India Retains 40th Rank in Global Innovation Index 2023, Switzerland Tops

  • India retained its 40th rank out of 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index 2023 rankings published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
  • Switzerland for a 13th year ranked first in the index. Sweden second and the United States on third, followed by the United Kingdom (4th) and Singapore (5th).

Iran Successfully Launches Military's New Imaging Satellite

  • Iran's Revolutionary Guards successfully launched a third military satellite into orbit.
  • The Noor 3 imaging satellite was launched by the three-stage Qased, or messenger carrier, which launched its predecessor Noor 2 in 2022.
  • The US military has said that the long-range ballistic technology used by Iran to launch satellites may also enable it to launch long-range weapons, possibly even nuclear warheads.
  • Iran denies the US assertion that activities like satellite launch is a cover for development of ballistic missiles and maintains that it has never pursued development of nuclear weapons.

CDIL 1st Indian Firm to Make Silicon Carbide Chips, Starts Unit in Mohali

  • Continental Device India Pvt Ltd (CDIL) become the first company to start producing Silicon Carbide devices, used in electric vehicles (EV) and power electronics, in India. It opened a new semiconductor packaging line at its Mohali plant, taking its annual manufacturing capacity to 600 million units.
  • CDIL Semiconductors, which claims to be the first company to introduce silicon semiconductor technology in India in 1964, also partnered with the government's Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali. As per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and CDIL, the latter will utilise the semiconductor wafer fabrication facility for its new packaging unit.
  • The development came a week after MeitY invited commercial and technology players with the necessary technological and operational expertise to modernise the SCL facility that serves as the only semiconductor fabrication unit in the country.

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank MD & CEO Krishnan Resigns

  • The Tuticorin-based Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB)'s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Krishnan Sankarasubramaniam, resigned from the post, citing personal reasons.
  • This came within thirteen months since he was appointed on September 4, 2022.
  • Krishnan also served as the MD and CEO of Punjab and Sind Bank from September 4, 2020, to May 31, 2022. Krishnan was also the executive director of Canara Bank from April 1, 2020, to September 3, 2020, before joining Punjab and Sind Bank. Before Canara Bank, he served as the executive director of Syndicate Bank between November 1, 2017, and March 31, 2020.
  • The board of directors accepted the resignation of Krishnan. However, he shall continue to be the managing director and CEO, until guidance is received from RBI.

Adman Piyush Pandey to Step Down, Transition into Advisory Role at Ogilvy

  • Piyush Pandey, Ogilvy's chief creative officer worldwide and the executive chairman of its India office, will step down after a 41-year-long association with the agency. Devika Bulchandani, Global Chief Executive Officer of Ogilvy, announced Pandey's departure from the company, adding that he would continue in an advisory role.
  • Hephzibah Pathak will take on the role of executive chairperson of Ogilvy India. Group President V. R. Rajesh will take charge as CEO. The new change will come into effect from 1 January 2024.
  • The 41-year-long association between Pandey and Ogilvy began in 1982 when he commenced his career as a client-servicing executive.

ISS to Retire in 2031, NASA Initiates Plan to Bring it Back to Earth

  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) unveiled how it is planning to retire International Space Station (ISS), which is a unique space station currently in lower Earth orbit. The space station facilitates collaborative projects involving five participating space agencies: NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, ESA and CSA.
  • The ISS is often visible to the naked eye from Earth's surface as it is the largest artificial object in space and the largest satellite in low Earth orbit.
  • NASA disclosed the $1 billion plan to carry out the re-entry of ISS back to Earth as it said that it aims to develop a new orbital vehicle that will be vital in the process.
  • The International Space Station (ISS) was launched in 1998.

Palak, Esha Gold-silver in 10m air Pistol Makes it a Historic Day for India at Asian Games

  • Two teenaged dreamy-eyed shooters, Palak Gulia and Esha Singh, set ablaze the shooting range by powering to a gold-silver finish in 10m air pistol event for India at the Asian Games.
  • In one of the most trailblazing efforts seen by Indian shooters, the duo challenged each other for the top podium finish until Palak clinched the gold medal and Esha the silver to swell the country's tally in the sport to 17 -- 6 of them gold.
  • Pakistan's Talat Kishmala settled for a bronze after giving a tough fight to Esha.
  • This is the first major individual medal for Palak in an international competition after she came on the shooting scene just last year. She shot 242.1 in the finals for an Asian Games record.

Uttarakhand Government Signs MoUs in London

  • Uttarkhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, while participating in the roadshow organised for the Global Investors Summit in London, held a meeting with many leading business houses of London.
  • During this, investment MoUs worth Rs. 4800 crore were signed with different companies in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
  • Two separate MoUs worth Rs 3800 crore were signed with Kayan Jet and investment MoUs worth Rs. 1,000 crore were signed with Usha Breco.
  • An investment MoU of Rs. 2100 crore for developing skiing resort in Uttarakhand and Rs 1700 crore for cable car project was signed by Kayan Jet. It was agreed to develop skiing resort projects in Auli, Dayara Bugyal and Munsiyari by Kayan Jet. Along with this, it was agreed to develop ropeway in Haridwar and other districts by Usha Braco Limited, a leader in the field of ropeway. Various 80 business houses from education, tourism, IT, health sectors of London participated in the main event organized in London.

Taiwan Launches the Island's First Domestically made Submarine for Testing

  • Taiwan's President launched the island's first domestically made submarine for testing at a port in Kaohsiung. The submarine, if successful in its tests, will be a major breakthrough for Taiwan in shipbuilding and design.
  • The submarine, named Hai Kun, or literally "Sea Kun," is named for a type of fish found in Chinese literature called Kun, of legendary proportions. It took seven years of design and construction.
  • It will only be handed over to the military after passing both its harbor and ocean-faring tests. Taiwan plans to build another submarine if successful, with both to be deployed by 2027.

International Coffee Day

  • Every year, International Coffee Day is observed on October 1, to celebrate and promote the use of coffee. The day is marked to celebrate the coffee sector's diversity, quality and passion. Every year 77 Member States of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), dozens of coffee associates, and millions of coffee lovers come together to celebrate their favourite beverage.
  • For the first time, International Coffee Day was celebrated back in 2015. The International Coffee Organisation (ICO) decided to dedicate the day to all coffee lovers in 2014, but the first official International Coffee Day was launched in 2015 in Milan.
  • The International Coffee Organization (ICO) was set up in 1963 in London, under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) due to the economic importance of coffee. It administers the International Coffee Agreement (ICA), an important instrument for development cooperation.
  • The 2023 theme for International Coffee Day is 'Sustainability in Every Cup'.

International Day of the Older Persons

  • October 1 is observed as the International Day of Older Persons across the globe. The day was introduced by the United Nations General Assembly with an aim of honouring the contribution of older persons and looking into the problems that they face. Older people make significant contributions to society via volunteer work, passing on experience and knowledge, and assisting their families with different responsibilities. As today we celebrate this occasion, let's glance at its history and significance.
  • On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons (resolution 45/106). This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly.

Centre extends RoDTEP Scheme Nine Months

  • Amid faltering exports and tepid external demand, the Centre extended the tenure of the export-boosting scheme Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) for nine more months.
  • The scheme has now been extended until June 30, 2024 at the same rates for the existing export items.
  • The RoDTEP scheme, which refunds the embedded non-creditable central, state, and local levies paid on inputs to exporters, was due to expire on September 30. These taxes were not being refunded but were incurred by the export entities in the process of manufacture and distribution of exported products.
  • The scheme, notified on January 1, 2021, replaced the controversial Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) after a World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling stated that it violated the provisions of the global trade body by providing export subsidies for a wide range of goods.

THE Rankings 2024: Oxford University Best in World

  • As per the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings 2024, the UK's University of Oxford is the highest ranked university in the world with Stanford University taking second place, making it the top ranked university in the US, and in third place is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
  • The top 10 universities in the world are: University of Oxford, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Cambridge, Princeton University, California Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of California, Berkeley and Yale University.
  • In the top 10 of THE Rankings 2024, seven universities are from the US, while the other three are from the UK.

BITS Pilani, ICWA Ink MoU for Student Internships at Rajya Sabha

  • The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani signed an MoU with the Indian Council of World Affairs. Through this partnership, five BITS Pilani students will be selected for internships at Rajya Sabha. As a part of this partnership, BITS Pilani students will also be given the opportunity to visit Rajya Sabha as guests.
  • This MoU was announced by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, while he was on a visit to the institute along with Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal.
  • BITS Pilani is headed by Prof V Ramgopal Rao, who is the Vice Chancellor of the university, and has served as the Director of IIT Delhi from 2016 till 2021.

Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav, a 75 Day-long Event to Celebrate Indian Languages in Lucknow

  • Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav, a 75 day-long event to celebrate the Indian languages started in Lucknow. Padma shree awardees and representatives of different Indian languages are taking part in the program which includes Bahubhashi Sangoshthi, i.e. Multi-laguage conference and play based on Ramayan.
  • The festival will conclude on December 11 which is birthday of Famous Tamil poet Subrahmanyam Bharti and celebrated as Indian Languages Day.
  • The Additional Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar said that central government decided to celebrate Indian languages for 75 days under The Indian Languages Festival and many programs will be organised throughout the state to celebrate different Indian languages.
