US House of Representative Elects its New Speaker

  • Republican Congressman from Louisiana Mike Johnson was elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, bringing an end to three weeks of uncertainty in US politics. The position of Speaker of the House of Representatives is one of the most powerful political chairs in the country and is third in the line of succession after the US President.
  • Johnson was elected by 220 to 209 votes in a bitterly divided Congress, three weeks after his predecessor Kevin McCarthy was unceremoniously voted out of the seat for the first time in US history. In the 435-member House, the Republicans hold a slender majority with 221 seats against 212 of the Democrats.

CCI Becomes Member of International Competition Network's Steering Group

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) became a part of the prestigious 18-member steering committee of the International Competition Network (ICN) after consistent efforts.
  • The Competition Commission of India was established on October 14, 2003 and became fully functional in May 2009 with Dhanendra Kumar as its first chairman.
  • The steering committee is the ICN's apex body. The ICN, comprising 140 competition agencies, typically provides antitrust authorities with a specialised, yet informal, venue for maintaining regular contacts and addressing practical competition concerns.
  • The ICN is the only global body devoted exclusively to competition law enforcement and its members represent national and multinational competition authorities. Members produce work through their involvement in flexible project-oriented and results-based working groups.

India Heading Towards Groundwater Depletion Tipping Point

  • India is close to reaching its groundwater depletion tipping point, a new report by United Nations University, Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), has warned.
  • The report 'Interconnected Disaster Risks Report 2023', which looks at six environmental tipping points — accelerating extinctions, groundwater depletion, mountain glacier melting, space debris, unbearable heat and an uninsurable future —also found that 27 of the world's 31 major aquifers are depleting faster than they can be replenished.
  • India is the world's largest user of groundwater, exceeding the use of the United States and China combined. The north-western region of India serves as the bread basket for the nation's growing 1.4 billion people, with the states of Punjab and Haryana producing 50 per cent of the country's rice supply and 85 per cent of its wheat stocks.

Reliance Jio Partners With Plume to Provide In-Home Services Enhanced By AI

  • India's top telecom operator, Reliance Jio Infocomm, announced a partnership with California-based Plume to deliver smart home and small business services to its nearly 200 million subscribers across India, leveraging Plume's cloud platform.
  • This partnership brings forth a range of innovative offerings under the names 'HomePass' and 'WorkPass'. These services, enabled by Plume's cutting-edge platform, encompass whole-home adaptive WiFi, device and application performance optimisation, cyberthreat protection, parental controls, WiFi motion sensing, and more.
  • Additionally, Jio's support and operations teams will have access to Plume's 'Haystack' Support and Operations Suite. This suite aids in quicker identification and resolution of performance issues, facilitates the pinpointing of network fault locations, and provides insights into the customer experience.
  • The partnership will complement the carrier's JioFiber and JioAirFiber networks.

Air India Announces Senior Level Appointments

  • In a major development, Air India appointed Captain Klaus Goersch as Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer. Goersch will oversee flight operations, engineering, ground operations, integrated operations control (IOCC) and cabin crew functions in the newly-created position. It also announced various other senior level appointments.
  • Goersch will be based out of Air India's new Gurugram headquarters and will be replacing the incumbent chief of operations, Captain R. S. Sandhu who will transition to an advisory role.
  • The airline also appointed Manish Uppal as Senior Vice President for flight operations. Uppal transitioned from AirAsia India a few months ago. Additionally, Henry Donohoe's corporate role in safety, security, and quality will be expanded to encompass emergency response, and his title was adjusted to Senior Vice President for Safety, Security, and Quality.
  • Air India is the flag carrier of India, headquartered in New Delhi.It is owned by Talace Private Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, after Air India Limited's former owner, the Government of India, completed the sale. The airline was founded by J. R. D. Tata as Tata Airlines in 1932. Air India's mascot's the Maharajah (Emperor) and the erstwhile logo consisted of a flying swan with the wheel of Konark inside it.

Ambani Scions Get Shareholders' Nod to Become RIL's Non-executive Directors

  • The shareholders of Reliance Industries (RIL) approved the appointment of Isha Ambani, Akash Ambani and Anant Ambani as the company's non-executive directors. Over 98 per cent votes were in favour of Isha and Akash's appointment. The appointment of Mukesh Ambani's youngest child – Anant, saw some resistance. 7.24 per cent of the total votes were against his appointment.

Asian Para Games: Sheetal Becomes First Indian Woman to Win Two Gold Medals

  • Teenaged armless archer Sheetal Devi became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games as the country's record haul swelled to 99 on the penultimate day of competitions.
  • India won 17 medals, including seven gold, with the shuttlers contributing the most number of medals -- eight (with four gold).

Asian Para Games: Hisar Badminton Player Tarun Dhillon Bags gold in Doubles Category

  • In a major achievement, Hisar based para badminton player Tarun Dhillon won a gold medal in the badminton men's doubles SL3-SL4 event at the Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou in China.
  • It is the third Asian Games medal for Tarun Dhillon who had earlier won a silver and a gold medal, in 2014 and 2018 respectively.
  • Also, the 32-year-old was awarded with the Arjuna Award last year (2022).
  • Tarun and Nitesh defeated the Indonesia team in a thriller match by a score of 9-21, 21-19, 22-20.

India to Host UN Forum on Forests to Deliberate on Forest Fires and Certification

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change held a Country-Led Initiative (CLI) event as part of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) from 26-28 October, 2023 at the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
  • More than 80 delegates participated from over 40 countries and 20 international organizations, both in person and online.
  • The Country Led Initiative (CLI) of UNFF focuses on two thematic areas -- forest fires and best practices on its prevention and restoration in fire- affected areas, and forest certification and sustainable forest management.
  • The United Nations Forum on Forests promotes the management, conservation, and sustainable development of all types of forests. India holds the distinction of being a founding member of UNFF.
  • The UN General Assembly adopted the first-ever UN Strategic Plan for Forests for the period of 2017-2030. This Strategic Plan serves as a global framework for actions at all levels to achieve the sustainable management of all types of forests, including trees outside forests, and to combat deforestation and forest degradation.
  • The meeting is expected to come out with implementable frameworks and recommendations for management of forest fire and forest certification leading towards Sustainable Forest Management, which will be considered for discussions at the 19th session of UNFF scheduled at UN Headquarters, New York in May 2024.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 7th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. This prestigious event brought together leading figures from the telecommunications industry to showcase cutting-edge technologies, discuss vital issues, and promote innovation.
  • Under the theme 'Global Digital Innovation,' IMC 2023 aims to reinforce India's position as a developer, manufacturer, and exporter of cutting-edge technologies. This includes 5G, 6G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and critical discussions on issues related to the semiconductor industry, green technology, and cybersecurity.

Zen Technologies Secures Order from MoD for Tank Training System

  • Zen Technologies Limited secured a Rs. 100 crore (inclusive of GST) order from the Ministry of Defence for its advanced force-on-force tank training system, enabling tank units to train in real terrains without live ammunition.
  • The force-on-force tank training system, designed and developed in-house, received approval from the army after extensive trials, indicating potential demand in domestic and international markets. Zen is optimistic about the army's potential adoption of the Zen Armoured Combat Training System (ACTS) for comprehensive combined arms training.

Army Celebrates 'Shaurya Diwas' to Mark Landing of Forces in Kashmir in 1947

  • The army celebrated the 'Shaurya Diwas' to mark the 76th year of the landing of forces in Kashmir which ensured the first civil-military victory of Independent India. The Indian Army troops landed at the Budgam Airport to evict Pakistani forces from Jammu and Kashmir, a day after the Instrument of Accession was signed between Maharaja Hari Singh and the Republic of India.
  • During the 'Shaurya Diwas' organised on Friday, a replication of the historic event was performed to pay obeisance to the brave soldiers and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • Former Union and State Minister Babanrao Dhakne died at the age of 86.
  • He was considered a prominent leader of the Vanjari Community of Maharashtra.

International Bar Association Annual Conference 2023
