Javier Milei Wins Argentina's Presidency

  • Argentina elected right-wing libertarian Javier Milei as its new President, rolling the dice on an outsider with radical views to fix an economy battered by triple-digit inflation, a looming recession and rising poverty.
  • Milei won by a wider-than-expected margin. He landed some 56% of the vote versus just over 44% for his rival, Peronist Economy Minister Sergio Massa, who conceded.
  • Milei's victory marks an extraordinary rise for the former TV pundit, who entered the race as a political outsider on a promise to "break up with the status quo" – exemplified by Sergio Massa.

Finland Blocks Border Crossings to Stop Migrants it Says Were Sent by Russia

  • Finland closed four crossings on its border with Russia, in a bid to stem an increase in migrants that Helsinki says has been orchestrated by Moscow.
  • Finland has accused Russian authorities of funnelling migrants to the crossings in retaliation for its decision to increase defence cooperation with the United States, an assertion dismissed by the Kremlin.
  • Barriers will go up at four of the nine crossings with Russia, at Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra and Niirala in its southeast, as per the Finnish Border Guard.

Bangladesh Top Court Upholds Ban on Largest Islamist Party

  • Bangladesh's highest court dismissed an appeal by the country's largest Islamist party seeking to overturn a 2013 ruling that barred it from participating in elections for violating the constitutional provision of secularism Bangladesh is set to hold its next national elections on January 7.
  • A five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan handed out the ruling. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's main lawyer did not appear before the court due to personal problems and his petition, filed previously, seeking to postpone the hearing for six weeks was also rejected.
  • The High Court's decision 10 years ago cancelled the party's registration with the Election Commission, thus stopping it from participating in elections or using party symbols. But it did not ban it from political participation.

RBI Permits Banks to Open Current Accounts for Export Proceeds

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) permitted banks to open additional current accounts for export proceeds in addition to special rupee vostro accounts with a view to providing greater operational flexibility to exporters.
  • To provide greater operational flexibility to exporters, banks maintaining special rupee vostro accounts as per the provisions of the RBI circular dated July 11, 2022 are permitted to open an additional special current account for their exporter constituents exclusively for the settlement of their export transactions.

Bengaluru Tops in Women-Led Start-ups

  • India's start-up landscape witnessed remarkable growth, emerging as the third-largest hub in the world, following the United States and China. Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, topped the list of women-led start-ups, boasting 1,783 women-led start-ups, leading the charge for gender diversity in entrepreneurship. Despite the overall success of the start-up ecosystem, the gender gap remains a significant challenge.
  • According to the data of Traxon, Bengaluru is at the forefront of women-led start-ups, with 1,783 ventures, followed by Mumbai (1,480) and Delhi (1,195). Noida, Kolkata and Ahmedabad also make notable contributions, ranking eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively, showcasing the geographic distribution of women entrepreneurs in India.

Australia Wins the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

  • ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia lifted the world cup trophy by defeating India with a convincing 6-wicket margin. Australia reached the target in 42.5 overs with six wickets in hand.
  • With this win Australia has won the World Cup title 6 times viz. 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023.
  • Australia's Travis Head was declared the Player of the Match in his side's 2023 ODI World Cup final win against India in Ahmedabad. The Australian opener was the top-scorer for his side in a 241-run chase, with a 120-ball 137.

Novak Djokovic Claims Seventh ATP Finals Crown

  • Novak Djokovic claimed yet another record with his seventh ATP Finals title, sweeping aside local hero Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-3 in Turin, Italy and leaving tennis fans wondering when he will relinquish his tennis dominance. Djokovic came into the final at the end of an age-defying year which has brought three Grand Slams, taking his total to an all-time best of 24, and a 40th Masters 1000 title.

Virat Kohli Adjudged Player of the Tournament

  • Virat Kohli was adjudged player of the tournament after Australia beat India in the ICC ODI World Cup final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
  • Kohli scored 765 runs in 11 innings including three centuries and six fifties. He averaged 95.62 and scored runs at a strike rate of 90.31.

IAF's First Bomber Unit and the First to Use Jet Aircraft in Combat Marks 75 Years

  • The first bomber unit to be raised by the Indian Air Force (IAF) is the No. 5 Squadron, the Tuskers. It commemorated its 75th anniversary at its home base in Ambala. It is also the first IAF unit to use jet aircraft in combat.
  • A series of events, including a ceremonial parade, home-paying to martyrs, aerobatic performance by the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team, skydiving by the Akash Ganga Team, and flypast by Rafale and Jaguar fighters were organised to mark the milestone.
  • The Squadron was raised as part of the erstwhile Royal Indian Air Force in November 1948 at Kanpur on B-24 Liberator propeller-driven heavy bombers under the command of Wing Commander (Wg Cdr) JRS 'Danny' Dantra.

  • Indian Navy Ship (INS) Sharda is on a visit to Port Antsiranana, Madagascar, from November 17-23 as part of an ongoing operational deployment.

Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palcios Crowned Miss Universe 2023

  • Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palacios was crowned Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd edition of the pageant, held this year in El Salvador.
  • Palacios received the crown and sash from her predecessor, R'Bonney Gabriel from the United States.
  • This is the first time a contestant from Nicaragua has won the contest, with Thailand's Anntonia Porsild and Australia's Moraya Wilson rounding out the top three.

Former RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan Passes Away

  • S. Venkitaramanan, the 18th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, passed away in Chennai at the age of 92. He held the position from December 1990 to December 1992. Before his tenure as RBI Governor, Venkitaramanan served as the finance secretary in the Ministry of Finance from 1985 to 1989 and was also advisor to the government of Karnataka.

Universal Children's Day

  • Universal Children's Day, also known as World Children's Day, is celebrated on November 20.
  • This significant occasion marks the anniversary of two landmark documents that enshrined the fundamental rights of children globally – the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified in 1989.
  • The idea of a World Children's Day was first proposed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 1925. The ILO was concerned about the plight of children who were being forced into labour and were not receiving an education.
  • In 1954, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming Universal Children's Day. The date of November 20th was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
  • The theme for World Children's Day 2023 is 'For Every Child, Every Right!'

Tamil Writer Perumal Murugan Wins 2023 JCB Literary Prize

  • Tamil writer Perumal Murugan's novel 'Fire Bird', translated into English by Janani Kannan, won the 2023 JCB Prize for Literature. The book was published by Penguin Random House India. As neither Murugan nor Kannan were present at the award ceremony, publisher and author Manasi Subramaniam received the prize on their behalf.
  • JCB Prize for Literature is an Indian literary award established in 2018. It is awarded annually to a distinguished work of fiction by an Indian writer working in English or translated fiction by an Indian writer.

Amazon India, AICTE Join for Skill Development of Women Tech Students

  • Amazon India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to extend its initiative, Amazon WoW (Women of the World). This programme is designed to empower and equip women students enrolled in engineering colleges across India with essential skills to thrive in the technology industry.
  • This programme is open to any women student who is currently pursuing a four-year BTech/BE or two-year MCA, M.Tech/ME programme or five year dual degree.
  • The programme offers workshops on coding, problem-solving, tech interviews, and data structures and algorithms, equipping female students in their application and selection processes. Through Amazon WoW, over 900 women have secured internships or full-time opportunities at Amazon.

Manipur Government to Publish Constitution of India in Manipuri Meetei Mayek Script

  • The Chief Minister of the Manipur N. Biren Singh announced that it will be publishing a bilingual edition of the Constitution of India in English and Manipuri and that the said edition will have the Meetei Mayek script.
  • The move is meant to promote the Manipuri script and give speakers of the Manipuri language a door into the Indian Constitution.
  • The document in this edition will undoubtedly become an invaluable asset for the entire state, and its publication will mark a significant milestone in the history of Manipur.
