India Jumps Seven Places in Digital Quality of Life Index Survey
When it comes to maintaining the overall digital quality of life, India still lags behind China globally, a report showed.
The Digital Quality of Life (DQL) Index by cyber-security company Surfshark is an annual study that ranks 121 countries by their digital wellbeing based on 5 core pillars -- internet quality, internet affordability, e-security, e-infrastructure and e-government.
The 5th DQL study ranks India 52nd in the world, up from 59th last year.
The increase is largely due to the country's surge in internet quality, for which it now ranks 16.
Hindalco Announces Tech Partnership with Italian Firm to Make Rail Coaches
Aditya Birla Group's Hindalco Industries announced a partnership with Italy-based Metra SpA in large-size aluminium extrusion and fabrication technology to build high-speed aluminium rail coaches in India.
The tie-up provides Hindalco the launching pad to drive the ambitious upgradation programme of Indian Railways that runs the world's largest rail network.
Hindaclo had earlier announced plans to invest Rs. 2,000 crore for a project to produce passenger coaches for Vande Bharat trains. The technology alliance will provide cutting-edge technology for this effort. In August 2023, Hindaclo entered into a strategic alliance to develop and manufacture aluminium rail wagons and coaches with Texmaco Rail & Engineering.
RBI Releases Direction for the Settlement of Loan Account
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) asked all banks, non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) to release all the original movable/immovable property documents and remove charges registered with any registry within a period of 30 days after full repayment/settlement of the loan account.
These directions are part of the central bank's responsible lending conduct for regulated entities (REs).
The borrower shall be given the option of collecting the original movable/immovable property documents either from the banking outlet/branch where the loan account was serviced or any other office of the RE where the documents are available, as per her / his preference.
The timeline and place of return of original movable/immovable property documents will be mentioned in the loan sanction letters issued on or after the effective date.
In case of delay in releasing of original movable/immovable property documents or failing to file charge satisfaction form with relevant registry beyond 30 days after full repayment/settlement of loan, the RE shall communicate to the borrower reasons for such delay. In case where the delay is attributable to the RE, it shall compensate the borrower at the rate of Rs. 5,000 for each day of delay.
Citibank India Launches WFH Option for 12 Months Post Maternity Leave
Citibank India launched a work-from-home (WFH) option for its women employees who can now request to work from home for up to 12 months at the end of their maternity leave of 26 weeks.
This potentially provides a cumulative period of 21 months of working from home for expecting and new mothers.
In June 2021, the Centre issued an advisory to the state and union territory governments to encourage WFH for nursing mothers.
Citibank India is among the first organisations to implement the maternity-linked WFH initiative. Earlier, ICICI Bank, under Chanda Kocchar, had launched iWork@home an initiative that allowed one year WFH for women based on their requirements.
Germany Signs U.S.-led Space Norms Pact Artemis Accords
Germany became the 29th country to sign the Artemis Accords, a U.S.-led multilateral agreement meant to establish norms of behaviour in space and on the lunar surface.
The signing marked a key addition to a growing slate of countries aligning their space policies and standards of cooperation with the United States, as nations including China and India eye the moon as stage for technological advances and national prestige.

Haryana Govt Appoints Actress Mita Vashisth as Chair of Entertainment Policy Council

ED Director Sanjay Kumar Mishra Step Down
Enforcement Directorate (ED)'s director Sanjay Kumar Mishra stepped down. The Centre had sought from Supreme Court of India that Mishra's tenure be extended till October 15, which the top court granted, albeit reducing a month from the demand.
The Supreme Court in July had noted that S. K. Mishra's tenure as the ED chief was extended till September 15 in view of 'national interest'. The court had clarified that no further application seeking an extension would be entertained.
Sanjay Mishra had become an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer in 1984. Prior to his stint as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stint, Mishra was posted as chief commissioner of Income Tax in Delhi.
A global company and an Indian firm joined hands to bring the world-leading Articulated All-Terrain Vehicle (AATV), the 'BvS10', to the Indian defence market. BAE Systems and Larsen & Toubro teamed up to bring the AATV to the country under the 'Make in India' programme.
The two companies have signed an agreement to offer the BvS10 for an Indian armed forces programme.
Under the agreement, L&T is the prime bidder for the Indian market, with the support of BAE Systems Hagglunds, the Swedish manufacturer of the highly successful BvS10 family of vehicles.
International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (informally and simply called World Ozone Day) is celebrated on September 16 designed by the United Nations General Assembly.
The history of World Ozone Day is very eminent. A resolution was initiated and accepted in the Vienna Convention to protect the Ozone Layer on 22 March, 1985. This resolution has been initiated after discovering a hole through the Ozone Layer. With the adoption of the resolution, the Montreal Protocol on Substances which exhausts the Ozone Layer was implemented on September 16, 1987. In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed September 16 as World Ozone Day.
Every year World Ozone Day signifies a theme to fulfil it with dignity. This time the theme for World Ozone Day 2023 theme is 'Montreal Protocol: Fixing the Ozone layer and reducing climate change'.
International Red Panda Day
Every year, International Red Panda Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in September — September 16 in 2023 — to spread awareness regarding yet another species that is near extinction.
The day was launched by the Red Panda Network in 2010, and the first International Red Panda Day was celebrated in September that very year (2010). Since then, the need to continue honouring the day has only increased due to global warming and climate change.
The Union Cabinet approved the expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in order to add 75 lakh poor households to the scheme's beneficiary base over three years at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,650 crore. The nod to PMUY expansion and the scheme of release of grant to public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) for the same followed the government's August 29 announcement of slashing cooking gas prices for all domestic consumers by Rs. 200 per cylinder and expanding the beneficiary base of PMUY to 10.35 crore from 9.60 crore at present.
The price cut and expansion of PMUY, which came ahead of Assembly elections in five states later this year and the Lok Sabha elections next year, was described by the government as its gift to the people on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam.

AI Courses to be Introduced Soon in Government Schools in Punjab
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his Delhi counterpart and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the state's first 'School of Eminence' in Amritsar before addressing the Sikhiya Kranti Rally.'
At the rally Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that courses in artificial intelligence will soon be introduced in government schools across the state.
One lakh students will be imparted training in artificial intelligence while training will also be given to 10,000 teachers for teaching the courses.

SC Collegium Recommends 18 High Court Additional Judges for Appointment as Permanent Judges
The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud recommended the names of seven additional judges of the Allahabad High Court and 11 of the Punjab and Haryana High Court for appointment as permanent judges.
Those who have been recommended for appointment are Justices Umesh Chandra Sharma, Renu Agarwal, Ram Manohar Narayan Mishra, Mayank Kumar Jain, Shiv Shanker Prasad, Gajendra Kumar and Nalin Kumar Srivastava of the Allahabad High Court.
Those who have been recommended for appointment as permanent judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court are Justices Nidhi Gupta, Sanjay Vashisth, Tribhuvan Dahiya, Namit Kumar, Harkesh Manuja, Aman Chaudhary, Naresh Singh, Harsh Bunger, Jagmohan Bansal, Deepak Manchanda and Alok Jain.
