Antony Blinken in Japan for G7 Foreign Ministers' Meet

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken shifted his intense diplomacy on the Israel-Hamas war to Asia with an appeal for the Group of Seven (G7) leading industrial democracies to forge consensus on how to deal with the crisis.
  • As he and his G7 counterparts held two days of talks in Japan, Blinken said that it was critically important for the group to show unity as it has over Russia's war in Ukraine and other major issues and prevent existing differences on Gaza from deepening.

Singapore PM to Step Down Before 2025 Poll

  • Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that he planned to bow out and hand over power to his deputy, Lawrence Wong, late next year (2024), before the 2025 general election.
  • He has served as head of the long-ruling People's Action Party, or PAP, and as the PM since 2004. In 2022, he named Wong, who is also finance minister, as his designated successor.
  • He said that passing the baton to Wong before the national polls will allow Wong to win his own mandate and take the country forward.

Mundra Becomes India's First Port to Handle 16.1 Million Tonnes of Cargo

  • Adani Group's flagship Mundra Port in Gujarat set another record by handling 16.1 million tonnes of cargo in October, the highest-ever volume by any port in India.
  • It is the largest port in the country with 102 MMT of cargo handled so far this year with a good 9 per cent year-on-year growth. The port crossed the 100 MMT mark in 210 days, surpassing the record of 231 days last year (2022).

  • Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews was given "timed out" in a World Cup clash against Bangladesh, becoming the first man to suffer in the 146-year history of international cricket
  • The former captain took more than two minutes to take strike and opposition skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed, which was upheld by the on-field umpire

Bangladesh to Host 24th Asian Archery Championships in 2025

  • Bangladesh will host the 24th Asian Archery Championships in 2025 after winning votes in the bid at the World Archery Asia Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • A total of twenty four member countries of the Asian continent participated in the congress.
  • Bangladesh and China applied for bids as host countries for the 24th Asian Archery Championship
  • The 23rd Asian Archery Championship will begin on Sunday (Nov 5) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Archer Deepika Kumari Secures Two Gold Medals and One Silver at the National Games

  • Deepika Kumari, the former world No. 1 archer, demonstrated her exceptional talent and determination at the National Games by clinching two gold medals and one silver. The Asian Championships gold medal-winning shooter, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, also secured the top spot in the 50m rifle 3-positions event.
  • Deepika Kumari, representing Jharkhand, began her medal rush with a gold in the women's individual archery category.
  • She later paired with Mrinal Chauhan to secure the top podium finish in the mixed team archery category.

Heeralal Samariya is the New Chief Information Commissioner

  • Senior bureaucrat Heeralal Samariya was sworn in as the chief of the Central Information Commission (CIC) by President Droupadi Murmu, making him the first Dalit person to hold that post.
  • The top post of the transparency panel was vacant following the end of the term of Y. K. Sinha in October. Samariya has a distinguished career in public service, having served as Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
  • The Commission is led by the Chief Information Commissioner and can have up to 10 information commissioners.
  • The appointment comes after the Supreme Court's October directive to the central and state governments to fill the vacant positions, warning that the 2005 Right to Information Act would become ineffective otherwise.

Gujarat CM Unveils Crest of Indian Navy Warship 'Surat'

  • The crest of Indian Navy's latest guided missile destroyer 'Surat' was unveiled by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in the presence of the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. Hari Kumar and other senior officers at a ceremony held in Surat.
  • As per reports, this is the first warship named after the city of Gujarat, and in a first, the unveiling of the crest of a warship was held in the very city after which it was named.
  • The crest of the under-construction warship depicts the famous Hazira lighthouse that was built in 1836 at the southern entrance of Khambhat and an Asiatic lion symbolising majesty and strength.

Sunil Narine Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • Mystery spinner Sunil Narine announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • The 35-year-old played 6 Tests, 65 ODIs, and 51 T20Is and was part of the T20 World Cup-winning West Indies side in 2012.
  • The T20 globetrotter last played for the senior national team in 2019 in T20I cricket. His last Test was in 2013 while he had not played an ODI after 2016.
  • Sunil Narine also announced he would retiring from the domestic 50-over competition at the end of the ongoing Super 50 Cup in which he is representing Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Narine's record for the West Indies in international cricket is impressive. He took 92 wickets in 65 ODI matches and 48 wickets in 47 T20 International matches. In addition, he played six Test matches, taking 21 wickets with best figures of 6-91.

Writer Leela Omchery Passes Away

  • Eminent singer, musicologist and writer Leela Omchery passed away at the age of 94 years.
  • Born at Thiruvattar in Kanyakumari in 1929, she lived much of her life in Delhi. She had proved her mettle in Carnatic music, Hindustani music, Sopana Sangeetham and folk songs.
  • Proficient in Carnatic, Hindustani, Sopanam and folk music, she was honoured her with Padma Shri in 2008.

  • World Radiography Day is celebrated annually on November 8. The vital day serves as a global tribute to a ground-breaking discovery that revolutionised the field of healthcare and medicine.
  • World Radiography Day is observed each year on November 8 to commemorate the discovery of x-radiation by German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895. Rontgen was the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
  • The European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American College of Radiology (ACR) collaborated to celebrate the first World Radiography Day in 2012.
  • The theme for World Radiography Day 2023 is 'Celebrating patient safety'. The theme emphasises the importance of the professional role in maintaining the efficiency of healthcare systems and in ensuring patient safety beyond radiation protection.

The CoE is a significant step towards the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative of the Government of India, focusing on building indigenous low-cost sensor manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) capabilities to enhance air quality across urban and rural areas of India.

Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta Accepts Director Uttam Sarkar's Resignation

  • The Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta accepted the resignation of Director Uttam Kumar Sarkar.
  • The resignation was accepted with immediate effect.
  • Sarkar would continue as a professor in the MIS (Management Information Systems) Group of the institute.
  • Sahadeb Sarkar, a professor in the Operations Management Group of the Institute, was appointed as Director-in-Charge in accordance with the provisions of the IIM Act 2017.
  • Uttam Sarkar had been appointed Director in August 2021 after the controversial exit of Anju Seth.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Three High Court Chief Justices for Elevation as Apex Court Judges

  • The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud recommended the names of three High Court Chief Justices as Supreme Court judges. The Supreme Court of India has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges and is presently functioning with 31 judges.
  • Delhi High Court Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Augustine George Masih and Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta were recommended for elevation to the Centre for Supreme Court judges.
