Dhananjay Joshi Appointed Chairman of Telecom Industry Body DIPA

  • Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) appointed Dhananjay Joshi, MD and CEO of Summit Digitel, as the Chairman.
  • DIPA also named Sandeep Girotra, CEO of American Tower India, as the new vice chairman of the association.
  • The Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) is a non-profit industry body that represents the digital infrastructure industry in India. It was founded in 2010 as the Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TIPA), but was renamed DIPA in 2020 to reflect the broader scope of its membership.
  • DIPA's mission is to promote the growth and development of the digital infrastructure industry in India.

Sashidhar Jagdishan Reappointed as HDFC Bank MD & CEO

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the reappointment of Sashidhar Jagdishan as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive officer (CEO) of HDFC Bank for three years starting from October 27, 2023.
  • In March 2023, HDFC Bank board had recommended the re-appointment of Jagdishan for a period of three years.
  • Jagdishan took charge as the MD & CEO of the largest private-sector lender in October 2020, after Aditya Puri retired.
  • Jagdishan, who has an overall experience of 31 years in the industry, joined the bank in 1996 as a manager in the finance function.

IREDA Signs MoU with Bank of Maharashtra for Financing Renewable Energy Projects

  • Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), a Mini Ratna (Category – I) Government of India enterprise under the administrative control of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bank of Maharashtra (BoM). This collaboration aims to promote and facilitate co-lending and loan syndication for a diverse spectrum of Renewable Energy projects across the nation.
  • The MoU comprises several services including co-lending and co-origination support for all Renewable Energy projects, facilitating loan syndication and underwriting, management of Trust & Retention Account for IREDA borrowers, and a commitment to establishing stable fixed interest rates spanning a period of 3-4 years for IREDA borrowings. Under this agreement, Bank of Maharashtra can invest in the Bonds issued by IREDA in accordance with the specified terms and conditions of the offering.
  • The MoU was signed by General Manager (Technical Services), IREDA, Bharat Singh Rajput and General Manager (Retail & MSME Credit), Bank of Maharashtra, Rajesh Singh at IREDA's Business Centre, New Delhi.

NASA's Parker Solar Probe Gets Closest to Sun

  • NASA's Parker Solar Probe marked a historic milestone by becoming the first spacecraft to fly through a coronal mass ejection (CME) directly from the sun — a colossal eruption which expels billions of tonnes of plasma.
  • The audacious probe that was launched in August 2018 now holds the distinction of being the closest human-made craft to the sun.
  • NASA's Parker Solar Probe spent two days at a mere 5.7 million miles (9.2 million kilometres) from the sun's scorching surface.

Indian Shooter Elavenil Valarivan Wins Gold Medal in ISSF World Cup 2023

  • Indian shooter Elavenil Valarivan won the gold medal in the women's 10 metre air rifle event at the ISSF World Cup 2023 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Olympian Elavenil Valarivan shot 252.2 from her series of 24 shots in the final and narrowly beat France's Oceanne Muller. A total of eight shooters qualified for the final. This was Elavenil Valarivan's second individual ISSF World Cup medal.
  • Earlier, Elavenil Valarivan finished 9th in the qualification round with 630.5. The Rio meet was the last rifle and pistol ISSF World Cup of 2023. The ongoing event in the Brazilian city will be followed by the finals in Doha, Qatar, scheduled from November 18 to 27. India sent a 16-member squad for the ISSF World Cup.

Old Parliament Building to be Called Samvidhan Sadan

  • As the proceedings of the Parliament shifts to the new building, the Prime Minister announced the new name of the old parliament building which will be called 'Samvidhan Sadan' (Constitution House). The old Parliament Building which was designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker and was completed in 1927 witnessed some of the great moments in Indian history like the passing of India's Constitution.

Tenth Meeting of India-Malaysia Joint Sub-Committee on Defence Science

  • The 10th meeting of India-Malaysia Joint Sub-Committee on Defence Science, Technology and Industry Cooperation was held in New Delhi. The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (Naval Systems), Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence Rajeev Prakash and Under Secretary, Defence Industry Division, Ministry of Defence, Malaysia Eris Jemadi bin Tajudin.
  • During the meeting, the existing defence research and industry cooperation between the two countries was reviewed and discussions were held on issues pertaining to mutual interest. Both sides explored effective and practical initiatives to further expand the ongoing interactions related to the defence industry sector.

  • India's defence capabilities received a significant boost with the development of the P-7 Heavy Drop Parachute System, an indigenous marvel designed to enhance the paradropping capabilities of the country's Armed Forces. This innovative system, entirely developed within India, promises to revolutionize the way military stores are paradropped on the battlefield.
  • This system is fully indigenous and made under the Make in India program.
  • The system would be a force multiplier for armed forces while enabling the rapid delivery of combat stores in far-flung inaccessible areas.
  • The parachute guarantees the secure delivery of heavy cargo, even under challenging conditions.
  • With a maximum load-bearing capacity of 8,500 kg and a permitted payload limit of 7,000 kg, the system operates at drop speeds ranging from 260 to 400 kph, showcasing its adaptability to different scenarios.

  • The Breakthrough Prize Foundation announced the winners of the 2024 Breakthrough Prizes, honouring an esteemed group of the world's most brilliant minds for impactful scientific discoveries, including a subset responsible for substantial progress in the understanding and treatment of major diseases.
  • The Breakthrough Prize, popularly known as the 'Oscars of Science', was created to celebrate the wonders of scientific age by founding sponsors Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, Julia and Yuri Milner, and Anne Wojcicki.
  • The Prize's latest slate of laureates include 11 winners of the Breakthrough Prizes in Life Sciences, Fundamental Physics, and Mathematics, sharing five $3 million prizes between them; 12 early-career physicists and mathematicians sharing six $100,000 New Horizons in Physics Prizes; and three women mathematicians who recently completed their PhDs, each receiving a $50,000 Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize. This year's prize money comes to a total of $15.75 million, bringing the amount conferred over the thirteen years of the Breakthrough Prize to $308 million.

Government Introduces Women's Reservation Bill

  • The Women's Reservation Bill that seeks to provide 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies was introduced in the Lok Sabha in the ongoing special session of Parliament. Calling September 19 a historic day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Opposition to unanimously pass the Bill - 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' - that has been hanging for nearly three decades.
  • Women account for almost half of the country's 950 million registered voters but make for only 15% of parliament and about 10% of state legislatures.
  • Women's Reservation Bill
  • The, Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, seeks to introduce three new articles and one new clause in the Constitution.
  • 1. New clause in 239AA: Seats shall be reserved for women in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, 1/3rd of the seats reserved for SCs shall be reserved for women, 1/3rd of total number of seats to be filled by direct elections shall be reserved for women through law determined by parliament.
  • 2. New Article - 330A: Reservation for women in Lok Sabha - 1/3rd of seats reserved for SCs and STs shall be reserved for women, 1/3rd of total seats to be filled by direct elections to the Lok Sabha shall be reserved for women.
  • 3. New Article - 332A: Reserved seats for women in every state Legislative Assembly, 1/3rd of seats reserved for SCs and STs shall be reserved for women, 1/3rd of total seats to be filled by direct elections to the LA shall be reserved for women.
  • 4. New article - 334A: Reservation shall come into effect after the delimitation is undertaken after the relevant figures for the first census have been published. Rotation of seats for women shall take effect after each subsequent exercise of delimitation.
  • A bill to provide reservation for women in Parliament and assemblies were first introduced in the Lok Sabha in 1996 by the Deve Gowda-led United Front government. It failed to get the approval of the House

Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu Announces Rollout of 'Mukhya Mantri Shramik Kalyan Yojana'

  • Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the rollout of a new scheme titled 'Mukhya Mantri Shramik Kalyan Yojana' for the welfare of the labour force of the state. He made this announcement while addressing a function in Itanagar. Khandu said that incentives for workers registered with the Arunachal Pradesh Building and other Construction Workers Welfare Board were revised in this scheme.
  • Under the scheme, maternity benefit for families of workers was enhanced from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 6,000; natural death compensation from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 2 lakh and accidental death compensation from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh.

Himachal Pradesh Launches 'School Safety' App for Disaster Management Plans

  • The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has developed a mobile app to help schools prepare a School Disaster Management Plan.
  • Competitions for all schools will be organised to encourage the best preparation of the School Disaster Management Plan (SDMP).
  • To incentivise participation and excellence in preparing the SDMP, the top school will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, the next three best entries will receive Rs. 50,000 each and the other six best entries will receive Rs. 30,000 each.
  • The SDMP, prepared until September 30, 2023, will only be considered for prizes to be given on October 12.

Australian University of Wollongong to Establish GIFT City Campus in by 2024

  • Australia's University of Wollongong (UOW) is going global, with a new campus set to be launched in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India by July 2024.
  • UOW and Deakin University received permissions from the International Financial Services Centre Authorities (IFSCA) to establish their international campuses in GIFT City.
  • The UOW GIFT City campus aims to welcome its first 500 students by July 2024, with a focus on finance and business.
  • UOW aims to leverage the global network of institutions it brings to GIFT City and the fact that it offers a hub for students from various countries to actively study together.

IIT Gandhinagar Wins International Green University Award 2023 for Promoting Environmental Sustainability

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) won the International Green University Award 2023. The award presented by the Green Mentors, USA is a non-government organisation with special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
  • This award ceremony was held at the 7th NYC Green School Conference conducted at the Cornell University, USA.
  • The International Green University Award acknowledges universities worldwide that have integrated sustainability into their core values, operations, and academic programmes for community and student engagement and have implemented sustainable practices such as energy-efficient infrastructure, renewable energy solutions, waste reduction and recycling programmes, and sustainable transportation initiatives.

Supreme Court, NALSA launch Undertrial Review Committee Special Campaign 2023

  • The Supreme Court of India and the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) launched a nationwide campaign to expedite the identification and review of prisoners who are eligible to be considered for release from jails.
  • The campaign termed 'Undertrial Review Committee Special Campaign 2023' was launched by Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul who is also the Executive Chairperson of NALSA.
  • The campaign is taking place from September 18 to November 20, 2023 and will cover all districts in India.
  • The campaign aims to enhance the current operations of the Under Trial Review Committees (UTRCs) which were established pursuant to the directions of the Supreme Court in 2015. These UTRCs are led by District & Sessions Judges and include District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, Secretaries, District Legal Services Authorities and officers-in-charge of prisons as members.
