EU Approves World's First Green Bond Standards to Combat Greenwashing

  • In a significant move to combat greenwashing and assist investors in identifying truly sustainable companies, European Union lawmakers approved groundbreaking standards for companies issuing 'green' bonds. This new initiative aims to promote transparency and credibility in the green bond market, preventing misleading climate-friendly claims.
  • Europe, being the global leader in green bond issuance, contributed to more than half of the total volume in 2021. Despite this dominance, green bonds still represent only a modest 3% to 3.5% of the overall bond market.
  • The European Parliament's approval marked the introduction of a voluntary standard for the use of the 'European Green Bond' label, heralded as the first of its kind globally. This standard is designed to guide investors towards genuinely sustainable investment opportunities while providing issuing companies with confidence regarding the suitability of their bonds for environmentally conscious investors.

Israel PM Tells Palestinians to Leave Gaza

  • Hamas militants fired thousands of rockets and sent dozens of fighters into Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip in an unprecedented surprise early morning attack during a major Jewish holiday on October 7, killing dozens and stunning the country.
  • Israel's national rescue service said at least 200 people were killed and more than 1,000 wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years. An unknown number of Israeli soldiers and civilians were also seized and taken into Gaza, an enormously sensitive issue for Israel.
  • At least 198 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed in Israel's retaliation and at least 1,610 wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said.
  • Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Israeli military will use all of its strength to destroy Hamas' capabilities.
  • Israel has maintained a blockade over Gaza since Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007. The bitter enemies have fought four wars since then.

India Elected President of AIBD General Council for Third Consecutive Term

  • India was elected as the President of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) General Conference (GC) for the third consecutive term. Prasar Bharati, India's public service broadcaster, represents the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, at the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development.
  • India previously served two terms as President for the AIBD GC from 2018 to 2021 and from 2021 to 2023.
  • The 21st General Conference and Associated Meetings 2023 (GC 2023) of the AIBD were held from 2-4 October 2023 in Port Louis, Mauritius. The conference was chaired by Gaurav Dwivedi, Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati. It focused on fostering a vibrant and cohesive electronic media environment in the Asia-Pacific region through policy and resource development.
  • Established in 1977 under UNESCO, this international organisation comprises 92 member organisations from 44 countries. These include 26 government members represented by 48 broadcasting authorities, along with 44 affiliates represented by 28 countries and regions across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, Arab States, and North America. India is one of the founding members of the group.

Mont Blanc Height Shrinks by over 2 Metres since 2021

  • Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in France and a symbol of the Alps, has seen a decrease in its height over the past two years, according to new research reported. This decline has been attributed to the impact of climate change on the region.
  • The latest measurements of Mont Blanc's peak indicate that its height now stands at 4,805.59 metres, which is 2.22 metres shorter than the measurement recorded in 2021.
  • These periodic measurements are conducted by climate scientists to monitor the effects of climate change on the Alps.

RBI Keeps Repo Rate Unchanged at 6.5%

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das announced the bi-monthly monetary policy for the financial year 2023-24.
  • The central bank maintained the status quo and kept the repo rate steady at 6.5%. This is the fourth time RBI has kept the repo rate unchanged.
  • This is the fourth time that the central bank has kept the basic rate unchanged. Governor Shaktikanta Das said that the all members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), Dr. Shashanka Bhide, Dr. Ashima Goyal, Prof. Jayanth R. Varma, Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Dr. Michael Debabrata Patra and Shaktikanta Das, unanimously voted to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.50 per cent. The repo rate was last hiked in February 2023 by 25 basis points (bps).

UDGAM Portal for Unclaimed FDs, Savings Accounts

  • The Reserve Bank of India launched a Centralised Web Portal called UDGAM (Unclaimed Deposits - Gateway to Access information) to help and make it simpler for people to search for their unclaimed deposits across different banks at one location. The UDGAM portal was launched in August 2023.
  • The search feature was initially made available on the portal for seven banks, and it was announced to the public that it will be gradually made available for the remaining institutions by October 15, 2023. Now, the RBI has updated the UDGAM portal with a total of 30 banks.
  • The term 'Unclaimed Deposits' refers to funds in savings or current accounts that have not been used for 10 years or in term deposits that have not been repaid within 10 years of the maturity date.

  • Axis Bank announced the launch of 'open by Axis Bank', its digital bank proposition in its latest advertising campaign. The Open 2023 campaign highlights the top 15 features of the bank's digital offerings.
  • The launch seeks to establish 'open by Axis Bank' as the epitome of digital banking, bringing all the features in a user-friendly, modern interface for both existing and new customers.

Europe's First Fully Private Rocket Launch

  • Spain's company PLD Space launched Miura-1 rocket marking Europe's first fully private rocket launch. Miura-1, a recoverable rocket was launched from a site in southwest Spain. The launch is viewed as a boost to Europe's stalled space ambitions.
  • The Miura-1 rocket has been named after a breed of fighting bull. The rocket is as tall as a three-storey building. It has a 100-kg (220-pound) cargo capacity.

Asian Games 2023, Hockey: India Men's Team Wins Gold, Secures Paris Olympics Quota

  • India beat Japan 5-1 in the Asian Games 2023 men's hockey final at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium in Hangzhou, the People's Republic of China to win the gold medal. With the win, the Indian men's hockey team also secured a berth at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
  • This was the Indian men's hockey team's fourth gold medal at the Asian Games after the 1966 and 1988 editions in Bangkok and Incheon 2014.

Highest World Cup Total, Fastest Hundred

  • South Africa laid down an early marker in their Cricket World Cup 2023 opener against Sri Lanka in New Delhi, posting a record total of 428 for 5 in 50 overs. Hundreds from Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen helped the Proteas decimate the Sri Lankan bowling line-up at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
  • South Africa broke a series of records during their whirlwind innings after Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to field on a hot day in the capital city.
  • South Africa posted the highest total in a World Cup match, going past Australia's 417 for 6 against Afghanistan in Perth in 2015.
  • The highest total was possible as three of their batters looked in complete control of the Sri Lankan bowling attack. Standing out was Aiden Markram, who walked into the middle in the 31st over and then went on to hit the fastest-ever hundred in a World Cup match.
  • Markram got to his hundred in just 49 balls, breaking Kevin O'Brien's record of 50 balls in 2011 against England.
  • This was also the first time in a World Cup match where 3 batters from a team scored hundreds in an innings. It is only the 4th instance in ODI cricket.

Asian Games: Indian Duo Satwik-Chirag Wins Historic Doubles Gold

  • Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty earned India's first-ever badminton gold medal at the Asian Games with a straight-game win over South Korea's Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho.
  • World number 3 Satwik and Chirag, who had become the first Indians to win the Asian Championships in 58 years in March 2023, extended their sensational run with a 21-18 21-16 win over Choi and Kim, ranked 15th.
  • It was also India's first medal in men's doubles in 41 years since Leroy D'sa and Pradeep Gandhe won a bronze in 1982 edition.

Ahead Of Polls, Rajasthan Gets 3 More Districts, Total Count Reaches 53

  • Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced the formation of three new districts in poll-bound Rajasthan, taking their total number to 53.
  • The announcement came before the Model Code of Conduct takes effect in the state. The Model Code comes into force when the dates for assembly elections, due later this year, are formally announced.
  • The Rajasthan government had earlier notified the formation of 17 new districts following Cabinet approval to take their total number to 50.
  • The 17 new districts formally came into being in August 2023. Now, with the announcement to create three districts, Malpura, Sujangarh and Kuchaman City, the number of districts in Rajasthan will further rise to 53.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on 4-day Visit to India

  • Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan began a four-day visit to India with an aim to bolster bilateral relations.
  • The presidential visit from Tanzania to India is taking place after a span of more than eight years.
  • Hassan is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The Tanzanian president will also participate in a business and investment forum in Delhi on October 10.

Rajasthan Govt. Issues Order for Conducting Caste Survey in State

  • The Rajasthan government issued an order to conduct a caste survey in the state. With this order Rajasthan became the second state to conduct cast survey. According to the order issued by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, the state government will conduct the survey with its own resources. The survey will collect information on the social, economic, and educational status of all citizens of Rajasthan. The survey is expected to provide valuable data on the caste composition of the state's population, as well as the social, economic, and educational disparities between different castes. The data collected from the survey can be used to design and implement policies and programs that benefit all castes and communities in Rajasthan.

Air Chief Unveils New Ensign at Air Force Day Parade in Prayagraj

  • Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V. R. Chaudhari unveiled a new ensign of the Indian Air Force (IAF), replacing the existing one that was adopted more than seven decades back.
  • The IAF chief released the new ensign at the 91st IAF Day celebrations in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj.
  • In the new ensign, the IAF crest features in the top right corner.
  • The unveiling of the new ensign by the IAF came over a year after the Navy made changes in its ensign shedding its colonial past.
  • The existing ensign was adopted in 1950, replacing the Royal Indian Air Force ensign that featured the Union Jack and the RIAF roundel (red, white and blue).

Prof. Joyeeta Gupta Receives Spinoza Prize in Field of climate CHANGE

  • Indian-origin professor Joyeeta Gupta received the Spinoza Prize, the highest distinction in Dutch science, at a ceremony in the Netherlands for her work in the field of climate change.
  • The Professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) was conferred with the prize by the Netherlands' Minister for Education, Science and Culture Robert Dijkgraaf at The Hague.
  • The Dutch Research Council (NWO) bestows the Spinoza Prize, which includes a grant of 1.5 million euros. The NWO selection committee was highly impressed by the far-reaching and interdisciplinary nature of Gupta's research. Her work was acknowledged as "incredibly broad and interdisciplinary," highlighting its substantial scientific impact. The Spinoza Prize, presented annually since 1995, has been awarded to exceptional scholars across various fields of research.

New Jersey Akshardham, World's Largest Modern Hindu Temple Outside India

  • The world's largest modern Hindu temple outside India, the New Jersey Akshardham, opened. This extraordinary architectural marvel, sprawling across a 126-acre tract, has been brought to life through the tireless efforts of artisans and volunteers who dedicated approximately 4.7 million hours to hand-carve about two million cubic feet of stone.
  • Comprising four varieties of marble from Italy and limestone from Bulgaria, these precious materials embarked on an incredible journey, travelling first to India and then traversing over 8,000 miles across the world to reach their destination in New Jersey. Once in place, these meticulously carved pieces were assembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle to create this monumental Hindu temple.
  • The New Jersey Akshardham is a project by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a global religious and civic organisation within the Swaminarayan sect.
  • This temple marked the third 'Akshardham' or 'abode of the divine' built by BAPS, following in New Delhi and Gujarat, where BAPS is headquartered.
