Quad Foreign Ministers Meet on the Sidelines of UNGA

  • The Foreign Ministers of the Quad nations met in New York on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
  • The four top diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and advancing a vision for a region that is peaceful and prosperous, stable and secure, free from intimidation and coercion, and where disputes are settled in accordance with international law.
  • The focus of the meeting was to reiterate common ground and take stock of the Quad's existing initiatives.
  • The Quad or the Quadrilateral coalition is a plurilateral framework comprising India, Australia, Japan and the US formed in 2017 to counter China's aggressive behaviour in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region.
  • His Excellency Dennis Francis, Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, was elected as President of the 78th Session of the General Assembly. The election took place at United Nations Headquarters, in New York, on 1 June 1, 2023.

  • IT services major HCLTech extended its decade-old partnership with Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) with a new digital transformation deal for the bank's workplace operations across 33 countries.
  • HCLTech will provide ANZ with digital workplace services and experience management across end-user devices and applications, including laptops, mobile phones, and tablets.
  • One of Australia's four largest banks and the largest banking group in New Zealand and the Pacific, ANZ Banking Group provides banking and financial products and services to over 8.5 million retail and business customers. It operates in more than 30 markets globally with representation in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the Pacific, Europe, America, and the Middle East.

Asian Development Bank Appoints Bhargav Dasgupta as VP of Market Solutions

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) appointed Bhargav Dasgupta as vice-president for Market Solutions for three years. This development follows Dasgupta's resignation as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company.
  • Having joined ICICI Lombard in May 2009 as Managing Director and CEO, Dasgupta served the general insurance company for over 14 years. In his resignation letter, he highlighted his role in increasing the company's revenue sixfold and net profit by 78 times over the years.
  • Dasgupta also spearheaded ICICI Lombard's initial public offering, making it India's first listed general insurance company.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is a regional development bank established on December 19, 1966, which is headquartered in the Ortigas Centre located in the city of Mandaluyong, Metro Manila, Philippines. The bank also maintains 31 field offices around the world to promote social and economic development in Asia.
  • The bank admits the members of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP, formerly the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East or ECAFE), and non-regional developed countries. Starting with 31 members at its establishment, ADB now has 68 members.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Appoints Sanjeev Mantri as MD & CEO

  • ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company appointed Sanjeev Mantri as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company.
  • He will take over from Bhargav Dasgupta, who will be officiating his duties until the close of business hours on November 30, 2023.
  • Mantri will serve for a period of five years or his date of retirement, whichever is earlier, subject to approval from the IRDAI.
  • Mantri, who is a cost and chartered accountant, has over 20 years of experience and has held key leadership positions with BNP Paribas and ICICI Bank.

Archaeologists in Zambia Discover World's Oldest Wooden Structure

  • Archaeologists unearthed the oldest known wooden structure, and it's almost half a million years old.
  • The simple structure, found along a riverbank in Zambia, is made up of two interlocking logs, with a notch deliberately crafted into the upper piece to allow them to fit together at right angles, according to a new study of cut marks made by stone tools.
  • The oldest wooden structure, before the announcement out of Zambia, was just 9,000 years old. Meanwhile, the oldest known wooden artefact which was discovered in Israel, is said to be a 780,000-year-old fragment of plank.

NASA's First Asteroid Samples from Deep Space Land on Earth

  • In a flyby of Earth, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft released the sample capsule from 100,000 km (63,000 miles) out. The small capsule landed four hours later on a remote expanse of military land, as the mothership set off after another asteroid.
  • Scientists estimate the capsule holds at least a cup of rubble from the carbon-rich asteroid known as Bennu, but won't know for sure until the container is opened.
  • The pebbles and dust delivered on September 24 represent the biggest haul from beyond the moon.

ICC Announces Prize Money for World Cup 2023; Winners to Get USD 4 Million

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announces prize money for World Cup 2023. The winner of the upcoming ODI World Cup will get a prize purse of USD 4 million (approximately Rs. 33 crore) while the runners-up will get richer by USD 2 million (approximately Rs. 16 crore).
  • The ICC announced the prize money and incentives for all 48 matches to be played in the showpiece starting next month.
  • The two losing semi-finalists will get USD 800,000 (Rs. 6 crore approximately) each.
  • The other six teams who fail to qualify for the knockouts will get USD 100,000 (Rs. 82 lakh approximately) each, and the winner of each group stage match will get an incentive of USD 40000 (Rs. 33 lakh approximately).
  • A total of 10 million USD will be distributed by the ICC among all winning teams throughout the tournament.
  • This will be the 13th edition of the men's ODI World Cup, and 10 teams (India, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Netherlands) will feature in the tournament.

Prime Minister Modi Lays the Foundation Stone of an International Cricket Stadium

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the first international cricket stadium in Varanasi's Ganjari in Uttar Pradesh aimed at realizing his vision of developing world-class sports infrastructure.
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and a galaxy of cricket legends, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Gundappa Viswanath, Gopal Sharma and Ravi Shastri, attended the foundation laying ceremony of the first stadium of eastern UP.
  • The thematic architecture of the stadium draws inspiration from Lord Shiva, incorporating elements such as crescent-shaped roof covers, trident-shaped floodlights, and ghat steps-based seating arrangements.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government said that it has spent Rs. 121 crore to acquire the land for the stadium while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will spend Rs 330 crore on its construction.

Kovind-led Panel to Seek Parties' Views on 'One Nation, One Election'

  • Led by former President Ramnath Kovind, the panel on "One Nation, One Election" decided to invite political parties and the Law Commission to solicit their views on synchronised polls across India.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, former Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash C. Kashyap and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari attended the meeting. Senior advocate Harish Salve joined the meeting virtually while Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, leader of the single largest party in the Opposition, was not present at the meeting. After being named, Chowdhury had declined to serve on the committee.

Delhi to Host over 30 Countries at Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference

  • The national capital will host over 30 countries for the Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference from September 25 to 27.
  • The event is aimed at exchanging views and developing mutual understanding among the Indo-Pacific partners.
  • The conference will be a platform to exchange ideas and views on security, promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and develop mutual understanding and dialogue amongst the Indo-Pacific partners.
  • More than 20 Chiefs of friendly Armies are expected to take part in the main event including countries like the US, France and the UK.

Sri Lanka Signs Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

  • Sri Lanka signed the instrument of accession to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in the United Nations headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
  • Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Ali Sabry deposited the instrument of accession. The TPNW prohibits state parties from developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, acquiring, possessing or stockpiling nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.
  • The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), or the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty, is the first legally binding international agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons with the ultimate goal being their total elimination. It was adopted on July 7, 2017, opened for signature on September 20, 2017, and entered into force on January 22, 2021.

Indian Army's Annual Parade at Lucknow in January 2024

  • The Army decided that its annual parade will be conducted in Lucknow in January 2024.
  • Lucknow is the headquarters of the Army's Central Command that has been tasked with, among other areas, strengthening its position along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
  • In January 2023, the parade was conducted in Bengaluru, making it the first such Army Day Parade outside the Capital. A decision was taken to rotate the Army Day Parade venue across different cities in India.

Former Italian President Giorgio Napolitano Passes Away

  • Former Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, a onetime communist who helped to steer his country through a debt crisis in 2011, passed away at the age of 98.
  • The Italian presidency is usually mostly ceremonial, but Napolitano used his powers in late 2011 to stave off crisis by naming the former European Commission technocrat Mario Monti to lead a government following the resignation of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in a dispute over spending cuts.
  • Two years later, he broke another impasse when he installed a grand coalition under centre-left politician Enrico Letta after an inconclusive parliamentary election.
  • Napolitano became President in 2006 and was elected for an unprecedented second seven-year term in 2013. He stepped down in 2015, citing his age.

National Award-Winning Malayalam Filmmaker K. G. George Dies

  • Veteran Malayalam filmmaker and national award winner K. G. George died. He was 78.
  • He received the National Award for best feature film 'Swapnaadanam' (1976) and had also bagged nine state film awards since he started his film career in 1970.
  • 'Ulkaddal' (1979), 'Onappudava' (1978), 'Yavanika' (1982) and 'Adaminte Variyellu' (1984) are some of the best directorial works of the award winning director who was in 2015 selected for the J C Daniel Award—the Kerala government's highest honour for outstanding contribution to Malayalam cinema.
  • 'Panchavadi Palam' directed by George in 1984 is considered one of the best political satire films in Malayalam cinema.

World Pharmacists Day

  • Every year, World Pharmacists Day is celebrated on September 25.
  • The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Council first announced World Pharmacist Day in 2009 at the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Istanbul, Turkey. This day in 1912 saw the establishment of FIP. Promoting pharmacists' contributions to improving world health through their profession is the main goal of this day.
  • The theme for World Pharmacists Day 2023 is "Pharmacists strengthening health systems.

Antyodaya Diwas

  • Every year, Antyodaya Diwas is celebrated in India on September 25 to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and remember his life and legacy.
  • Antyodaya Diwas is a day of remembrance and celebration of his life and legacy and he was one of the most prominent figures in India's political history. He was a co-founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) and a thinker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Upadhyaya is also known for his efforts to uplift the poor and less fortunate, and so his birth anniversary is celebrated on Antyodaya, which means 'rising of the last'.
  • In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the day in honour of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. He was a leader and a veteran politician and had a key influence on Bharatiya Jana Sangh from which the BJP emerged.

Assam Govt. Launches Scheme to Give Rs. 2 lakh Each to Two Lakh Youth

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a new self-employment scheme - 'Mukhyamantri Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan' - designed to empower the state's youth. The scheme will provide financial assistance with the aim of fostering entrepreneurship, promoting self-sufficiency and self-employment.
  • According to the Chief Minister, the scheme is divided into two categories based on the educational qualifications of the applicants.
  • The first category includes unemployed degree holders in fields such as engineering, MBBS, BDS, agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishery. These individuals will receive government assistance of Rs. 5 lakh, half of which will be a subsidy, and the remaining amount will need to be repaid without interest.
  • The second category comprises unemployed postgraduates, general graduates, ITI, and Polytechnic pass-outs. They will receive government assistance of Rs. 2 lakh, with Rs. 1 lakh being a subsidy and the remaining amount repayable without interest.
  • However, students from Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) who have a minimum qualification of Class 10 are eligible for the first category assistance.
  • The age criteria for all applicants is set at 28 years, with the upper limit being 40 years for the general category and 43 for ST, SC, and OBC applicants.

India's First 'Medical Cobotics Centre' at IIIT Delhi

  • iHub Anubhuti-IIITD Foundation (Technology Innovation Hub of IIIT-Delhi) and iHub Foundation for Cobotics (IHFC, Technology Innovation Hub of IIT Delhi) inaugurated their joint medical facility, 'MCC-Medical Cobotics Centre' on the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, IIT Delhi campus.
  • The Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Government of India, funded this joint facility to be operated by iHub Anubhuti and IHFC under the NMICPS mission.
  • The Medical Cobotics Centre is aimed at being India's first state-of-the-art technology-enabled medical simulation and training facility for doctors, paramedics, technicians, engineers, biomedical researchers, and entrepreneurs. The Centre is also equipped to offer hands-on simulation training to the medical fraternity across the country.

UP Government's New Uniform Mandate for Schools to Combat Communicable Diseases

  • In a proactive move to curb the spread of communicable diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, and Chikungunya, the Uttar Pradesh government introduced new guidelines for schools across the state. Effective immediately, students attending council schools in Uttar Pradesh are required to wear full shirts and trousers as part of their school uniforms.
  • To enforce this directive, a circular has been dispatched to the basic education officers in all districts, instructing them to ensure compliance within their respective districts.
  • Additionally, each school will appoint a designated teacher as a nodal officer to oversee the implementation of this new uniform policy.
  • The decision to implement a dress code modification comes amid a rise in cases of communicable diseases in the state, particularly Dengue, Chikungunya, and Malaria.

Maharashtra Govt. Approves Scheme for Schools with Less than 20 Students to be Merged to Create Clusters

  • The Maharashtra government approved a new scheme of creating clusters of schools by merging multiple schools having enrolment of less than 20 students.
  • The idea is to combine them and create one big school wherein appropriate infrastructural can be provided to students along with a nurturing atmosphere with a great number of children in one campus encouraging healthy competition, sportsmanship and other aspects of holistic development of children.

  • The Biswanath Ghat of Sonitpur district in Assam was selected as the best tourism village of India 2023 by the Ministry of Tourism.

  • Biswanath Ghat, situated to the south of Biswanath Chariali Town, is famously referred to as 'Gupta Kashi.'
