Spain's Pedro Sánchez Re-elected Prime Minister

  • Spain's acting Socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, was chosen by a majority of legislators to form a new government in a parliamentary vote.
  • Sánchez was backed by 179 lawmakers in the 350-seat Lower House of parliament. Only right-wing opposition deputies voted against him.
  • The vote came after nearly two days of debate among party leaders that centered almost entirely on a highly controversial amnesty deal for Catalonia's separatists that Mr. Sánchez agreed to in return for vital support to get elected prime minister again.
  • Sánchez won the vote after clinching the support of six smaller parties, allowing him to achieve the majority lawmakers needed to be re-elected and form another minority coalition government with the left-wing Sumar (Joining Forces) party.

US and China Agree to Resume Military-to-military Communications

  • US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to resume high-level military-to-military communication and counter-narcotics cooperation as they met in a bid to establish a working relationship amidst Beijing's aggressive actions in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • The two leaders also affirmed the need to address the risks of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems and improve AI safety through US-China government talks during their meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco.

Microsoft Renames Bing Chat as Copilot

  • Microsoft announced that the company's AI-powered Bing Chat and Bing Chat for Enterprise was renamed as 'Copilot' at the Ignite developers conference. In addition to the name change, the American technology giant said that the Copilot experience will also be available on a standalone web page similar to ChatGPT. Users will still be able to access the chatbot from Bing and Windows. However, the site will make it more accessible as it can be accessed from any browser, not just through Bing.

AIFF-FIFA Academy to be Launched in Bhubaneswar

The AIFF-FIFA academy, to be launched under the FIFA Talent Development Scheme, will be inaugurated by Arsene Wenger, the Chief of Global Football Development, FIFA.
  • The FIFA TDS is a programme aimed at collaborating with different Member Associations across the world to increase the competitiveness of their national teams. Amazon Prime Video Launches its First Dedicated Sports Channel - FanCode

  • The Ministry of Railways is participating in the 42nd India International Trade Fair (IITF) – 2023 being held from November 14 to 27, 2023 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Under the guidance of Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology, the Ministry set up a pavilion in Hall no. 5 with the theme of 'Changing India's Infrastructure'. Lawyer V. Lakshmikumaran among Four Distinguished Fellows Appointed by NITI Aayog

  • The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog appointed V. Lakshmikumaran, the Founder and Managing Partner of Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, as one of four distinguished fellows for a one-year term.
  • V. Lakshmikumaran, a legal expert with 35 years of experience, specialises in advising companies on various aspects of taxation, including International Taxation, Transfer Pricing, GST, Customs, Excise, Service Tax, VAT, Foreign Trade Policy, and Special Economic Zones.
  • His areas of work include legal advice to international clients on anti-dumping duties, subsidies, and trade investigations.
  • The other distinguished individuals who joined the ranks of NITI Aayog are:
  • Prof (Dr) Anoop Singh a member of the fifteenth Finance Commission. He has earlier served as a part of the International Monetary Fund, including as the Director of the Asia Pacific Department and as a Special Adviser to the Governors of the Reserve Bank of India.
  • O. P. Agarwal, a 1979 batch IAS officer, has earlier been involved in the framing of the national urban transport policy. With a background in Transport Economics (PhD from IIT Delhi), he spent six years as the World Bank's global Urban Transport Adviser.
  • Ajai Chowdhry, a co-founder of HCL, is credited as having played a key role in India's electronics industry. His contributions include chairing a task force in 2009 for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, shaping the Electronics Policy.

Fourth Anti-submarine Waterfare Craft Launched by GRSE

  • Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd launched the fourth Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), barely five months after the launch of the third ship.
  • GRSE is building eight such ASW SWCs for the Indian Navy. The warship 'INS Amini' was launched by Manju Naithani, wife of Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy, who was the chief guest at the event.

India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise 'Mitra Shakti'

  • The ninth edition of joint military exercise 'Mitra Shakti-2023' between India and Sri Lanka is being held in Aundh (Pune). The exercise is being conducted will conclude on November 29, 2023. The Indian contingent, of 120 personnel, is being represented mainly by troops from the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment. The Sri Lankan side is being represented by personnel from 53 Infantry Division. Fifteen personnel from Indian Air Force and five personnel from Sri Lankan Air Force are also participating in the exercise.
  • The aim of the exercise is to jointly rehearse conduct of Sub Conventional operations under Chapter VII of United Nations Charter. The Scope of the exercise includes synergising joint responses during counter-terrorist operations. Both sides will practice tactical actions such as raid, search and destroy missions, heliborne operations, etc. In addition, Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting and Yoga will also form part of the exercise curriculum.

Freedom Fighter and Communist Leader N. Sankaraiah Passed Away

  • N. Sankaraiah, a freedom fighter, founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and one of the tallest leaders of the Left movement in the country, died at the age of 102.
  • Sankaraiah's journey as a revolutionary began at the American College in Madurai. His father wanted him to become a lawyer but his participation in the freedom struggle led to his arrest, days before his final examinations. He spent a total of eight years in prison, both before and after Independence, a time that shaped his belief in communism and social justice.
  • Sankaraiah was honoured with the prestigious 'Thagaisal Thamizhar' Award by the DMK government in 2021. He donated the prize money from the award for Covid-19 relief.

  • International Students' Day is celebrated on November 17, the anniversary of the Nazi invasion of a university in Prague in 1939.   • The Odisha government launched a scheme for helping the brain development of children in the first 1000 days of their lives through various means, including engaging them with toys made by their parents.
  • The programme 'Ama Kunipila' (our kids) was formulated by the Women and Child Development (WCD) department. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that children are the strength of the country. ''If children are provided with the right education, healthcare and environment from infancy, they can become great citizens.
  • 'Ama Kunipila' is a campaign to institutionalise home-based care of children less than three years of age through parent-led stimulation programmes for their brain development.

Mohan Katarki, Senior Advocate Joins International Law Association's Sea Protection Committee

  • Mohan Katarki, Senior Advocate, was inducted as a member of the Committee on Protection of People at Sea by the Executive Council of the International Law Association.
  • Katarki is a Senior Advocate designated by the Supreme Court of India. He is the Honorary Visiting Professor of Law at Bangalore University's Law College, and is a well known expert in trans boundary water law on sharing of federal and international river water resources.
  • The International Law Association comprises lawyers, judges and law professors, and plays a pioneering role in the development of international law.
