World's First Gender Balance Framework Held in Dubai

  • The world's inaugural framework for gender balance in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) took centre stage at the 'Gender Balance and 4IR' workshop, held as part of the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the Global Future Councils in Dubai.
  • This framework is the result of a collaborative partnership between the UAE Gender Balance Council and the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution UAE (C4IR UAE), an affiliate of the World Economic Forum. Mona Al Marri, Vice President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, proudly announced the UAE's status as a global leader in setting new standards for gender equality. During the workshop, participants explored opportunities to develop a 4IR model that promotes gender balance and delved into how to leverage global expertise in shaping a more equitable and inclusive future in the industrial landscape.
  • The 'Gender Balance and 4IR' workshop was inaugurated by Her Excellency Huda Al Hashemi, Member of the UAE Gender Balance Council and Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Strategic Affairs. Co-hosted by the UAE government and the World Economic Forum, the Annual Meeting of the Global Future Councils attracted approximately 600 international experts and intellectuals across 30 councils, alongside government officials and representatives from international organizations and academia.

President Joe Biden Appoints Indian-origin Diplomat as US Ambassador to Indonesia

  • Indian-origin diplomat Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir was appointed by President Joe Biden as US ambassador to Indonesia.
  • Lakhdhir, who has served the State Department for almost 30 years, is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, and was Executive Secretary of the Department of State.
  • A Harvard graduate and an M.S. from the National War College, Lakhdhir had formerly served as an ambassador to Malaysia from 2017 to 2021.
  • Prior to that, Lakhdhir served as US Consul General in Belfast, Northern Ireland from 2009 to 2011.
  • She joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and has served as Director of the Office of Maritime Southeast Asian Affairs, which included responsibility for US relations with Indonesia.

RBI Approves Appointment of Ashok Vaswani as New MD & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment of Ashok Vaswani as the Managing Director & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMB) for a period of three years.
  • The appointment is with effect from the date of taking charge, which shall not be later than January 1, 2024.
  • This will be the first time in its 20-odd years of operations that the Bank will be helmed by an outsider.
  • Vaswani has a proven track record spanning three and a half decades.
  • Vawani was Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank, UK and subsequently CEO of their Global Consumer, Private, Corporate and Payments businesses and Member of the Group Executive Committee. Earlier, He was CEO Citigroup Asia Pacific and Member of the Citigroup Global Operating & Management Committees. Currently, he is President of Pagaya Technologies Ltd - a US-Israeli AI Fintech.

RBI Imposes Penalty on L&T Finance for Non-compliance of Norms

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) charged the Non-Banking Finance Company (NBFC) L&T Finance with Rs. 2.50 crore for failing to adhere to certain regulatory provisions regarding interest rates.
  • The statutory inspection of the company was conducted by the RBI with reference to its financial position as of March 31, 2021, and March 31, 2022.
  • As per the examination of the Risk Assessment Reports, Inspection Reports, Supervisory Letters, and all related correspondence, the RBI found that the NBFC had not disclosed to its retail borrowers the gradation of risk and rationale for charging different interest rates to different categories of borrowers in the loan application form or sanction letter.
  • It also failed to notify the change in the penal interest rate to its borrowers whenever it charged higher rates than what was communicated at the time of sanction. Additionally, it failed to give notice of change in the terms and conditions of loans to its borrowers when the NBFC charged an annualised rate of interest, which was higher than what was communicated at the time of sanction.

ISRO Tests the Country's First Human Spaceflight Mission Gaganyaan

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully completed a test launch and recovery of a crew module for the Gaganyaan mission, bringing the country's first human space flight project one step closer to reality. The test involved simulating an emergency situation to ensure the crew module could safely remove itself from the test vehicle and land in the sea. ISRO aims to launch an unmanned flight for the Gaganyaan mission in the first half of 2024, followed by a manned mission around 2025.

Hyderabad to Host Second Edition of E-Prix in 2024

  • The Hyderabad E-Prix Formula E race will return for a second edition, which will be held on February 10, 2024.
  • After a period of uncertainty regarding the future of the race, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and Formula E confirmed Hyderabad's slot in the final calendar for the tenth season of Formula E, which will have 16 rounds.
  • Next year (2024), there will be an Indian driver (Jehan Daruvala) set to debut in the all-electric single-seater championship driving for Maserati MSG Racing apart from the Indian team Mahindra Racing.

Virat Kohli First Batter Ever to Score 3,000 Runs across All ICC Tournaments

  • Virat Kohli heartbreakingly failed to equal Sachin Tendulkar's incredible record of 49 centuries in ODI cricket as he fell for 95 against New Zealand in match no. 21 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Dharamsala. Kohli was attempting to reach the landmark with a six but fell just short of the boundary.
  • However, en route to scoring 95, Kohli became the first-ever batter to score 3,000 runs across all ICC tournaments. Kohli now has 3,054 runs in ICC events while former West Indies opener Chris Gayle is second on the list with 2,942 runs.

Asian Para Games 2023: India Sweeps Medals in Men's T63 High Jump, Men's F51Club Throw

  • India swept all the three medals in men's high jump T63 and men's club throw F51 events with Shailesh Kumar and Pranav Soorma clinching gold in the respective categories to begin their Hangzhou Asian Para Games with a bang in Hangzhou.
  • Kumar set an Asian Para Games record of 1.82 m to win the men's high jump T63 gold while compatriots Mariyappan Thangavelu (1.80 m) and Govindbhai Ramsingbhai Padhiyar (1.78m) took the silver and bronze, respectively.

Japan Becomes First Nation to Launch an Electromagnetic Railgun from an Offshore Vessel

  • Japan achieved a significant milestone in the realm of defence technology. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in collaboration with the Acquisition Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), a division of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, successfully test-fired a medium-caliber maritime electromagnetic railgun from an offshore platform.
  • ATLA made an official announcement, announcing the successful testing of the maritime electromagnetic railgun. This remarkable feat marked the first time any nation has managed to launch a railgun from an offshore platform. Typically, railguns are mounted on ships, but Japan aspires to employ this technology both on land and at sea, making this test an unprecedented advancement in the field.
  • A railgun is a cutting-edge electromagnetic weapon designed to launch projectiles at incredibly high velocities, reaching speeds of approximately Mach 7, which is seven times the speed of sound. This technology is capable of targeting various objects, including ships, missiles, and aircraft. The primary goal of Japan's railgun program is to integrate this technology with long-range missiles, augmenting its capacity to intercept aerial targets effectively.

Indian Navy Gets Third Guided Missile Destroyer 'Imphal'

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) delivered to the Indian Navy INS Imphal, the third ship of the Project 15B Class of stealth guided missile destroyers, four months ahead of schedule.
  • It can accommodate a crew of 312 persons, has an endurance of 4,000 nautical miles, and can carry out a 42-day mission with extended mission time in an out-of-area operation.
  • Imphal's keel was laid on May 19, 2017 and the ship was launched into water on April 20, 2019. The ship had sailed out for her maiden sea trials on April 28, 2023, and, ever since, has undergone a comprehensive schedule of trials in harbour and at sea, leading up to its Delivery within a record timeframe of only six months. The time taken to build Imphal and for her trials is the shortest for any indigenous destroyer.

South Korea, US, Japan Hold First Joint Air Drills

  • South Korea, the United States and Japan carried out their first joint aerial drills.
  • The exercise, which involved a US nuclear-weapons-capable B-52 bomber, came as Seoul, Washington and Tokyo beef up their defence cooperation against growing missile and nuclear threats from North Korea.
  • The trilateral exercise took place south of the Korean peninsula, where Seoul and Tokyo's air defence identification zones overlap.
  • The exercise was "planned to expand the three countries response capabilities against North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats.

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) received a prestigious UN award for its top-ranked sustainability initiatives, including the Sustainability Reporting Standards Board. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) honoured ICAI during the 8th World Investment Forum for its contributions to sustainability reporting.   • They were recognised for their work through the Sustainability Reporting Standards Board (SRSB).

  • UNCTAD announced the winners during the 8th World Investment Forum in Abu Dhabi on October 17 2023.

  • Indian-origin academics from the University of Oxford and a South Asian historian from King's College London are among 30 winners of the UK's 3-million-pound 2023 Leverhulme Trust prize, which recognises exceptional research across different fields.
  • Professor Amia Srinivasan from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford was recognised for her work on epistemology, social and political philosophy, feminism, metaphilosophy, and the history of philosophy.
  • Fellow Oxford University Professor, Ridhi Kashyap, from the Department of Sociology, was honoured for her work on demography, social statistics, computational social science, digital and computational demography, and gender inequalities.
  • The prizes, created in the name of Philip, Third Viscount Leverhulme, recognise and celebrate the achievements of outstanding researchers whose work has already attracted international recognition and whose future careers are exceptionally promising.

IIM Kashipur Inks MoU with Atal Tinkering Lab to Foster Innovation among Students

  • The Design Innovation Centre (DIC) of the Indian Institute of Management Kashipur signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Atal Tinkering Lab of The Gurukul Foundation School, Kashipur to foster a culture of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship in young students.
  • The MoU signing occurred at the IIM Kashipur campus, where Professor Kumkum Bharti, Coordinator DIC, and Neeraj Kapoor, Chairman of ATL-TGFS, penned the agreement. Professor Kulbhushan Balooni, Director of IIM Kashipur, and Ramesh Chandra Arya, Chief Education Officer, Udham Singh Nagar District, Government of Uttarakhand, were also present.
  • The MoU aims to facilitate the exchange of skills and resources between DIC and ATL in creating and elevating the landscape of innovation and design thinking in schools by encouraging knowledge and resource exchange for design-led innovation and skill-building. It also aims to facilitate engagement among both institutions by conducting research and development projects, skill-building programs, training programmes, and workshops.

IIM Bangalore's Team Horizon Wins the First Edition of Air India's SOAR

  • Team Horizon of IIM Bangalore won the top honours of the National Champion in the first edition of SOAR (Spirit of Aviation Reimagined), Air India's business challenge-based annual nationwide B-school competition that saw 27 premier business schools vying for the top honours.

Gujarat's Dhordo Awarded UNWTO's Best Tourism Village 2023

  • The beautiful village of Dhordo in Kutch district of Gujarat garnered international recognition after it secured a place on the list of the 54 best tourism villages announced by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
  • The UNWTO's Best Tourism Villages 2023 accolade is a tribute to villages leading the way in nurturing rural regions, preserving landscapes, upholding cultural diversity, safeguarding local values, and celebrating culinary traditions. Launched in 2021, this initiative is a vital component of the UNWTO's Tourism for Rural Development program, which aims to promote sustainable tourism practices.
  • In its third edition, the UNWTO's initiative selected 54 villages from diverse regions out of nearly 260 applications. The announcement was made during the UNWTO General Assembly held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from October 16 to 20, where leaders and experts gathered to discuss the future of global tourism.
  • Alongside Dhordo, several other villages from around the world achieved recognition, including Barrancas in Chile, Biei in Japan, Cantavieja in Spain, Dahshour in Egypt, Dongbaek in the Republic of Korea, Douma in Lebanon, Ericeira in Portugal, and Filandia in Colombia, among others.
