PFC Signs MoU with SJVN for Renewable Energy Projects

  • Power Finance Corporation (PFC) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-owned hydro power firm SJVN Ltd, committing to finance the latter's renewable energy and thermal power projects. The deal is valued at Rs. 1.18 trillion and aims to set up 12 gigawatt (Gw) of power generation capacity, predominantly from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and pumped hydro, along with a 660 megawatt thermal power project.

  • Wipro's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jatin Dalal resigned with immediate effect to pursue other career opportunities.
  • It came at a time when the IT firm has been battling several high-level exits in the recent past.
  • Dalal, a Wipro veteran for 21 years, was replaced by Aparna C. Iyer.
  • Over the years, Dalal has worked in diverse roles in the finance vertical. He was also on the investment committee of Wipro Ventures – the company's $100 million strategic investment arm that focuses on investing in early to mid-stage start-ups.

OpenAI Launches DALL-E 3 Image Generator with ChatGPT Integration

  • OpenAI released the third generation of DALL-E, its latest AI art tool. DALL-E 3 uses OpenAI's chatbot- ChatGPT, to create more complex and carefully composed works of art by automatically expanding on a prompt to give the generator more detailed and coherent instruction.
  • DALL-E 3 allows users to make accurate prompts for generating desired images through ChatGPT's conversational interface. It also lets users refine a creation through prompts generated by ChatGPT. Text generating ability of the AI-chatbot removes some of the complexity required to refine the text that is fed to the program.

TVS Motor Announces India's First Racing Tournament for Electric 2-wheelers

  • TVS Motor Company will on September 29 hold India's first electric two-wheeler racing championship, saying the event will be exclusively for its Apache RTE motorcycles.
  • The TVS Racing Electric One Make Championship (e-OMC) will see the debut of Apache RTE. The event will be held at the fourth round of Indian National Motorcycle Road Racing Championship (INMRC). The first round of the championship will have eight selected riders.

India Wins Bid to Host 17th International Congress on Chemistry of Cement

  • India has won the bid to host the prestigious International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement (ICCC) at New Delhi in 2027.
  • India's leading research and academic institutes, National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM) along with IIT Delhi successfully presented the India's bid before the Steering Committee members of the Conference during the 16th ICCC at Bangkok, Thailand. Besides India, other bidders were from Switzerland and UAE. The Indian bid was presented by L. P. Singh, Director General, NCCBM, S. K. Chaturvedi, Joint Director, NCCBM and Shashank Bishnoi, Professor (Civil Engg.), IIT Delhi.
  • The International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement is the largest and most prestigious event of its kind which reviews the progress of research in the area of Cement and Concrete. The congresses have been held generally at intervals of four to six years since 1918, providing a strong and fruitful link between the academic world and the cement industry. The 9th Congress was organized at New Delhi in 1992 by NCCBM and the present 16th ICCC was held at Bangkok, Thailand from 18-22 September 2023.

President Inaugurates First Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show

  • President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the first Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show in India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida. The trade show is being held from September 21 to 25. Governor of state Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister of UP Yogi Adityanath and Industrial Minister Nand Gopal Nandi were also be present on the inaugural function.
  • Over 2000 exhibitors will showcase their products across a wide spectrum of sectors, including automobiles, handicrafts, healthcare, food processing, pharmaceuticals, dairy, electronics, and e-commerce.
  • State government departments and institutions, along with Mumbai Dabbawala, will conduct informative sessions on various business activities. Additionally, 108 new start-ups are also participating in the show.

ASEAN Kicks Off its First-ever Joint Military Drills in Indonesia

  • Units from the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held their inaugural joint military exercises in Indonesia's South Natuna Sea. These drills came at a time of escalating geopolitical tensions between major global powers and rising concerns over China's activities in the South China Sea.
  • The five-day military operation, which took place in the South Natuna Sea, primarily focused on enhancing military skills. These skills encompassed areas such as maritime security, patrols, and the distribution of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. According to the Indonesian military, this exercise aimed to promote regional stability and cooperation among ASEAN members.
  • All ten member nations of ASEAN, including prospective member East Timor, participated in these joint military drills. The decision to hold this collaborative exercise underscored the commitment of ASEAN countries to maintain regional stability and enhance their collective security. It also sent a strong signal of unity among member states in the face of rising geopolitical tensions.

Akhil Mishra, '3 Idiots' Fame Actor, Passes Away

  • Actor Akhil Mishra, best known for his role in 3 Idiots, died. He was 67.
  • Akhil Mishra played the librarian, Dubey, in 3 Idiots and had some comical scenes in the film. He has also been part of films like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Well Done Abba, Calcutta Mail and Shah Rukh Khan's Don. On television, he has been part of shows like Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori Se, Uttaran, Pardes Mein Mila Koi Apna and Shrimaan Shrimati among others.

Bharatanatyam Exponent Saroja Vaidyanathan Dies

  • Bharatanatyam dancer Saroja Vaidyanathan died, after battling cancer, at the age of 86.
  • The classical dancer was conferred the Padma Shri in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013. Vaidyanathan was known for her extensive contribution to Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music in the form of 10 full-length ballets and nearly 2,000 choreographies.
  • Vaidyanathan also wrote books, including 'The Science of Bharatanatyam and The Classical Dances of India', 'Bharatanatyam– An In-Depth Study'.

World Rhino Day

  • World Rhino Day, celebrated on September 22 every year, offers a unique opportunity for organisations, conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide to come together and celebrate the magnificent rhinoceros. The day is dedicated to spread awareness and support the conservation efforts to save all five species of the rhinoceros.
  • The crisis of the rhinoceros began in Africa in 1990. By 2010, it became a nationwide crisis. More people understood that rhinoceros are becoming endangered so they expressed their concerns over the problem.
  • The situation became grave when only 30,000 rhinos were alive at that time all over the planet. It was during that time that the World Wildlife Fund – South Africa introduced World Rhino Day to talk more about the crisis and find ways to prevent it.
  • Later in 2011, a woman called Lisa Jane Campbell wrote a mail to a rhino lover, Rhishja expressing her interest to see at least five species of rhinos alive in the world. This is how World Rhino Day came into existence and people celebrate it every year across the nations on the same date.
  • World Rhino Day was first celebrated on September 22, 2011 but was first announced by World Wildlife South Africa in 2010.

Day for the Welfare of Cancer Patients

  • World Rose Day or the Day for Welfare of Cancer Patients is marked every year on September 22 dedicated to individuals suffering from cancer across the globe.
  • World Rose Day was initiated to honour a 12-year-old cancer patient known as Melinda Rose from Canada. In 1994, Melinda was detected to be suffering from Askin's Tumor, which is a rare type of blood cancer tumour that grows on the chest wall.

Science Awards to Get Makeover as Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar

  • On the lines of civilian awards, Government of India will now recognise scientists with Rashtriya Vigyan Puruskar under four categories — Vigyan Ratna, Vigyan Shri, Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, and Vigyan Team — said Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh.
  • This came days after the government released the finalised list of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardees that was held back for a year. The highest honour for young scientists retains the name Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.
  • Vigyan Ratna recognises the lifetime achievement of scientists, Vigyan Shri recognises distinguished contributions to a field, Vigyan Yuva Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar encourages young scientists who have made exceptional contributions in their field, and Vigyan Team recognises teams of three or more. The awards will commence in 2024.
  • The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards, given by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research since 1958 across seven domains, will now be given across 13 categories to young scientists up to the age of 45 for exceptional contributions in any field of science and technology.

Economist Shankar Acharya New Chancellor of AP Central University

  • Veteran economist and former chief economic advisor to the government of India, Shankar Acharya, was appointed as the chancellor of Andhra Pradesh Central University.
  • Previously, Acharya worked as an economic advisor in the ministry of finance. He also served as India's longest-serving Chief Economic Advisor (CEA), who advised three successive finance ministers: Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha for eight years between 1993 and 2001.
  • During the latter part of his tenure as the CEA, Acharya also served as a member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
  • He has also worked in the World Bank, where he led the team for the World Development Report 1979 and then served as a research advisor to the bank. Since 2001, Acharya has been an Honorary Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Health Ministry Reduces NEET PG Cut-off to Zero Percentile for this Year

  • The Union health ministry decided to reduce the qualifying percentile for leftover postgraduate (PG) seats in medical colleges to zero, a move that the Indian Medical Association (IMA) hailed but others in the medical profession have characterised as bizarre.
  • In other words, this means that all candidates who appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (PG), 2023, are now eligible for admission to seats that may still be available in MD/MS courses following two rounds of counselling, as there are no minimum qualifying marks.
  • In response to the order, the IMA — the largest network of doctors in India — issued a statement thanking the health minister and saying it had requested the government to do this.
  • Before this, the cut-off percentile for admission to PG seats during the first two rounds of counselling had been 50 for the unreserved category, 45 for the PwD (persons with disabilities) category and 40 for reserved-category students.

Shivraj Chouhan Inaugurates Adi Shankaracharya Statue

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan unveiled the 108-feet tall 'Statue of Oneness' of Adi Shankaracharya on the bank of the Narmada River at Omkareshwar, approximately 260 km from the state capital Bhopal, six years after it was conceptualised.
  • The statue weighs 100 tons and has been installed on a 75 feet high platform. It is made up of bronze that contains 88% copper, 4% zinc and 8% tin. The statue internal structure is made-up of high-quality steel.
  • Adi Shankaracharya, as per Hindu religion scholars, is credited with restoring the glory of Sanatan Dharma in ancient India with his preaching and debate with scholars.

  • London-based Indian-origin author Chetna Maroo's debut novel 'Western Lane' was shortlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize.
  • Kenya-born Maroo's novel set within the context of the British Gujarati milieu was praised by the Booker judges for its use of the sport of squash as a metaphor for complex human emotions. It revolves around the story of an 11-year-old girl named Gopi and her bond with her family.

IndiGo Announces Codeshare with British Airways

  • India's largest domestic airline and budget air carrier IndiGo announced a codeshare partnership with British Airways. With the announcement, IndiGo further enhanced its partnership with international airlines across the globe. This is the second codeshare partnership by IndiGo with a United Kingdom based airline. The air carrier already has codeshare partnerships with Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Air France-KLM, Australian carrier Qantas and Virgin Atlantic.
  • Codeshare is a partnership between two airlines that allows an airline to place its two-letter identification code on the flight schedules of another airline. This means that flights can be marketed by one airline and operated by another.
