Malaysia Names Sultan Ibrahim as Next King

  • Malaysia's royal families elected the powerful and outspoken Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar from the southern state of Johor to be the country's next king.
  • Malaysia has a unique system in which the heads of its nine royal families take turns to be monarch for a five-year term. The Southeast Asian country is a parliamentary democracy, with the monarch serving as head of state.
  • Sultan Ibrahim will take over from current King Al-Sultan Abdullah on January 31, 2024.
  • King Al-Sultan played an unusually active role in Malaysian politics, picking the country's last three Prime Ministers.
  • The federal constitution grants the monarch only a few discretionary powers, with the king largely required to act upon the advice of the Prime Minister and cabinet.

India Abstains from UN Vote on Israel

  • India abstained in the UN General Assembly on a resolution that called for an immediate humanitarian truce in the Israel-Hamas conflict leading to a cessation of hostilities. It also called for unhindered humanitarian access in the Gaza strip.
  • The 193 members of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), which met in a resumed 10th Emergency Special Session, voted on the draft resolution submitted by Jordan and co-sponsored by more than 40 nations including Bangladesh, Maldives, Pakistan, Russia and South Africa.
  • The resolution titled 'Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations' was adopted with 120 nations voting in its favour, 14 against it and 45 abstaining.
  • Besides India, countries that abstained included Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Ukraine and the UK.
  • The Jordanian-drafted resolution did not make any mention of the militant group Hamas, with the US expressing outrage at the omission of evil.

Tata Group to Make iPhones in India for Global Market

  • Tata Group will start making Apple iPhones in India for domestic and global markets within two and a half years, announced Electronics and Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The development highlights India's growing production prowess and reflects a significant departure from Apple's previous strategy of selling largely Chinese-made new devices to customers across the world.

  • Five MSME lending products completed the test phase under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulatory sandbox cohort.
  • Products of the entities that completed the test phase were evaluated based on mutually agreed test scenarios and expected outcomes.
  • The entities whose products completed the test phase are FinAGG Technologies Private Limited, Mynd Solutions Private Limited, Rupifi Technology Solutions Private Limited, Small Industries Development Bank of India, and SysArc Infomatix Private Limited.

Asian Para Games Hangzhou: Indian Wrapps up Event with best-ever Medal Haul

  • In the Asian Para Games at Hangzhou in China, Indian contingent wrapped up the event with their best-ever medal haul after clinching a record-breaking 111 medals. India won 29 gold, 31 silver, and 51 bronze medals, placed fifth in the medal count. This remarkable feat superseded India's previous best of 72 medals, which was recorded in the 2018 edition of the Asian Para Games in Indonesia.

India to Issue Visas to Canadians but Not under These Four Categories

  • In what comes as the first sign of a thaw between Canada and India following weeks of tensions over the Khalistan issue, India resumed visa services for Canadians.
  • The Indian embassy in Ottawa started processing business, medical and conference visas.
  • Emergency services will continue to be handled by the Indian High Commission and the consulates in Toronto and Vancouver.
  • However, it mentioned that visa services won't be available for the following purposes: Tourism, Studies (For students), Employment and Cinema.
  • The embassy added that these services would be dealt with as the circumstances dictate.

IFS Officer Vani Sarraju Rao New Indian Ambassador to Italy

  • Senior diplomat Vani Sarraju Rao was appointed as India's new ambassador to Italy.
  • Rao, who is a 1994-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, succeeded Neena Malhotra.
  • Rao served as an Additional Secretary in the MEA.

J&K Gets a New Police Chief

  • R. R. Swain, an AGMUT cadre IPS officer of 1991 batch, is set to take charge as Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, from November 1.
  • Swain will succeed DGP Dilbag Singh, who retires October 31.
  • After taking over as intelligence chief in June 2020 following his repatriation to the Union Territory after 15 years of central deputation, Swain has been instrumental in destroying the terror ecosystem by initiating stern action against militant sympathisers and their over-ground workers, as well as their channels of funding.
  • As head of the intelligence wing of the UT police, he became the first ex-officio Director of the State Investigation Agency (SIA), which was constituted by the J&K government in November 2021 to coordinate with the National Investigation Agency and other central agencies for speedy and effective investigation and prosecution of terror-related cases.

Launch of Third ACTCM Barge

  • Third Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile (ACTCM) Barge, LSAM 17 (Yard 127) was launched by Cmde V. Pravin, AWPS (Mbi) at M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane. With all major and auxiliary equipment/systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers, this Barge is a proud flag bearer of 'Make in India' initiative of Ministry of Defence.
  • The MSME shipyard has successfully delivered two Barges. These Barges are being built under the classification rules of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The availability of ACTCM Barges will provide impetus to operational commitments of Indian Navy by facilitating embarkation and disembarkation of articles / ammunition to Indian Navy Ships both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.

World Stroke Day

  • Every year, World Stroke Day is observed on October 29. The World Stroke Organisation celebrates this day. It arranges a lot of awareness programs and campaigns to make people aware of stroke's signs and symptoms.
  • The annual event was started in 2006 by the World Stroke Organization (WSO) and the WSO declared stroke a public health emergency in 2010. The WSO now has an ongoing campaign that serves as a year-round interface for advocacy, policy, and outreach to support strides and continue progress made on World Stroke Day.
  • The World Stroke Campaign's goodwill ambassadors include Indian Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, former Miss Egypt Dalia El Behery and cyclist Alberto Contador.
  • The theme for World Stroke Day 2023 is 'Together We Are # Greater Than Stroke".

Nobel Prizes

  • The Nobel Prizes are five separate prizes that, according to Alfred Nobel's will of 1895, are awarded to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.
  • Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901.
  • Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace (Nobel characterised the Peace Prize as "to the person who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses").
  • The prize ceremonies take place annually. Each recipient (known as a 'laureate') receives a green gold medal plated with 24 karat gold, a diploma, and a monetary award.
  • A prize may not be shared among more than three individuals, although the Nobel Peace Prize can be awarded to organisations of more than three people.

IIT Kanpur Announces eMasters Degree in Renewable Energy and E-mobility

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) introduced an innovative eMasters degree programme in Renewable Energy and e-Mobility. This programme, designed by experts from the Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, is aimed at cultivating a proficient and highly skilled workforce committed to environmental responsibility.
  • Unlike traditional master's programmes, this executive-friendly eMasters degree programme does not mandate a GATE score for admission. It allows professionals to continue their careers without interruption and offers the flexibility to complete the programme within 1-3 years.

Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari Acting Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court

  • The Central Government notified the appointment of Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari as the Acting Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court with immediate effect.
  • Justice Tiwari took charge upon the retirement of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi who demitted office.
  • Justice Tiwari enrolled with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh in 1990 and began practicing law at the Allahabad High Court. He later shifted to Nainital upon the creation of the Uttarakhand High Court in 2000.
  • Thereafter, he was designated a Senior Advocate in 2009, served as the President of the High Court Bar Association in Nainital in 2008 and acted as special counsel for the State Government in various cases.
  • The sanctioned judge strength at the time of creation in 2000 was 7; this was increased to 9 in 2003. Justice Ashok Desai was the inaugural holder of the office.
