China, Syria to Announce New Strategic Partnership
China and Syria announced the formation of a strategic partnership as Chinese leader Xi Jinping kicked off a series of diplomatic meetings ahead of the upcoming Asian Games.
China is one of only a handful of countries outside the Middle East that Assad has visited since the 2011 start of a civil war that killed more than half a million people, displaced millions and battered Syria's infrastructure and industry.
The Windergy India 2023 summit, a three-day event, will commence on October 4 at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam, Tamil Nadu. The event will host a significant delegation from Denmark, highlighting the Indo-Danish energy partnership and the strong relationship between the two countries.
Denmark's renewable energy capacity of 2.3 gigawatts positions it as a renewable energy exporter, and the summit will focus on the wind energy sector's evolution, including advanced generation technology and local manufacturing of key components such as gearboxes and generator blades.
The event also aims to explore opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the wind energy sector through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC).
Rupert Murdoch Steps Down as Chairman of Fox, News Corp
Australian-American business magnate and media proprietor Rupert Murdoch stepped down as the chairman of Fox Corp and News Corp, ending a more than seven-decade career during which he created a media empire spanning from Australia to the United States. He will step down as chairman of each board effective as of the upcoming Annual General Meeting of Shareholders of each company in mid-November.
His son, Lachlan Murdoch, will become the sole chairman of News Corp and continue as the chair and CEO of Fox.
RBI Proposes Lenders Identify 'Wilful Defaulters' Within Six Months
The Reserve Bank of India proposed that lenders should label defaulting borrowers as wilful defaulters within six months of an account turning non-performing.
The central bank identifies wilful defaulters as those who have the ability to pay a bank's dues but do not or divert bank funds. The RBI did not earlier have a specific timeline within which such borrowers had to be identified.
The regulator proposed that non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) should also be allowed to tag accounts using the same parameters.
TCS and BankAxept AS Partner to Enhance Norway's Payment System
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) entered into a partnership with BankID BankAxept AS, the provider of Norway's national payment and electronic identity systems. This alliance aims to establish and manage an operations command centre.
BankAxept, the dominant national payment system in Norway, facilitates 80 per cent of card payments in the country. Meanwhile, BankID serves as Norway's primary eID verification solution, relied upon by over 90 per cent of the population, as well as banks, public institutions, and commercial enterprises. New regulations mandate BankID to deliver users a compliant, trustworthy, and secure electronic identity solution, complemented by round-the-clock support.
As per the agreement, TCS will construct and oversee a 24x7 operations command centre in Oslo, Norway, catering to all BankID BankAxept AS users and clients. This facility will ensure responses to any service disruptions, security concerns, or client requests pertaining to Norway's crucial national payments and electronic identity verification systems.

India, Pakistan Attend Meeting in Vienna on Indus Water Dispute

Israel unveiled the next generation main battle tank Merkava Mark 5, also known as 'Barak', which translates to 'lightning' in Hebrew, which has incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and electronically controlled weapons.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that the Barak tank, represents an exceptional leap forward and showcases the military's technological capabilities, once again ensuring its qualitative advantage.
The tank, also known as the Merkava Mark 5 tank, is expected to become operational by the end of 2023 and will gradually replace the Merkava Mark 4, which currently forms the backbone of the Israeli armored corps, according to a separate statement from the military.

Internationally renowned river activist, Mark Angelo began a major cleanup event of the Thompson River in British Columbia, in September 1980. Upon its success in 2005, it came to be known as BC River Day. Following its success, Angelo proposed celebrating World Rivers Day.
Mark Angelo addressed the United Nations in 2005 during its Water for Life campaign, an effort to raise awareness about vulnerable water supplies throughout the world. In response to Angelo's proposal, the United Nations established World Rivers Day, to be annually celebrated on the 4th Sunday of every September.
