UNSC's Missile Curbs on Iran End

  • Despite opposition from the United States, a long-standing conventional arms embargo imposed on Iran expired in line with the terms of a landmark nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.
  • The 13-year ban imposed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) came to an end as part of Resolution 2231 of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – an accord signed in 2015 that gave Iran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme.
  • The Iranian foreign ministry said that all restrictions on the transfer of arms, related activities and financial services to and from the Islamic Republic of Iran are all automatically terminated.
  • The end of the embargo means Iran will legally be able to buy and sell conventional arms, including missiles, helicopters and tanks, and the Iranian foreign ministry said the country can now procure any necessary arms and equipment from any source without any legal restrictions, and solely based on its defensive needs.

Climate Tipping Points Near for Greenland

  • New research suggests the Greenland ice sheet is on track to cross a critical threshold that could cause runaway melting, but that it's also possible the threshold will be crossed temporarily, cooling down the planet and ultimately returning the ice sheet to a stable state.
  • The findings underscore the importance of limiting the planet's warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (about 2.7 Fahrenheit) — or returning to that level, or below, as quickly as possible if humanity exceeds it.
  • The Greenland ice sheet is one of more than a dozen theoretical climate tipping points — rapid, irreversible or abrupt changes — that keep some scientists up at night.

IDFC Gets CCI Nod for Merger with IDFC First Bank

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) gave its approval for the merger of the Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC) and IDFC First Bank. This approval was communicated through a regulatory filing.
  • The merger had previously received the green light from the board of directors of both IDFC and IDFC First Bank in July.
  • However, for the merger to be finalised, it still needs approval from various statutory and regulatory bodies.
  • These include the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
  • The merger also needs the consent of stock exchanges, as well as the agreement of shareholders and creditors of both IDFC and IDFC First Bank.

Diagnostic Services Firm Manipal HealthMap Acquires Medcis Pathlabs

  • Manipal HealthMap, which provides diagnostic services, fully acquired Hyderabad-based Medcis PathLabs to expand its presence in 16 states with more than 100 centres.
  • Bengaluru-based Manipal HealthMap is expanding its services under its parent brand Manipal TRUtest. Manipal HealthMap, in April 2022, acquired a 84 per cent stake in Medcis PathLabs for Rs. 100 crore in an all-cash transaction. In the new deal, it acquired the remaining 16 per cent stake for an undisclosed amount.
  • Medcis PathLabs has 23 laboratories in India, including a central facility in Hyderabad that has accreditation for Molecular, Cytogenetics, Histopathology, and Microbiology. The remaining laboratories offer tests for Biochemistry, Haematology, and Immunology tests.

MeitY Inaugurates Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Lab in Gorakhpur

  • Laying the new technology pathway, the Union ministry of electronics and information technology launched its first Robotic Process Automation (RPA) lab under the Future Skill PRIME Project at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) Gorakhpur.
  • According to the Union government, the new lab was inaugurated during the 26th All India Director's Meet of NIELIT. The Meet is organised to promote the integration of emerging technology with education.
  • The new state-of-the-art RPA lab under the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY), looks to upskill and reskill manpower in RPA domain. This initiative, a first-of-its-kind in Uttar Pradesh also intends to bridge the gap between industry and academia.

IBM, MeitY Join Hands to Boost AI, Quantum and Semiconductors in India

  • Global tech giant IBM signed three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with entities engaged with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to boost research & development (R&D) and skilling in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and quantum technology in India.
  • As part of the three MoUs, the company intends to build a national AI Innovation Platform (AIIP) under the IndiaAI programme. It will also establish a research centre for the semiconductor R&D ecosystem, and develop local quantum services and infrastructure in India. The announcement is likely to help the government expand local capabilities in critical technologies.
  • IBM and the government's Digital India Corporation may together establish an AI innovation platform to focus on AI skilling, ecosystem development, and integrating advanced foundation models and generative AI capabilities.

Multan Sultans Become Pakistan's First Team to Sign a Woman Bowling Coach

  • Pakistan's Multan Sultans became the country's first cricket team to hire a woman bowling coach, signing former Ireland fast bowler Catherine Dalton for next year.
  • Women have historically struggled to establish themselves in the sporting scene of deeply patriarchal and conservative Pakistan, a nation with a fanatical devotion to cricket.
  • Dalton played four one-day internationals and as many Twenty20 internationals between 2015 and 2016, before moving into coaching roles.
  • The Multan Sultans are one of six teams that compete in the Pakistan Super League, which was started in 2016.
  • The other five teams are Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.

Bowling Coach Shane Bond Parts Ways with Mumbai Indians

  • Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond ended his nine-year association as Mumbai Indians bowling coach, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise announced.
  • Bond, who has been associated with MI since 2015, won four IPL trophies as the bowling coach of the team.
  • Bond made the decision to part ways with MI after the five-time IPL champions appointed Lasith Malinga as their bowling coach for season 2024.
  • Malinga, who retired in 2021 and had played for MI, worked with the Rajasthan Royals until this year (2023).

DOLR Signs MoU with NRSC to Monitor Watershed Development Projects

  • The Department of Land Resources, (DOLR) and National Remote Sensing Centre, (NRSC) signed an MoU for monitoring of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana - Watershed Development Component. It aims to restore the ecological balance by harnessing, conserving, and developing degraded natural resources such as soil and water.
  • The MoU was signed in the presence of Secretary, Department of Land Resources Ajay Tirkey and Secretary, Department of Space Somanath in New Delhi.
  • Somanath said that this MoU will aid in better utilization of wasteland and help in ground water recharge.

AAP to Contest Assembly Elections in Mizoram

  • The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will fight the upcoming Mizoram Assembly election, the party's northeast states in-charge, Rajesh Sharma, said.
  • Sharma said that during a meeting with AAP's chief Arvind Kejriwal, the decision to expand the organisation and contest elections in the north-eastern states was taken.
  • Sharma claimed that the people in the Northeast are grappling with various issues, including education, healthcare, inflation, and unemployment, and they believe that the AAP can provide solutions to these problems.

PM Modi Launches 511 Rural Skill Development Centres in Maharashtra

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 511 rural skill development centres in the name of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan in Maharashtra via video-conferencing.
  • These centres are being established across 34 rural districts.
  • They will conduct skill development training programmes across various sectors to provide employment opportunities to the rural youth.
  • Each centre will train about 100 youngsters in at least two vocational courses. The training is being provided by empanelled industry partners and agencies under the National Skill Development Council.

  • The Udhampur military station bagged the 'Best Green Military Station' award, the Army said. The Best Green Station Awards were presented by Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande at the Army Commanders' Conference.
  • Dehradun Military Station secured the 'Second Best' award. Also, Bikaner Military Station was awarded with 'Best Transformative Station' trophy.

Third Naga, Youngest Naga Battalion, Gets President's Colour

  • The 3rd Battalion of the Naga Regiment (3 Naga) got the President's Colour award from Army chief Gen. Manoj Pande, heralding a new phase for the unit that has already bagged several citations.
  • The 'colour', represented by a flag, was presented to the battalion at the Kumaon Regimental Centre (KRC) in Ranikhet.
  • Also called 'Nishan', presidential colours are a military tradition, and seen as the recognition of a battalion's feats.
  • 'Colour' symbolises the collective spirit of the battalion, and 'its acts of valour forged in sweat and blood'.
  • The tradition began under colonial rule but, on November 23, 1950, the 'King's Colour' of the erstwhile British Indian regiments were laid to rest in the Chetwode Hall, Dehradun, to make way for the 'colours' of the President of the Republic of India.
  • The colours are presented by the President or, on her/his behalf, by the Chief of the Army Staff.
  • The 3rd battalion of the Naga regiment was raised on October 1, 2009 at Haldwani, nestled among the Kumaon Hills, home of the Kumaon & Naga regiments.

IIT Bhilai Strengthens Ties with DAAD for International Scientific Cooperation

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Bhilai, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), a German Academic Exchange Service, to further their mutual scientific interests and promote greater collaboration between both countries.
  • The German Academic Exchange Service is the largest German support organisation in international academic cooperation, and its collaboration with IIT Bhilai will enable a greater flow of information and key scientific knowledge.
  • By signing this MoU, both institutions recognise the mutual value of academic and scientific cooperation among scientists from both countries and strive to build cordial relations between their students and researchers.
  • The DAAD and IIT Bhilai's bilateral exchange programme aims to enhance collaboration between them and German universities or research institutions.

UGC Launches WhatsApp Channel for Real-time Updates on Higher Education

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) launched the UGC India WhatsApp Channel for real-time updates on higher education. The WhatsApp channel, UGC-India WhatsApp Channel, seeks to foster an 'inclusive and informed higher education landscape'.
  • With the launch of the new channel, students, faculty, colleges and universities will be able to navigate information on higher education in real-time.
  • The UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar while launching the channel said that the launch of the UGC India WhatsApp channel is a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and informed higher education landscape.

  • Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India, Hardeep Singh Puri launched a book titled 'The Reverse Swing: Colonialism to Cooperation' authored by Ashok Tandon.
  • The book showcases New India's march to glory leaving behind the unfortunate and painful memories of foreign subjugation spanning several centuries. The author has penned down the historical events and the transformations in the Indo-UK relations since independence, not with a view to reopen the wounds of colonial rule but to enlighten the present generations, particularly the large Indian Diaspora, with what India had to undergo prior to independence in 1947 and how it has excelled in various sectors to become world's fifth largest economy and earned a pride of place in the comity of nations.
  • Ashok Tandon is a veteran Indian journalist, columnist, and political commentator with over 50 years of experience in print journalism, media relations, and media academics. Tandon oversaw Media Relations in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's PMO (1998-2004) in the rank of Additional Secretary and later joined as Professor and Director, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism & Communication at its NOIDA Campus. In the UK, Tandon was twice President of the Indian Journalists' Association, Europe (IJA).

Retired Kerala High Court Judge Justice Shaji P. Chaly Appointed Central Government Counsel in Supreme Court

  • Retired judge of the Kerala High Court, Justice Shaji P. Chaly, was appointed as a counsel for the Central government in the Supreme Court.
  • The Union Ministry of Law & Justice notified his engagement to the Group-A Panel of the Supreme Court.
  • He will represent the Central government in cases before the Supreme Court for a period of three years.
  • Born in May 1961, Justice Chaly procured his law degree from Maharaja's Government Law College, Ernakulam.
  • He enrolled as an advocate in January 1986 and practiced before the Kerala High Court and subordinate courts in Ernakulam.
  • Justice Chaly was an extremely active member of the Bar and was elected as president of the Kerala High Court Advocates' Association (KHCAA) in 2014.
  • On April 10, 2015, Justice Chaly was sworn in as an additional judge of the Kerala High Court and was made permanent in April 2017. He demitted office on May 29, 2023.

Justice S. Muralidhar to Practice law in Supreme Court; Conferred Senior Gown

  • Former Orissa High Court Chief Justice Dr. S Muralidhar, who retired from service, is slated to practice law before the Supreme Court of India.
  • The Supreme Court in October designated him as a Senior Advocate.
  • The decision was taken at a full court meeting of the Chief Justice of India and other Supreme Court judges.
  • Justice Muralidhar had also served as judge of the Delhi High Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
