Mohamed Muizzu Wins Maldives Presidential Election

  • Mohamed Muizzu won the Maldives' presidential election following a second-round run-off against incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The election was viewed as a barometer for the nascent democracy of the Indian Ocean archipelago, as well as its relations with China and traditional ally India.
  • Muizzu leads a party that previously welcomed a surge of Chinese loans and conducted a comprehensive crackdown on dissent when last in power.
  • Incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih conceded defeat after the Elections Commission of the Maldives announced that Muizzu had secured 54.06 per cent of the votes in the run-off election.

Afghan Embassy Ceases Operations in India

  • The Afghanistan Embassy in India ceased its operations, citing a lack of support from the host government, failure to meet expectations in serving Afghanistan's interests and reduction in personnel and resources.
  • The embassy said that this decision, while deeply regrettable, is made after careful consideration, taking into account the historic ties and long-standing partnership between Afghanistan and India.

  • Akash Tripathi, chief executive of MyGov, is the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
  • Akash Tripathi succeeded Amitesh Kumar Sinha.
  • Launched in 2021, ISM's main focus is to establish a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India. It was allocated $10 billion by the Centre. The ISM screens applications received for manufacturing semiconductors in India and shortlists the ones that are eligible for subsidies.

India to Launch Mangalyaan-2

  • Nine years after its wildly successful Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), aka Mangalyaan, India is preparing to send another spacecraft to the red planet.
  • The Mars Orbiter Mission-2 or MOM-2 would reportedly carry four payloads. As per reports, these payloads would contain scientific instruments that will study aspects of the barren planet, including interplanetary dust, the Martian atmosphere and the environment.
  • According to the mission document, payloads will include: a Mars Orbit Dust Experiment (MODEX), a Radio Occultation (RO) experiment, an Energetic Ion Spectrometer (EIS) and a Langmuir Probe and Electric Field Experiment (LPEX).

Asian Games 2023: Avinash Sable Wins Gold in Men's 3000 m Steeplechase

  • The Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, witnessed a historic moment as Avinash Sable, the Indian steeplechase sensation, secured a gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase event. This remarkable achievement not only made Avinash Sable the first Indian man to clinch gold in this event but also marked the breaking of the previous Asian Games record.
  • He clocked an impressive time of 8 minutes and 19.50 seconds, surpassing the record set by Iran's Hossein Keyhani in the Asian Games 2018, which stood at 8 minutes and 22.79 seconds.

Abhay Singh Wins 2-1 against Pakistan's Noor Zaman in Squash

  • As top seed, Abhay Singh won the war of attrition against Noor Zaman for the highest prize of his career. India reclaimed the Asian Games squash gold medal with a 2-1 victory against Pakistan.
  • Before the event began, the Indian men's team was projected to return to the top of the podium after an eight-year absence, with Malaysia and Pakistan, the sport's former powerhouses, as its major competitors.
  • On their route to victory, the Saurav Ghosal-led team defeated both opponents.

Asian Games 2023: Tajinderpal Singh Toor Wins Shot Put Gold

  • At the Hangzhou Asian Games, Tajinderpal Singh Toor of India secured a gold medal in men's shot put, making him the fourth Indian shot putter in history to successfully retain his Asian Games gold.
  • Tajinderpal Singh Toor became the fourth Indian shot putter to successfully defend his Asian Games gold, following the achievements of Parduman Singh Brar, Joginder Singh, and Bahadur Singh Chouhan, who had previously accomplished this feat.
  • Toor saved his best for last, unleashing a monumental 20.36-meter throw in his sixth and final attempt, which won him the gold.

PM Modi Launches Sankalp Saptaah in 500 Aspirational Blocks across the Country

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a unique week-long programme for aspirational blocks in the country called 'Sankalp Saptaah' at the Bharat Mandapam.
  • As per the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) statement, it aims to improve governance at the block level in order to enhance the quality of life of citizens. It is being implemented in 500 aspirational blocks across 329 districts in the country.
  • For implementing the aspirational blocks programme and to prepare an effective block development strategy, chintan shivirs were organised at village and block levels across the country, the statement said.
  • The 'Sankalp Saptaah' is a culmination of these chintan shivirs. 'Sankalp Saptaah' will be observed in all of the 500 aspirational blocks. Each day in 'Sankalp Saptaah', starting from October 3 till October 9, 2023, is dedicated to a specific development theme on which all aspirational blocks will work.
  • The themes for the first six days include 'Sampoorna Swasthya', 'Suposhit Pariwaar', 'Swachhta', 'Krishi', 'Shiksha', and 'Samridhi Diwas' while the last day of the week which is on 9 October, will be a celebration of the work conducted during the entire week, as 'Sankalp Saptaah – Samavesh Samaroh'.

Govt. Extends Tenure of Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman

  • The Union government gave a nine-month extension in service 'on contract basis' to Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairperson Nitin Gupta, the day of his scheduled retirement.
  • Gupta (60), a 1986-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Income-tax department, was appointed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) head in June 2022. He was scheduled to retire on September 30.
  • The CBDT is the apex policy-making body for the Income-tax department. It is headed by a chairman and can have six members who are in the rank of special secretary.

J&K Achieves 100% Open Defecation Free Plus Model Status

  • All 6,650 villages of Jammu and Kashmir were declared Open Defecation-Free (ODF) Plus Model under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jammu and Kashmir has achieved a status that extends beyond constructing toilets; it encompasses the management of grey water and solid waste in each village.

Lt General Raghu Srinivasan Takes Over As Border Roads Organisation Chief

  • Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan assumed charge as the 28th Director General (DG) of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). His appointment to the top post in the BRO follows the superannuation of Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry. Prior to his appointment as the 28th DG of the BRO, the general officer was holding the appointment of Commandant, College of Military Engineering, Pune.
  • Srinivasan is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in 1987.

30th Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise Successfully Concludes

  • The 30th edition of Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) successfully concluded in Singapore. Indian Naval Ships Ranvijay, Kavaratti, submarine Sindhukesari, and a long-range Maritime Patrol Aircraft P8I participated in the exercise.
  • The exercise included combined aviation, firefighting, and damage control exercises were conducted during the period. The exercise witnessed the signing of a Joint Standard Operating Procedure on Submarine Rescue between India and Singapore in the presence of the High Commissioner of India to Singapore and the Singapore Navy Fleet Commander.

Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti Takes Charge as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff

  • Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti assumed charge as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff.
  • He succeeded Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, who retired after more than 38 years of illustrious service.
  • Vice Admiral Sobti was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988, and is a navigation and direction specialist.
  • In his career spanning over 35 years, he has held a variety of command and staff appointments -- both ashore and afloat. The flag officer has commanded INS Nishank, a missile boat, INS Kora, a missile corvette, and guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata.

Captain Bana Singh Nominated as Ambassador for 'War Against Waste' in Jammu & Kashmir

  • In a remarkable move to combat sanitation challenges in rural areas of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Directorate of Rural Sanitation, J&K announced the nomination of country's highest gallantry awardee, the Param Vir Chakra recipient, Captain Bana Singh, a dedicated and decorated former soldier, as the ambassador for the 'War Against Waste' initiative in Jammu & Kashmir. This was announced by the Director Rural Sanitation, J&K, Charandeep Singh at Captain Bana Singh Stadium, R. S. Pura Jammu during an Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS 2023) campaign.
  • Theme of SHS-2023 is 'Garbage Free India' with focus on visual cleanliness and welfare of SafaiMitras.

German Unity Day

  • German Unity Day is the National Day of Germany, which is celebrated on October 3 every year. Also known as 'Tag der Deutschen Einheit', the day has been treated as a German National holiday since 1990 to celebrate the anniversary of the nation's unification.
  • Historically, Germany has associated various dates with its unity and nationhood. However, when we look back at the history of German Unity Day, it all began when the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic unified in 1990 to mark the first-ever single German state.
  • Interestingly, the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, which marked the end of the Cold War, paved the way for German reunification. The Unification Treaty was signed on September 20, 1990, and October 3 was declared as the national holiday which ultimately sealed the end of the division of Germany.

  • In a remarkable achievement, two Indian educators, Deep Narayan Nayak, a primary school teacher from West Bengal, and Hari Krishna Patacharu, an English teacher from Andhra Pradesh, made it to the top 50 shortlist for the 2023 Global Teacher Prize. The prestigious award celebrates educators from around the world, with the winner being chosen from the top 10 finalists.
  • The Global Teacher Prize, a USD 1-million annual award, is organised by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO and in collaboration with the UAE-based philanthropic organisation Dubai Cares. This esteemed recognition aims to acknowledge educators who have displayed extraordinary dedication and innovation in their teaching practices.

Dharmendra Pradhan Launches the Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav

  • Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav and inaugurated the two-day Technology & Bharatiya Bhasha Summit at New Delhi. The summit aimed to facilitate a seamless transition from the current education ecosystem to one rooted in Bharatiya languages, in line with the NEP-2020 vision and to set the course for a technologically enriched future for Bharatiya languages in education. An exhibition was also set up to showcase Bharatiya Bhasha technology products, and their applications by the industries, government organizations and start-ups. An inspiring moment was the presentation of a significant book by various officials to dignitaries, symbolizing the rich literary heritage of Bharatiya languages.
  • The summit, organized as part of the Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav, encompassed three pivotal thematic sessions: (i) Technology FOR Bharatiya Languages; (ii) Technology IN Bharatiya Languages; and (iii) Technology THROUGH Bharatiya Languages. Two technical sessions were held under the theme of 'Technology FOR Bharatiya Languages'. In these sessions, speakers and experts discussed ways and means to leverage technology for Bharatiya languages. The role of technology in the teaching-learning process of Bharatiya languages, the use of Machine Learning, Language modelling for speech recognition, Unicode standardization for Bharatiya language scripts, and other important aspects were also discussed in detail during these sessions. Both sessions were followed up with intense discussions among the audience and the speakers.

PM Modi Announces Centre to Establish Central Tribal University in Telangana's Mulugu

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Central government will be establishing a Central Tribal University in Mulugu district of Telangana.
  • The cost of the project will be Rs. 900 crore. The university will be named after the tribal goddesses— Samakka and Sarakka. The setting up of a Central Tribal University in Mulugu district will benefit the youth, especially those from tribal communities.
  • He also announced that the Central University of Hyderabad has been given the title of Institution of Eminence and provided it with a special fund.

Ministry of Tourism to Host PATA Travel Mart 2023 in New Delhi

  • Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, will be hosting the 46th edition of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Travel Mart 2023 at the magnificent International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC), Pragati Maidan, in New Delhi.
  • The Mart is scheduled to take place from October 4 to 6, 2023, bringing together tourism professionals and business stakeholders from across the world. The physical version of the Travel Mart is being held after a hiatus of three years due to the pandemic.
  • The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) founded in 1951, with its Head Quarters in Bangkok, is a renowned not-for-profit association recognized internationally for its role as a catalyst in the responsible development of travel and tourism in the Asia Pacific region. PATA Travel Mart is one of the important international trade exhibitions catering to the tourism sector and it serves as a platform for trade interactions between global buyers and sellers mostly from the Asia Pacific region. The Mart will bring together exhibitors and attendees from diverse sectors, offering a unique platform for networking, learning and collaboration.

Undertrials in Jail for Long should Get Bail even if Offence Serious: Bombay High Court

  • The Bombay High Court ruled that undertrial prisoners who have remained in jail for a long time should ordinarily be released on bail even if the crimes that they are accused of are serious.
  • Justice Bharati Dangre made the observation while granting bail to one Akash Chandalia accused of double murder, who had been in prison for the past 7.5 years.
  • The judge observed that depriving a person of personal liberty without ensuring speedy trial was not in consonance with Article 21 (right to life and personal liberty) of the Constitution of India.
