NATO Freezes Security Treaty

  • NATO member countries that signed a key Cold War-era security treaty froze their participation in the pact just hours after Russia pulled out, raising fresh questions about the future of arms control agreements in Europe.
  • The alliance said its members who signed the treaty are now freezing their participation in the pact.
  • Most of NATO's 31 allies have signed the Treaty of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, which was aimed at preventing Cold War rivals from massing forces at or near mutual borders.

SBI Authorised to Issue & Encash Electoral Bonds

  • The Government of India has authorised the State Bank of India, in the 29th Phase of sale, to issue and encash Electoral Bonds through its 29 Authorized Branches with effect from 6th to 20th of this month.
  • The Electoral Bonds shall be valid for 15 calendar days from the date of issue and no payment shall be made to any payee Political Party if the Electoral Bond is deposited after expiry of the validity period.
  • The Electoral Bond deposited by an eligible Political Party in its account shall be credited on the same day.
  • Those political parties registered under RP Act 1951 shall be eligible to accept electoral bonds.

AMFI Appoints Venkat Nageswar Chalasani as New CE

  • The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) announced the appointment of Venkat Nageswar Chalasani as the new Chief Executive (CE). The appointment marked the end of the 6-year term of N. S. Venkatesh.
  • Prior to this role, Chalasani served as the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) at the State Bank of India (SBI), where he spent almost four decades. He also held various board positions, and was part of panels set up by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Ministry of Finance.

  • IT major Infosys announced a three-year strategic collaboration agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help financial organisations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region accelerate their cloud transformation journeys.
  • As part of the collaboration, Infosys and AWS aim to support financial organisations, like retail banking at NatWest Group, in accelerating their cloud adoption journeys.
  • Customers will receive transformative cloud services from AWS, domain knowledge and delivery from Infosys, and Infosys Capital Markets' expertise to transform business models and modernise applications, delivering operational efficiency.

  • Ton-up Anmolpreet Singh dished out an unbelievable exhibition of power-hitting before India seamer Arshdeep Singh used all his experience and powered Punjab to their maiden title triumph in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament with a 20-run win over Baroda.
  • Anmolpreet blazed away to 113 off 61 balls while Nehal Wadhera smashed 61 in 27 deliveries to propel Punjab to an imposing 223 for 4 in the allotted 20 overs.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde Unveils Shivaji Maharaj Statue in J&K's Kupwara

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with other dignitaries, inaugurated a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The statue, a symbol of cultural pride, was installed at the 41 National Rifle (Maratha LI) camp, which is located in close proximity to the Line of Control (LoC) separating India and Pakistan.
  • The inaugural event saw the presence of notable personalities, including Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Sudhir Mangantiwar and Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha.
  • Their participation added significance to the occasion, highlighting the unity and cultural exchange between the two regions.

Aligarh Nagar Nigam Passes Resolution Seeking Change in City's Name to 'Harigarh'

  • The Aligarh Nagar Nigam passed a resolution seeking a change in the city's name to 'Harigarh'.
  • The resolution, which was passed, will be sent to the Uttar Pradesh government for consideration.
  • Aligarh, which houses the famous Aligarh Muslim University, was earlier called Ramgarh, according to the UP government website.
  • In the mid-1700s, the city was renamed Aligarh after its most important fort.
  • The first attempt to change the name of Aligarh was made by former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh in 1992 but he could not succeed as there was a Congress government at the Centre.
  • In 2015, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had also pushed for recognition of the fact that Aligarh's original name was 'Harigarh'.

Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana Appointed Surveyor General of India

  • Senior bureaucrat Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana was appointed as Surveyor General of India as part of a senior-level bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Centre.
  • Makwana is a 1995-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre.
  • He was appointed as the Surveyor General of India, Survey of India, Department of Science and Technology in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary by keeping the recruitment rules for the post in abeyance.

India Successfully Test-fires 'Pralay' Missile

  • India successfully test-fired its surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missile 'Pralay' from the Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
  • The missile has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
  • The missile met all its mission objectives.
  • 'Pralay' is a 350-500 km short-range, surface-to-surface missile with a payload capacity of 500-1,000 kg.
  • 'Pralay' has been developed for deployment along the Line of Actual Control and Line of Control.

Former Karnataka Speaker Chandre Gowda Passes Away

  • Veteran Karnataka politician and former minister D. B. Chandre Gowda passed away at the age of 87.
  • Gowda, who had represented all the four Houses—Legislative Assembly, Council, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha, was also part of political parties such as Praja Socialist Party, Karnataka Kranti Ranga, Janata Party, Janata Dal, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
  • He was in the limelight when he resigned as Lok Sabha member in 1978 to make way for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to contest from Chikkamagaluru Constituency, and worked for her victory.
  • After vacating the seat for Indira Gandhi, Gowda became the Member of the Legislative Council, from 1978 to 1983 representing Congress, and became a Minister in Devaraj Urs cabinet.
  • Later, with the change in political scenario, he quit Congress along with Urs to join Karnataka Kranti Ranga.
  • He was Rajya Sabha member in 1986, representing the Janata Party, which later became Janata Dal.
  • In 2009, he contested from Bangalore North Parliamentary Constituency and entered Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket.
  • Gowda, who served as a minister in various governments, also served as Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1985 and also as a Leader of the Opposition in both the Legislative Assembly and Council.

Uttarakhand Foundation Day

  • Uttarakhand Foundation Day or Uttarakhand Divas is celebrated on November 9 every year. This day is observed to commemorate the state's formation. This day reflects the triumph of the tireless spirit of its people and their rich history.
  • Uttarakhand is bordered by Tibet to the north, Nepal to the east, the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh to the south, Himachal Pradesh to the west, and northwest.
  • Uttarakhand was formerly known as Uttaranchal. It was carved out of the hilly regions of Uttar Pradesh and became the 27th state of the Republic of India on November 9, 2000. The quest for a separate state was primarily driven by the unique socio-cultural identity of the region and the developmental needs of its hilly terrain, which were believed to be neglected under the administration of the vast and populous state of Uttar Pradesh. The movement for statehood began in earnest in the early 1990s.

World Usability Day

  • World Usability Day, or Make Things Easier Day, founded in 2005 by the Usability Professionals Association, is celebrated annually on the second Thursday in November. In 2023, it took place on November 9.
  • It promotes the values of usability, usability engineering, user-centred design, universal usability, and every user's obligation to demand better things.
  • Every year, a new theme is chosen for the discussion. The theme for World Usability Day 2023 is 'Collaboration and Cooperation'. This theme focuses on the importance of joining forces to create designs and experiences that are all about the users.

National Legal Services Day

  • India, annually on November 9, observes National Legal Services Day to mark the adoption of the Legal Services Authorities Act 1987, which was officially enacted on the same date in 1995. Since then, Legal Services Day has been consistently celebrated across the various states of India with the primary objective of promoting legal awareness among its citizens.
  • The establishment of National Legal Services Day serves to raise awareness about the availability of free legal aid for all citizens, regardless of their background or identity. This nationwide celebration takes place on November 9 every year.
  • In 1995, the Supreme Court of India enacted the Legal Services Authorities Act with the primary objective of extending legal support to marginalised sections of society. This significant legislation was officially passed on November 9, 1995, and since then, it has been commemorated as National Legal Services Day.

Western Sydney University to set up Campus in Bengaluru

  • Western Sydney University (WSU), which is ranked 375th globally, is poised to become the third Australian university to set up a campus in India, following in the footsteps of Deakin University and the University of Wollongong.
  • Australian Education Minister Jason Clare said that Western Sydney University (WSU) is keen on establishing its independent campus in Bengaluru by 2025.

IIT Madras Appoints 'Student Ombuds' to Address Student Concerns

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Board of Governors appointed G. Thilakavathi IPS, former Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, as 'Student Ombuds'.
  • In her role as Student Ombuds, G. Thilakavthi IPS will be overseeing and addressing concerns related to student grievances, safety, and disciplinary matters. Through her role, she will responsible for fostering and nurturing an inclusive atmosphere on the campus, ensuring that students have a supportive environment for their academic and personal growth.

UGC Notifies Regulations for Foreign Varsities to Set Up India Campus

  • Close on the heels of Australia's Western Sydney University announcing plans to establish an independent campus in Bangalore, the University Grant Commission (UGC) notified regulations permitting foreign universities ranked among the world's top 500 to set up branch campuses in India, decide their admission process, fee structure, and also repatriate funds to their parent campuses.
  • Two or more than two universities can collaborate to set up campuses in India, provided each institution meets the eligibility criteria individually. Each foreign university can set up more than one campus in India. However, they shall make a separate application for each proposed campus to the commission.
  • The guidelines were notified almost 10 months after the draft was made public for feedback. Based on the inputs, the final regulations have been tweaked. For instance, the final rules mandate that foreign universities should ensure that international faculty appointed to teach at the Indian campuses stay in the country for at least a semester.
  • Also, the final rules have increased the time period for the standing committee to process applications from 45 days to 60 days. The recommendations of the committee should be placed before the UGC in 60 days, as opposed to 45 days in the draft regulations.

  • Union Minister Shri Anurag Thakur announced that 54th International Film Festival will be held from 20th to 28th November, 2023, in Goa.
  • British film "Catching Dust" will open the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 20, while American film "The Featherweight" will be the closing title.
  • Hollywood actor Michael Douglas will be awarded with the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the eight-day-long annual festival organised by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
