IIT Madras, Tel Aviv University Develop Effective Aerogel-adsorbents

  • Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Tel Aviv University, Israel, developed an aerogel adsorbent that can remove trace pollutants from wastewater.
  • This graphene-modified silica aerogel removes over 76 per cent of trace pollutants (PPM level) in continuous flow conditions, offering a sustainable path for large-scale water purification. The research team is dedicated to enhancing these results for large-scale applications.
  • The research was led by Rajnish Kumar from IIT Madras and included Subhash Kumar Sharma and P. Ranjani, Research Scholars, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras and Hadas Mamane, School of Mechanical Engineering, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Uttarakhand Government Establishes Rajaji Tiger Reserve Conservation Foundation

  • The Uttarakhand government announced the establishment of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve Conservation Foundation with the aim of promoting ecological, economic, social, and cultural development in and around the Rajaji Tiger Reserve. This decision was made during a state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
  • The foundation will promote eco-tourism in the area, allowing local communities to benefit economically from tourism activities while preserving the natural beauty of the reserve.

CCAvenue.ae Launches Mobile-based QR Code Payment Solution in the UAE

  • Payment gateway CCAvenue.ae, the UAE-based subsidiary of fintech firm Infibeam Avenues, launched a mobile-based QR Code payment solution for merchants in the UAE market.
  • It is for the first time, the company forayed into the offline payment space in the UAE market with its innovative QR-Code payment offerings for merchants.
  • It is a pivotal and strategic move marking the company's debut on the international stage of offline payment solutions, starting with the UAE market.
  • The company is also set to launch CCAvenue TapPay (SoftPoS) in the UAE market as part of CCAvenue.ae, which will convert an NFC-enabled mobile device to function as a POS (point-of-sale) machine, allowing card payments with just a tap.

  • Bank of Baroda launched a new lifetime zero balance savings account this festive season. As a part of its 'BoB Ke Sang Tyohaar Ki Umang' campaign the public sector lender introduced the BoB LITE Savings Account with a lifetime zero balance facility.
  • Through this account the customers can enjoy all the banking services without the requirement of maintaining minimum balance.

NASA Launches Mission to 20,000-year-old Supernova Remnant to Understand Life Cycle of Stars

  • NASA launched a new sounding rocket to study a stellar event in the Cygnus Loop, which is a supernova remnant that took place 20,000 years ago. Cygnus is about 2,600 light years away from the Earth. The sounding rocket mission, named the Integral Field Ultraviolet Spectroscope Experiment (INFUSE) was launched from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
  • As per astronomers, a massive star, which was perhaps 20 times the size of the sun exploded in a supernova so bright that it was possibly seen from Earth. After this supernova, some matters of the explosion remain suspended in the universe, which is known to astronomers as the Cygnus Loop. The INFUSE mission will study the Cygnus Loop and try to understand the life cycle of stars.

Lionel Messi Receives Ballon d'Or Title for Eighth Time

  • Argentina captain Lionel Messi won a record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or for the best player in the world, beating Norway's UEFA Player of the Year and treble winner Erling Haaland of Manchester City to the prestigious prize.
  • Messi became the first MLS-based player to claim the coveted prize, although the triumph comes largely on the back of his exploits with his country in Qatar. Former Manchester United player and Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham handed his prize-signing Messi the award in Paris.
  • Prior to Messi receiving his award, Barcelona and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí won the Ballon d'Or Féminin after a record-breaking year with club and country. She helped Barça win Liga F and the Champions League last season, before leading Spain to World Cup glory in the summer.
  • The Ballon d'Or is an annual football award presented by French news magazine France Football since 1956. Between 2010 and 2015, in an agreement with FIFA, the award was temporarily merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year (founded in 1991) and known as the FIFA Ballon d'Or. That partnership ended in 2016, and the award reverted to the Ballon d'Or, while FIFA also reverted to its own separate annual award The Best FIFA Men's Player.

National Games: Jyothi Yarraji Clinches 100m Hurdles Gold in Record Time

  • Hangzhou Asian Games silver medallist Jyothi Yarraji and Tejas Shirse smashed the National Games records on way to winning gold medals in 100m and 110m hurdles in athletics competitions.
  • At the 37th National Games in Goa, Jyothi finished the race in 13.22s and improved upon her own mark, while Tejas, who had clocked 13.80s rewrote the Games record, improved his timing further by winning the final in 13.71s.

Shooter Anish Bhanwala Wins Bronze and India's 12th Paris Olympics Quota Place

  • Anish Bhanwala rose above the Chinese and won the bronze medal and the Olympic quota in 25-metre rapid fire pistol in the Asian shooting championship in Changwon, Korea.
  • Anish qualified strong with 588, and eventually missed out on a chance for a better medal as he lost the shoot-off against the eventual silver medallist Dai Yoshioka of Japan.

Norway to Support India's 'Hunger Project' in Uttarakhand

  • Norway embarked on a significant initiative to support India's 'Hunger Project' in Uttarakhand. This project aims to empower women leaders, enhance food security, and protect the environment, particularly in the ecologically sensitive region of Uttarakhand. With a budget of Rs. 44.7 million and a three-year duration until September 2026, this endeavour holds great promise for the marginalized households in the state.
  • The Hunger Project is primarily focused on building the capacity of elected women representatives (EWRs) and federations. These women play a vital role in strengthening local governance and, in turn, improving food security and livelihood opportunities for marginalized households. The project's emphasis on strengthening van panchayats, or forest councils, is key to achieving these objectives.
  • One of the main goals of the program is to enhance the leadership of women in gram panchayats, the local self-governing bodies. Empowered women leaders can play a pivotal role in conserving forests and natural resources, as well as promoting sustainable living and food security. Collaboration with van panchayats and the broader community, especially women, is a key strategy in this endeavor.

Union Finance Minister Launches Phase IV of 'Operation Sesha'

  • Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman presided over as Chief Guest at the inaugural session of the first ever three-day-long Global Conference on Cooperation in Enforcement Matters (GCCEM) in New Delhi.
  • The Union Finance Minister also launched phase IV of 'Operation Sesha' by Indian Customs in collaboration with RILO Asia-Pacific and RILO Middle-East to curb the illegal trade of timber including red sanders. Sitharaman stressed on curbing of illicit trade of red sanders with emphasis on preserving other precious flora and fauna.

India's Own Iron Dome

  • India is readying its own long-range air defence system and plans to deploy it by 2028-2029. The system is being developed by DRDO under the ambitious Project Kusha.
  • According to reports, the system will be able to detect and destroy incoming stealth fighters, aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions at ranges up to 350 km.
  • The interception capabilities of the indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) system, will be "comparable" to the Russian S-400 Triumf air defence system.

India's Cyber Operations Centre

  • India's first centre for cyber operations and security (CenCOPS), which is almost ready to start functioning, boasts of tools such as facial recognition, data analytics and predictive policing, evidence collection, and advanced forensic investigation.
  • The advanced cyber security station is housed in the Heritage Centre of Indian Air Force building in Chandigarh's Sector 18. The central government had sanctioned Rs. 88 crore for the project, whose foundation stone was laid by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in May 2023.
  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) would initially run the cyber centre for three years before the Chandigarh Police take over. DRDO will also impart training to cops on cyber frauds and usage of tools to analyse such cases and data.

Air Marshal P. K. Barbora, Former IAF Vice-chief Passes Away

  • Former IAF vice-chief, Air Marshal P.K. Barbora (Retd), known for calling a spade a spade, passed away at the Army Research and Referral Hospital.
  • Air Marshal Barbora (Retd) is regarded within the Indian Air Force (IAF) as the force behind the reactivation of the Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) airstrip in 2008, after over four decades of closure, at a time when the government and the IAF itself were sceptical.
  • Barbora was heading the Western Air Command (WAC) at the time. DBO, the highest airfield in the world, is an Advanced Landing Ground close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, east of Siachen. He had also activated the Fuk Che Advanced Landing Ground.
  • Born in Shillong, Air Marshal Barbora was the first officer from the Northeast to reach such a high post in the armed forces.

World Thrift Day

  • World Thrift Day, celebrated on October 31, is a day dedicated to highlighting the value of saving money and fostering a culture of being economical. While it might not be as widely recognised as some other global observances, its importance lies in encouraging financial responsibility and thriftiness.
  • World Thrift Day has a fascinating history that traces its roots back to the aftermath of World War 1. The idea of World Thrift Day was introduced by the Italian economist Filippo Ravà during the inaugural International Thrift Congress in Italy in October 1924. His vision was to create a worldwide event that would underscore the importance of saving money, especially during challenging economic times.
  • This concept gained significant popularity and support, leading to the inaugural World Thrift Day on October 31, 1925. For those curious about the date choice, it was selected to coincide with the anniversary of the first International Thrift Congress. Since then, World Thrift Day has been celebrated in numerous countries across the globe.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day

  • National Unity Day, also called 'Rashtriya Ekta Diwas', is celebrated on October 31 every year to honour the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister after the country's independence in 1947. For his iron will and nerves of steel, he is often called the 'Iron Man of India'. For his keen initiative and sympathy, his people affectionately called him 'Sardar'.
  • The Modi government has been marking Sardar Patel's birth anniversary as the "Rashtriya Ekta Diwas" since 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the celebrations of the first Rashtriya Ekta Diwas with the 'Run for Unity' programme in Delhi. Patel was born on October 31, 1875 in Gujarat's Nadiad. He is credited for the consolidation of more than 560 princely states into the Union of India.
  • Patel died on December 15, 1950. In 1991, India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, was bestowed on him posthumously.

14 BHU Scholars Get Prime Minister's Research Fellowship

  • A total of 14 research scholars of Banaras Hindu University were selected for the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship.
  • The students who were selected for the current cycle of PMRF are Bandan Kumar, Aindabi Maitra, Kuhoo Madhav, R. B. Ananth, Raju Rai, and Sudipa Bhunia (Dept. of Geology), Deepika Sharma, Karmdeo Prajapati, Nikhil Srivastav, and Ritesh Tolani (Dept. of Chemistry), Ankita Gupta (Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development), Garima Kandwal (Dept. of Biochemistry), Prashasti Pandey (Dept. of Botany), and Syona Tiwari (Dept. of Bioinformatics).
  • As part of the scheme selected research scholars receive an attractive fellowship and a research contingency grant. The fellowship amount for the first two years is Rs. 70,000 per month, followed by Rs. 75,000 per month for the third year and Rs. 80,000 per month in fourth and fifth years.
  • This scheme, which is open to very few Central Universities, is aimed at fostering high quality research. Launched in the budget 2018-2019, this scheme seeks to attract the best talent into research.

Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan's New Book 'Breaking the Mould' to be Released in December

  • Penguin Random House India in a statement said that Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan's new book in collaboration with fellow economist Rohit Lamba, 'Breaking the Mould: Reimagining India's Economic Future,' will be released on December 7.
  • The former central banker's latest book - his third since he exited the RBI governor's office in September 2016 - comes ahead of the national elections, which will likely be held in the second quarter of 2024. Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rajan - along with a dozen other eminent economists, had released a five-year economic strategy for India to meet mounting economic challenges.
