Dominica to Create World's First Sperm Whale Reserve

  • Dominica is set to create the world's first sperm whale reserve, designating a swath of ocean where large ships and commercial fishing are restricted and visitors can swim alongside the gentle marine giants.
  • The Caribbean nation hoped the new protected zone of 300 square miles (nearly 800 square kilometres) off its western coast, roughly the size of the island itself, would boost valuable tourism revenue but also help sequester more carbon in the deep sea, an often overlooked benefit of whale conservation.
  • Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on Earth, living in matrilineal societies with distinct cultures and dialects.

India Inks IPEF Pact on Supply Chains in Bid to Reduce Reliance on China

  • India and 13 other members of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) signed a supply chain resilience agreement that will provide benefits like potential shifting of production centres in critical sectors and mitigating risks of economic disruptions from supply chain shocks.
  • The agreement was signed in San Francisco, where the IPEF was held along with the much larger Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. India was represented by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal at the IPEF.
  • India joined the US and 12 other IPEF partners to ink the IPEF supply chain resilience agreement, a first-of-its-kind international pact that fortifies and strengthens global supply chains and foster adaptability, stability and sustainability.

Virat Kohli Breaks Sachin Tendulkar's Record for Most Centuries in an ODI

  • In a historic moment at the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, Virat Kohli, the former Indian cricket captain, achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first batter in the world to score 50 One Day International (ODI) centuries. In doing so, he surpassed the iconic Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 centuries, solidifying his place as the leading century-scorer in ODI cricket.
  • The former Indian cricket team captain slammed his 50th ODI ton against New Zealand during the Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
  • That was not all as Kohli also claimed another World Cup record that previously belonged to Tendulkar. He also became the batter with most runs in a single edition of the Cricket World Cup. 674 - Virat Kohli (2023), 673 - Sachin Tendulkar (2003).

  • The Indian team won by 70 runs in the match against New Zealand. This was India's tenth successive win and progressed to the final of the 2023 World Cup. India finished on 397-4 (50 Overs) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Mohammed Shami took seven wickets as New Zealand was all out for 327 runs. He became the first bowler to take a seven-wicket haul in an ODI World Cup knockout game He also became the first bowler to pick three five-wicket hauls in one World Cup edition. India beat New Zealand for 1st time in ODI World Cup knockouts. New Zealand, who beat India at the same stage in the 2019 tournament, were bundled out for 327 in the 49th over with Daryl Mitchell's excellent innings of 134 proving to be in vain.

PCB Appoints Shaheen Afridi as T20I Skipper

  • Pakistan Cricket Board named Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new white-ball captain, while Shan Masood will lead the men in green in Test matches. The appointment by the PCB came after Babar Azam stepped down as Pakistan captain in all three formats.
  • Masood has played 30 Tests for Pakistan, scoring 1597 runs at an average of 28.52 with a highest score of 156. Afridi, meanwhile, has taken 104 and 64 wickets respectively in the 53 ODIs and 52 T20s he has played to date.

  • The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) and Lean Campus Startups (Trust) & WEICI India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Manesar, Gurugram. The signatories to the MoU were Lata Suresh, representing IICA, and Umesh Rathod, representing Lean Campus Startups (Founder).
  • The collaborative objective of IICA and Lean Campus Startups & WEICI India is to empower both corporate and women entrepreneurs, augmenting their knowledge, skills, and competencies in the effective establishment and management of a diverse workforce. In partnership with IICA, LCS will orchestrate programmes for women entrepreneurs and students.

Tamil Nadu Governor Returns 10 Bills, Week After Court Expressed Concerns

  • Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi returned ten pending bills, two of which were passed by the earlier AIADMK government, to the Assembly.
  • Ravi's action came days after the Supreme Court had come down hard on him and his Punjab counterpart, as it heard complaints by the two state governments about delays in clearing bills.
  • The Tamil Nadu government has accused the BJP-appointed Governor of deliberately delaying the bills' clearance and scuttling the state's development by undermining the elected administration.

North Sikkim Connectivity Fully Restored after Chungthang Bailey Bridge Launch

  • The Indian Army troops of Trishakti Corps, in collaboration with the Border Roads Organization (BRO), successfully completed the construction of a Bailey Bridge over the Teesta River at Chungthang in North Sikkim. This crucial infrastructure was washed away after a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in the Lhonak Lake upstream, severing the connection between North Sikkim and the mainland in October 2023.
  • The bridge, which serves as the life line for Lachen and Lachung Valley in North Sikkim, will now pave the way for seamless movement of vehicles and provision of relief material to these flood affected areas.

Russia Seals Deal to Supply Igla Anti-aircraft Missiles to India

  • In a major development, India and Russia signed a contract to supply Igla-S hand-held anti-aircraft missiles to India, nearly eight months after Moscow officials anticipated that a key contract on the supply and licensed production of Igla-S man-portable air defense systems in India will be inked.
  • The Igla-S is a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) that can be fired by an individual or crew to bring down an enemy aircraft.

  • Shital Mahajan, a well-known Indian skydiver, achieved a new feat by becoming the first woman in the world to jump off a helicopter from the height of 21,500 ft in front of Mt Everest. Mahajan a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award Padma Shri and a holder of several skydiving records, completed skydiving in the front side of Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world.

International Day for Tolerance

  • International Day of Tolerance is observed annually on November 16 with the primary aim of promoting mutual understanding and respect among all the diverse cultures and communities across the globe.
  • International Day for Tolerance was initially established by the United Nations in 1996 to promote understanding among cultures and foster respect for diversity. This day is observed in commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance by UNESCO member states on November 16, 1995. The declaration highlights that tolerance is important for peace and progress, encouraging societies to recognise the importance of mutual respect and dialogue. It also seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of intolerance and promote education as a means to prevent prejudice and discrimination.

National Press Day

  • National Press Day is observed on November 16, every year, in India to celebrate the importance of a free and responsible press in a democratic society. The day is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India (PCI) in 1966, which acts as a regulatory body for the news media in the country.
  • The theme for National Press Day 2023 is 'Media in the Era of Artificial Intelligence'.

Jharkhand Foundation Day

  • Jharkhand is the 28th state of India. It was formed on November 15, 2000 after a long-standing tribal movement for statehood. Jharkhand was earlier a part of Bihar, more precisely it was then South Bihar. November 15 is the birth anniversary of tribal leader Birsa Munda who was a part of the tribal movement against the British in the 1870s. He was arrested by the British when he got highly involved in the movement and died in a Ranchi jail at the young age of 25 in 1900. President Droupadi Murmu took part in the state's foundation day celebrations this year (2023) at Morhabadi ground and also visited the birthplace of Munda in Ulihatu village in Khunti district.

Winners of Infosys Prize 2023

  • Historian Jahnavi Phalkey was announced as the winner of the Infosys Prize 2023 in Humanities. Phalkey was awarded for her brilliant and granular insights into the individual, institutional, and material histories of scientific research in modern India.
  • Karuna Mantena was awarded the Infosys Prize 2023 in Social Sciences for her research on "the theory of imperial rule, and the claim that this late imperial ideology became one of the important factors in the emergence of modern social theory.
  • Professor Sachchida Nand Tripathi, from IIT, Kanpur, was given the Infosys Prize 2023 for pioneering a large-scale sensor-based air quality network, mobile laboratories, and AI+ML-driven data analysis.
  • Professor Mukund Thattai from the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, was declared the winner of the Infosys Prize 2023 in Physical Sciences for his contributions to evolutionary cell biology.
  • The Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) selects the winners of the Infosys Prize in six categories: engineering and computer science, humanities, life sciences, mathematical sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences. Each category's prize comprises a gold medal, a citation, and a prize purse of $100,000 (or its equivalent in rupees).

Salman Rushdie Honoured With First 'Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award'

  • World-renowned author Salman Rushdie was awarded the first-ever 'Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award' by the Vaclav Havel Centre.
  • The 'Disturbing the Peace Award to a Courageous Writer at Risk' was conferred upon Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah. Despite being imprisoned, Abdel-Fattah remains a symbol of resistance against Egypt's authoritarian regime.

PM Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups Development Mission

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a Rs. 24,000-crore project for vulnerable tribal groups on the birth anniversary of tribal icon Birsa Munda from Jharkhand's Khunti district. The PM Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan is meant to ensure last-mile welfare scheme delivery and protection for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
  • The Rs. 24,000-crore project is aimed at the development of the PVTGs. As part of the mission, basic facilities such as road and telecom connectivity, electricity, safe housing, clean drinking water and sanitation, improved access to education, health and nutrition and sustainable livelihood opportunities will be provided to areas where these tribal groups live as these are mostly remote, scattered and inaccessible.

NCERT to Change Classes 6 to 12 Social Science Syllabus

  • India's National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) initiated a significant overhaul in school education. A 35-member committee, chaired by Michel Danino, was established under the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC).
  • This committee is dedicated to reshaping the Social Science syllabus for Classes 6 to 12.
  • The committee comprises influential members like Sanjeev Sanyal, Banabina Brahma, MD Srinivas, and others from diverse educational and research backgrounds.
  • Tasked with developing syllabi and teaching materials for history, geography, political science, sociology, and psychology, the committee aligns its goals with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for school education.

IIT Roorkee, IIRS Dehradun Sign MoU to Boost Space Science & Technology Research

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO, Dehradun, signed an agreement to boost advanced research and education in the field of Space Science and Technology.
  • The MoU was signed at IIT Roorkee in the presence of members from both institutions.

Lieutenant Governor Approves 10 more Family Courts in Delhi

  • Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved the setting up of 10 more family courts in the national capital to help adjudicate cases pending for more than a decade.
  • This move will take the number of family courts in the National Capital to 31 from the current 21.
  • The decision came four years after the proposal was first mooted in October 2019.
