbit and vowed further launches to defend against what it called its enemies' dangerous military maneuvers'.
  • The satellite, named 'Malligyong-1', was launched on a new carrier rocket, 'Chollima-1'.
  • Neither South Korea, the United States nor Japan, all of which are experiencing increasing military tensions with North Korea, could confirm the satellite had made it into orbit.
  • But South Korea called the launch a clear violation of a UN Security Council resolution that prohibits North Korea from using ballistic missile technology.

Vinay M. Tonse New Managing Director of State Bank of India

  • The government appointed Vinay M. Tonse, the Deputy Managing Director of India's largest public lender State Bank of India (SBI) as its Managing Director (MD).
  • The tenure of the new MD is till November, 2025.
  • The development comes after Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) in September recommended the name of Vinay M. Tonse as Managing Director of SBI.
  • The post fell vacant after the appointment of Swaminathan Janakiraman as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

Zubin Saxena Succeeds Navjit Ahluwalia as Hilton's Senior VP, Country Head

  • Hilton announced the appointment of Zubin Saxena as senior vice-president and country head in India, who will take charge in January 2024. He took over the position from Navjit Ahluwalia, who left Hilton after six years.
  • Saxena has been working at the Radisson Hotel Group for over eight years, as the Managing Director and area senior vice-president of South Asia. In his 24-year career in hospitality, Saxena has worked at IHG as director of development for South Asia, and senior advisory roles with Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels in India and HVS in New York. Saxena has an MBA from the Adam Smith School of Business, Glasgow.
  • Saxena will oversee 25 trading hotels of Hilton in India, and will lead the company's expansion in South Asia with 20 properties in the development pipeline.

The 7th Edition of Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS)

  • The 7th edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit was held from November 21 - 22, 2023 at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan and Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium.
  • Leaders from the business world from more than 25 countries and host of prominent business leaders from India as well participated in the seventh edition of the Summit.
  • Bengal accounts for 12% of the country's leather and 10% of iron and steel exports.
  • MSMEs form the vital base of the industrial pyramid and the state has the country's second highest number of MSMEs (about 90 lakh units), which accounts for 14% of India's MSMEs.

Shooting World Cup: Divya Finishes 7th, Esha 13th in 10m Air Pistol Final

  • India's Divya T.S. finished 7th and Esha Singh 13th in the women's 10m air pistol final during the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup final at Lusail Shooting range in Doha.
  • In men's air pistol, the lone Indian entrant, Sarabjot Singh shot 581 and missed the final by one point.
  • All three podium spots were taken by athletes hailing from China. Li Xue won the gold medal, Zhao Nan clinched silver while the reigning world champions Jiang Ranxin took bronze.

Sri Lanka Loses Hosting Rights for 2024 U-19 World Cup

  • Sri Lanka cricket was handed a major jolt after the International Cricket Council (ICC) stripped it of the rights to host the U-19 World Cup in 2024. Already under the scanner after being sanctioned by the ICC for government involvement in the board operations, this is a major setback for the board. However, in some relief, they will still continue to participate in the ICC tournaments and also play scheduled bilateral series.
  • The ICC moved the men's U-19 World Cup 2024 from Sri Lanka to South Africa, 11 days after the world governing body provisionally suspended the island nation's cricket board due to government interference.

ICC Approves Changes to Pitch and Outfield Monitoring; Start Stop Clock Trial

  • The International Cricket Council, which is the global governing body of cricket, has decided to implement a new rule to regulate the time taken between overs in men's ODI and T20I cricket. According to the new rule, a five-run penalty will be imposed the third time a bowling team fails to be ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of completing the previous one. The match officials will have a stop-clock to check the time taken between overs.
  • The new rule will be in force from December 2023 to April 2024 on a trial basis. "This move is part of a broader effort to improve the pace of the game and enhance the spectator experience.

India, Australia Discuss Defence Ties at 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue

  • India and Australia held 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue to step up defence cooperation and deepen the strategic relationship in sectors such as critical minerals and trade and investment.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong as part of the second India-Australia 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue.
  • The ministers exchanged views on deepening multifaceted India-Australia ties, including in areas of defence and security, trade & investment, critical minerals, energy, climate change, S&T, space, education and people to people linkages.

Centre Allocates Rs. 1,100 crore for Inland Waterways and Ayush Projects

  • In a significant move to enhance connectivity and infrastructure in the Northeast region, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced a substantial grant of over Rs. 1,100 crore for the development of 25 inland waterways projects. The focus is on expediting crucial projects and ensuring their completion by January 2024.
  • Out of the allocated funds, Rs. 850 crore was earmarked for Assam alone, supporting 15 key inland waterways projects. Minister Sonowal emphasised the importance of these projects for the state's development.
  • In addition to the inland waterways projects, Minister Sonowal shed light on the initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Ayush in the Northeast region.

Ghol Fish is State Fish of Gujarat

  • Ghol fish was declared the state fish of Gujarat by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during a two-day Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad. The event was attended by several dignitaries.
  • Ghol fish is one of the largest fish found in India. The fish is found in the marine areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra in a golden-brown colour.
  • The fish is valuable and is in demand because of its meat and air bladder. Ghol fish is used to make beer and wine and its air bladder is used in pharmaceuticals.

Russia Holds Naval Drills with India in Bay of Bengal

  • Russia held joint naval exercises with India in the Bay of Bengal, as the two countries bolster security ties despite Moscow's offensive in Ukraine.
  • The United States has in the past voiced concern about India holding joint drills with Russia, which has been trying to expand its influence in the region.
  • The purpose of the exercise was to comprehensively develop and strengthen naval cooperation between Russia and India.
  • The drills helped the two navies jointly counter global threats and ensure the safety of civilian shipping in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • The drills involved ships from Russia's Pacific Fleet, including the Admiral Tributs anti-submarine destroyer.

India-US Joint Drill Begins in Meghalaya

  • The 14th edition of Indo-US Joint Special Forces' exercise 'Vajra Prahar 2023' commenced at Umroi, Meghalaya. The US contingent is represented by personnel from the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) of the US Special Forces. The Indian Army contingent is led by Special Forces personnel from the Eastern Command.
  • The three-week exercise aims at sharing best practices and experiences in areas such as joint mission planning and operational tactics.
  • Both sides will jointly plan and rehearse a series of special, counter-terrorist and air-borne operations in simulated conventional and unconventional scenarios in the mountainous terrain.

  • Dr. Badrinath's contributions to the field of medicine were widely recognized. He received the Padma Sri award in 1983, the Padma Bhushan in 1999, and the Bidhan Chandra Roy Award in 1991.
