US, South Korea sign agreement aimed at deterring North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile threat

  • United States and South Korea have revised a bilateral security agreement aimed at deterring North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile threat. South Korean Defence Minister Shin Won-sik and his US counterpart Lloyd Austin signed the updated agreement at the security talks held in the capital, Seoul today.
  • South Korean Defence Ministry said, the Tailored Deterrence Strategy (TDS) aims to counter the threat of nuclear weapons and other armaments by North Korea. The revisions made to the agreement have not been made public yet.
  • Earlier, South Korea's Defence Ministry had said Shin and Austin would discuss jointly countering threats by North Korea, including through executing an extended deterrence strategy. The strategy, which holds that the United states will use strategic military assets, including nuclear forces, to defend its allies, has taken on a greater significance as North Korea pushes ahead with its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes.

India ranked 117th among 129 nations in inclusiveness index by US varsity.

  • India is ranked 117th in the list of 129 countries in the world in the inclusiveness index published by the Othering and Belonging Institute (OBI) at California University, United States. Smaller countries like Bangladesh (106) and Israel (115) were placed better than India.
  • The index examines inclusivity in terms of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and the general population using several measures.

Airgun Surrender Abhiyan initiative selected to present in UNESCO's International Conference

  • The Airgun Surrender Abhiyan initiative of Arunachal Pradesh Government has been selected as India's best success story on wildlife conservation to present in the UNESCO's International Conference on Biosphere Reserves held at Sabah, Malaysia yesterday. Dr. Damodhar A.T. represented India on the occasion and presented India's country report along with the success story in this UNESCO's International Conference and meeting on Biosphere Reserves.
  • The Airgun Surrender Abhiyan is an initiative of the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the state Government. Under the scheme people were invited to voluntarily surrender their Airguns and licensed guns to stop the use of these guns to kill birds and other wild animals.
  • The programme was officially launched on March 17, 2021 at Lumdung in East Kameng District where in 46 air guns were surrendered and Lumdung was declared first Airgun free village of Arunachal Pradesh.

  • New Zealand launched a new interactive map to restore a minimum of 15 percent local biodiversity within every catchment in the next nearly 100 years.
  • Aim: To provides a tool for those seeking to make strategically significant investment decisions on biodiversity redress
  • The interactive map from Eco-index includes information on the type of habitat that existed there historically and targets for restoring 15 percent of biodiversity in each area.

Unprecedented Seismic Activity in Iceland Sparks Concerns

  • Iceland is on high alert as a seismic swarm, marked by 800 earthquakes in 14 hours, raises concerns of an imminent volcanic eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula. The Iceland Met Office has issued a stark warning of a "considerable" likelihood of a volcanic eruption in the coming days, following a series of seismic events that have rattled the country.
  • This seismic activity has prompted the declaration of a state of emergency in Iceland. On November 10, Iceland experienced an extraordinary swarm of earthquakes, with a staggering 800 quakes hitting the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula in less than 14 hours.
  • Over the preceding 24 hours, a total of 1,400 earthquakes were recorded, adding to the already alarming tally of 24,000 seismic events since late October. The most potent quake, measuring 5.2 in magnitude, struck approximately 40 km from Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland.

ICICI Bank receives RBI nod to make Securities a wholly owned subsidiary

  • The central bank's nod is subject to certain conditions, while it awaits other required statutory and regulatory approvals, the company said in an exchange filing on Thursday.
  • In June, the private lender had approved a proposal to delist ICICI Securities and become a wholly owned subsidiary of the bank after delisting. ICICI Securities, promoted by ICICI Bank, is the country's leading retail-led equity franchise, distributor of financial products and investment bank.
  • As of the quarter ending September, ICICI Bank held 74.79% stake in ICICI Securities. Shares of ICICI Securities closed 2.91% higher at Rs 659.60 apiece on the BSE, while the parent firm's stock ended 0.30% up at Rs 937.45 per share before the announcement, as compared with a 0.22% fall in the benchmar k Sensex.

Ashok Leyland delivers India's first LNG-powered haulage truck

  • Ashok Leyland, the flagship Company of the Hinduja Group and India's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, today, commenced the delivery of India's first LNG-powered haulage truck - AVTR 1922 to Mahanagar Gas Limited in Hosur.
  • With this, Ashok Leyland becomes the first Indian Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to unveil an in-house LNG engine compliant with BSVI Stage II emission standards.
  • The AVTR 1922, powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), is built on the AVTR platform and shares a high degree of commonality with Ashok Leyland's existing diesel truck range. This ensures that our customers benefit from streamlined service and maintenance processes.

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping to meet ahead of APEC Summit

  • United States President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet prior to the 30th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco, aiming to mitigate tensions in what's viewed as a critical global rivalry.
  • White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement the leaders would discuss the "continued importance of maintaining open lines of communication" and how they "can continue to responsibly manage competition and work together where our interests align, particularly on transnational challenges that affect the international community."

Meghalaya launches 'Food Security' campaign to achieve zero hunger

  • In a concerted effort to ensure food security for the most vulnerable, the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs in Meghalaya has launched the 'Food Security' Campaign, which focuses on sensitising the public about the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013 and strives to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 – 'Zero Hunger.
  • The campaign was launched by Minister-in-Charge Comingone Ymbon at the Shillong Press Club on Monday.Speaking to the media, Minister Ymbon informed reporters that the Department is exploring the use of social, mainstream, and community-based media to communicate the verticals of the Department and apply a hyper-local approach to reason with the public on pertinent matters linked to the provisions of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013.
  • The Minister further explained that the objectives of the Campaign is to create general awareness about food security being a right of the citizen and calls upon the public at ground zero community level to work together towards 'Zero Hunger' to meet the need of the public at the bottom of the poverty pyramid.
  • The One Nation One Ration Card scheme (ONORC) will also be taken up as one of the salient features of the National Food Security Act, he added.

  • Rescue authorities in the collapsed tunnel in Dehradun are maintaining constant communication with the trapped laborers, speaking to them every hour to keep them calm and motivated.
  • The workers, who are said to be in good health and spirits, have been assured that experts and engineers are working round the clock to rescue them. As a precautionary measure, medicines and dry ration have been sent to the workers inside the tunnel. Contrary to rumors, there is electricity inside the tunnel.

Tamil Nadu rains: Schools, colleges to remain closed in Chennai today.

  • All schools, colleges, and educational institutions will remain closed in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Puducherry districts today, Wednesday, November 15, due to heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu. Several parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday. After coastal and interior districts of Tamil Nadu received severe downpours on Tuesday, many districts declared a holiday for schools on Tuesday.
  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted the possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 14.
  • According to the weather forecasting agency, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and over the South Andaman Sea.

  • Indore has been maintaining its position as being the cleanliest city in the country for sixth time in a row.

Kerala High Court allows medical termination of 32 weeks pregnancy on account of mental health of mother.

  • The Kerala High Court has permitted a petition seeking medical termination of 32 weeks pregnancy on the grounds that mental health of the mother was vital to the child, even if he/she was to be born alive.
  • The order was passed by the single-judge Bench of Justice Devan Ramchandran on a petition filed by the parents of the unborn child, seeking relief under provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
  • The petitioners contended that they had definite advice that the baby was suffering from very grievous abnormalities and even if the pregnancy was allowed to continue, the baby would have serious complications, which would not allow a normal life. 
  • The High Court directed that if the baby was to be born alive, then all care and protection would be given. 
  • The single-judge Bench requested the Chairperson of the Medical Board to oversee the processes with respect to medical termination and take a call on how to go on with it, including by performing a C-Section, if it was found to be the most rational one to do in the given circumstances.

No offence under SC ST Act if remark made within four walls: Punjab & Haryana High Court

  • The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that offence under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 cannot be made out if any insulting or intimidating remark has not been made within public view or at a public place.
  • The single-judge Bench of Justice Deepak Gupta recently passed the order on a petition challenging an order of Special Judge, Ludhiana, wherein the anticipatory bail plea of the appellant had been rejected in a murder case.
  • The Special Judge had further rejected the plea claiming offence for passing casteist remarks under Sections 302, 307, 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860 and Sections 3 & 4 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), 1989.
  • The High Court, while granting anticipatory bail to accused-appellant Rajinder Kaur, observed that in order to constitute an offence under the Act, the insults or intimidation should be on account of the victim belonging to either Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe.

Supreme Court for amendment in rules to allow e-copies of trial court records in criminal appeals

  • The Supreme Court has recently observed that allowing the production of electronic copies of trial court records in criminal appeals, rather than having them produced in physical form, would lead to a more environmentally conscious approach, along with facilitating quicker availability of records.
  • The Bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Sanjay Karol suggested amendment of sub-rules 2 and 3 of Rule 5 of Order XX of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013, noting that the rules presently called for the production of physical copies of original trial court records in criminal appeals involving a sentence of life imprisonment or death penalty.
  • The calling of such records in other cases was subject to specific orders of the concerned Bench.
  • The Apex Court proposed that Sub-rule 3 should be amended to insert the words 'soft copy' before the words 'original records', resulting in e-copies of the Original Records being requisitioned.
  • It said that such requisition of the soft copy of the record, after the amendment, could be extended to cases where leave was granted against an order of acquittal or conviction.
  • As per the Bench, once received, such soft copy of the records could be provided to the counsel appearing for the parties.
