Global Remote Work Index, India among World's Worst Countries

  • India was ranked 64th out of 108 countries for remote work, marking a significant drop of 15 places compared to the previous year, according to a report released in October 2023. This decline can be attributed primarily to India's subpar digital and physical infrastructure and social safety.
  • The Global Remote Work Index (GRWI), published by cybersecurity firm NordLayer, assessed countries based on four key criteria: cyber safety, economic safety, digital and physical infrastructure, and social safety.
  • The top 10 countries which scored the highest on the Global Remote Work Index (GRWI) were Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Estonia, Lithuania, Ireland, and Slovakia.

COP28 President Seeks Plans to Cut 22 Gigatons of Greenhouse Emissions in 7 Years

  • Sultan Al-Jaber, the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) President, asked 198 member countries for plans to cut 22 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions in the next seven years to keep global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • Al-Jaber asked the parties to join the COP28 pledge for tripling global renewable capacity (reaching 11 TW by 2030) and doubling the annual average global rate of energy efficiency improvements between now and 2030 (reaching 4%). He urged them to come to COP28 from November 30 to December 12 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with tangible commitments to realise this goal.

Kedar Upadhye New Chief Financial Officer of Biocon Biologics

  • Former Cipla global Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Kedar Upadhye was appointed as the new CFO of Biocon Biologics. Current CFO, MB Chinappa took on a strategic finance role at Biocon Group.
  • Chinappa has served as CFO of Biocon Biologics since his appointment in January 2020 and has played an integral role in developing business strategy and enabling profitable growth.
  • Kedar Upadhye has over 23 years of experience in senior global leadership at leading pharma, energy and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) players such as Cipla, Dr. Reddy's, PepsiCo, and Thermax.
  • He joined Biocon from ReNew Energy Global Plc, a NASDAQ-listed decarbonisation, and renewable energy company, where he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

NCLT Approves Himadri, Dalmia Group's Joint Resolution Plan of Birla Tyres

  • Birla Tyres announced that the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the resolution plan for the company. Shortly after Birla Tyres filing, Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd also received verbal approval of a joint resolution plan from the tribunal.
  • Birla Tyres was demerged in 2018 from Kesoram Industries. In May 2022, the company began insolvency proceedings with the Kolkata bench of the NCLT after a case was filed by chemicals firm SRF Ltd, an operational creditor of the B K Birla group firm.
  • The Dalmia Group had submitted a debt resolution plan of Rs. 1,100 crore and offered to repay Rs. 300 crore of the outstanding loans of the two-wheeler tyre manufacturer.

Virat Kohli Beats Sachin Tendulkar

  • Virat Kohli became the fastest hitter in cricket history to reach 26,000 international runs, breaking the record held by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Before the Bangladesh game, Kohli had amassed 25,923 runs from 566 innings. He accomplished this milestone with a magnificent six during the World Cup match against in Pune, in 2023.
  • Virat Kohli is now the fourth-highest run-scorer in world cricket. With 78 centuries and 134 half-centuries, his total runs in all formats stand at 26,026 in 567 innings. There are just three players ahead of him in terms of scoring runs: Ricky Ponting (27,483), Kumara Sangakkara (28,016) and Sachin Tendulkar (34,357). Kohli got past Mahela Jayawardene (25,957), who now stands at number 5 in the list of the highest run-scorers in cricket.

Indian Air Force Successfully Tests BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile

  • In the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully tested the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This achievement illustrated the IAF's expanding capabilities in strengthening India's military capabilities.
  • The BrahMos missile, noted for its supersonic speed and precision, was fired from a Sukhoi fighter jet, demonstrating the IAF's capacity to deploy long-range BrahMos cruise missiles. This successful test is a big step forward in India's defence capability.
  • This air-launched missile is a longer-range variant of the already formidable supersonic weapon system, and it represents a one-of-a-kind collaboration between India and the Russian military sector.

Police Commemoration Day

  • National Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21 every year. It is observed to salute the spirits of police forces and their families and brave police martyred who lost their lives fighting for the country. It is celebrated to motivate and pay respect to the police personnel who perform their duties with the utmost diligence.
  • On October 21, 1959, when twenty Indian soldiers were attacked by Chinese troops in Ladakh due to arguments between the troops, ten Indian policemen lost their lives and seven were imprisoned.
  • After a month, on November 28, 1959, Chinese troops handed over the dead bodies of the martyred policemen and, since that day, October 21 has been observed as Police Commemoration Day in honour of the martyrs every year.

Ministry of Education Reconstitutes JAB for Better Conduct of JEE-Main, Advanced

  • The Ministry of Education reconstituted the board structure and administrative framework of the JEE Apex Board (JAB) for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in IITs, NITs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) etc.
  • As per the notification, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will manage all information technology-related (software) support and back-end activities for pre and post-examination work, including online submission of application forms. "NTA may seek support from NIC/C-DAC as and when required.
  • Professor S. K. Jain, VC of BHU was appointed as the chairperson of JAB. Directors of IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, NIT Rourkela, NIT Surathkal, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT (PPP} Lucknow, IIITM Gwalior, representatives of state government of Madhya Pradesh, Assam /Manipur, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab Engineering College, Chairman of CBSE, Director General of NIC, NTA and C-DAC, and the Additional Secretary/ Joint Secretary (TE) of MoE were appointed as members.

IIT-Delhi, THDC India Limited Collaborate for Transformative Research and Development Initiatives

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the THDC India Limited (THDCIL), a Central Public Sector Enterprise focused on advancing research and development activities in Science, Engineering, and Technology.
  • The agreement is set to span five years. Due to this partnership, THDCIL will partner with IIT Delhi to conduct research studies, pilot projects, and consulting engagements led by faculty members.
  • As a part of this partnership, IIT Delhi will offer essential infrastructural support and access to scientific, engineering, and technical expertise. These resources will be instrumental in facilitating R&D activities, aligning with the academic pursuits of the institute.
  • This collaborative venture between THDCIL and IIT Delhi represents a significant step forward in the fields of research, innovation, and technological advancement, with the potential to yield ground-breaking solutions for various industries and domains.
