US Announces $553 Million Investment in Adani's Sri Lanka Port Terminal Project

  • The United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) revealed a substantial investment of $553 million in Adani Ports' container terminal project located in the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka. This significant financial commitment aims to boost private-sector investments that support economic development and strategic partnerships in the region.
  • This move demonstrates the United States' commitment to enhancing economic growth and development in the region, positioning Sri Lanka strategically along major shipping routes to serve the growing economies.
  • Adani Ports initiated this project in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) and John Keells Holdings. The consortium, named Colombo West International Terminal Pvt. Ltd., has adopted a Build-Operate-Transfer model with a 35-year duration, where Adani Ports holds a majority stake of 51%.

Australia Signs Climate, Migration and Security Pact with Pacific's Tuvalu

  • Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a bilateral agreement with Tuvalu, aimed at countering China's influence in the Pacific and protecting the tiny island nation from climate change.
  • The agreement, which made Australia Tuvalu's "partner of choice", covers climate change, security and human mobility.
  • Australia will create a special visa for up to 280 Tuvaluans annually, 2.5% of the 11,200 population. Funds will also be provided for land reclamation in Tuvalu to expand land in capital Funafuti by around 6%.

  • Deepak Gupta, who is serving as Director (Projects) of GAIL (India) Limited was appointed as Nominee Director on the board of South-East Asia Gas Pipeline Company Limited (SEAGP).
  • Gupta has been serving as Director (Projects) of GAIL since October 2022. He is a Mechanical Engineer, a DCE alumnus, with more than three decades of rich and diverse experience in oil and gas sector encompassing project management, construction management and business development functions.

Asian Championships: Parneet Kaur Shocks Jyothi to Clinch Gold

  • Teenager Parneet Kaur secured the biggest win of her career when she pipped ace Indian compound archer Jyothi Surekha Vennam to clinch the individual crown at the Asian Championships.
  • In an all-Indian women's compound individual final, Parneet trailed by two points till the halfway mark but the bespectacled 18-year-old produced two perfect last rounds to level the score 145-145 and force a tie-breaker.
  • Fresh from winning a hat-trick of gold at the Asian Games last month, Jyothi was not at her best and lost the shoot-off 8-9 as Parneet won her maiden individual gold medal at the International level.

India and Netherlands Sign a Memorandum of Intent to Cooperate on Medical Product Regulation, and Enhancing the Quality of Medical Products

  • India and Netherlands signed a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) for cooperation on medical product regulation and enhance the quality of medical products and health care services for both countries, at Hague in Netherlands. The MoI was signed during the meeting between Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Bhagwant Khuba and Minister of Health, Welfare and Sports of Netherlands, Ernst Kuipers. An Indian delegation led by Khuba was in Netherlands and participated in the second World Local Production Forum (WLPF) meeting being held in the Hague.
  • The World Local Production Forum is a platform created at the initiative of WHO with the aim of increasing access to medicines and other health technologies.

Senior Congress Leader Rameshwar Dadhich Part Ways with Ashok Gehlot, Joins BJP

  • In a significant blow to the Congress, a senior leader from Jodhpur, Rameshwar Dadhich, shifted allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party just before the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly Elections. Having a close association with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and hailing from the same district as the CM, Dadhich parted ways with the Congress after a 50-year-long association.

World Pneumonia Day

  • World Pneumonia Day is observed annually on November 12 with an aim to highlight and raise awareness about the complications and issues related to pneumonia. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the rate of the severity of pneumonia is more in children less than five years of age and adults above 65 years of age are also at maximum risk.
  • World Pneumonia Day was first observed in 2009, under the 'Stop Pneumonia' initiatives by the Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia.
  • 'Defeat Pneumonia: Every Breath Counts, Every Action Matters' is the theme for World Pneumonia Day 2023.

India's Success in Reducing TB Incidence Acknowledged in WHO's Global TB Report 2023

  • The World Health Organization released its Global TB Report 2023. According to the report, India has made tremendous progress in improving case detection and reversed the impact of COVID-19 on the TB programme. The treatment coverage has improved to 80% of the estimated TB cases, an increase of 19% over the previous year.
  • India's efforts have resulted in reduction of TB incidence by 16% in 2022 (from 2015) almost double the pace at which global TB incidence is declining (which is 8.7%). The mortality of TB has also reduced by 18% during the same period in India and globally. The World Health Organization has made a downward revision of the TB mortality rates from 4.94 lakh in 2021 to 3.31 lakh in 2022, a reduction of over 34%.

Ministry of Tourism, Government of India participates in World Travel Market 2023

  • Ministry of Tourism, along with various stakeholders including tour operators and state tourism departments participated in WTM London 2023. The Ministry of Tourism had taken a space of 650 square meters for the Incredible India Pavilion at WTM 2023, London and showcased varied tourism products and series of transformative experiences for travellers to India under the theme 'Incredible India! Visit India Year 2023'.
  • In WTM 2023, 47 participants including tour operating companies / DMCs, State Tourism Departments from Delhi, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Assam and Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) participated in the Incredible India Pavilion whereas States Tourism Departments of Kerala, Karnataka, Ladakh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, took their own pavilions and showcased their products and services and connected with potential clients and partners.

Centre Appoints Justice Manmohan as Acting Chief Justice Of Delhi High Court

  • The Central Government announced the appointment of Justice Manmohan as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. This decision came after Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma was elevated to the position of a judge in the Supreme Court of India.
  • The appointment of Justice Manmohan to the position was made in accordance with Article 223 of the Constitution of India.
  • Justice Manmohan has been a part of the Delhi High Court since his appointment as an Additional Judge in March 2008. In December 2009, he was appointed as a permanent judge.
