Sarbananda Sonowal Represents India at the Eastern Economic Forum, 2023 Held in Vladivostok

  • The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal represented India at the Eastern Economic Forum held at the Russian port city of Vladivostok. The Minister met Alexey Chekunkov, Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic; Vitaly Saveliev, Minister for Transport of Russia among others with an objective to maintain strong ties and foster strategic, trade and logistical cooperation across various sectors. Eastern Economic Forum, 2023: The 8th Eastern Economic Forum 2023 took place on 10–13 September 2023 in Vladivostok on the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) campus. The Eastern Economic Forum is a key international platform for establishing and strengthening ties within the Russian and global investment communities, and for comprehensive expert evaluation of the economic potential of the Russian Far East, the investment opportunities it offers, and business conditions within advanced special economic zones.
  • The Eastern Economic Forum was established by decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in 2015 to support the economic development of Russia's Far East and to expand international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dhaka, Paris Sign Bilateral Instruments on Infrastructure, Satellite System

  • Dhaka and Paris signed two instruments regarding Bangabandhu-2 Satellite and improvement of urban infrastructure in Bangladesh.
  • The instruments were signed and exchanged in presence of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and French President Emmanuel Macron at the Karobi Hall at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
  • The instruments are - Credit Facility Agreement between Economic Relations Division (ERD), Bangladesh and the France Development Agency (AFD), France on 'Improving Urban Governance and Infrastructure Program' and Letter of Intent (LOI) on Cooperation between Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) and Airbus Defence and Space SAS, France related to Bangabandhu-2 Earth Observation Satellite System.

NASSCOM Appoints SAP Lab's MD, Sindhu Gangadharan as Vice Chairperson

  • The National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) appointed Sindhu Gangadharan, Senior Vice President (SVP) and Managing Director (MD) of SAP Labs India and the head of SAP user enablement, as its new vice chairperson. In this new role, Gangadharan will help shape India's TechAde.
  • She also serves on boards of organisations, including Siemens India and Titan Company Ltd. Gangadharan. She is also a member of the Steering committee of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, an industry body driving the bilateral trade and deliberations between India and Germany. She also holds a position on the advisory board of YuWaah, supported by UNICEF.

AU Small Finance Bank Partners Star Health and Bajaj Allianz

  • AU Small Finance Bank entered into two distribution partnerships with two insurance companies - Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance and Star Health and Allied Allied Insurance.
  • The Jaipur-headquartered small finance bank will distribute the insurance products of these two companies through its network of 1,038 touchpoints. The bank has a customer base of 41 lakh. In addition to this the company will also offer the insurance products through its digital channels.
  • In the case of Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, AU SFB will distribute the term insurance, savings and retirement products.

Cashfree Payments Launches Customer on-Boarding

  • Cashfree Payments, a financial technology company, launched 'AutoPay on QR' in collaboration with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • The feature enables customer on-boarding through a two-step workflow of scanning a QR code and approving an e-mandate via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps within 30 seconds.
  • As per the company, 'AutoPay on QR' eliminates the necessity to download an app or register on a website as it directly activates a unique subscription for every customer.
  • The feature will enhance customer acquisition, support retention, and facilitate growth for subscription-based businesses.

NASA Astronaut Frank Rubio Breaks US Record for Longest Spaceflight

  • Rubio surpassed the US space endurance record of 355 days at the International Space Station. He arrived at the outpost in September 2022 with two Russians for a routine six months. But their stay was doubled after their Soyuz capsule developed a coolant leak while parked at the space station.
  • The trio will return to Earth on September 27 in a replacement capsule that was sent up empty for the ride home.
  • By then, Rubio will have spent 371 days in space, more than two weeks longer than Mark Vande Hei, the previous US record holder for a single spaceflight, Russia holds the world record of 437 days, set in the mid-1990s.

Virat Kohli Becomes Fastest to Reach 13,000 ODI Runs

  • India's Virat Kohli became the fastest batter to reach 13,000 ODI runs during the Asia Cup Super 4 against Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The 34-year-old record of fellow Indian veteran Sachin Tendulkar (321 innings), was achieved by Kohli in just 267 innings. He reached his 47th ton in ODIs. With this century, Kohli has now scored four consecutive 100s at this stadium, the joint-most highest centuries at a single venue alongside South African great Hashim Amla. The other three tons were against Sri Lanka— two of which came in 2017 and one in 2012.
  • Kohli completed 13,000 ODI runs, becoming the fifth player to reach the landmark in men's ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene are the others before him to reach the milestone. He became the quickest batter to reach this mileston, Ponting (341) and Sangakkara (363) took over 300 innings too while Jayasuriya reached the mark in 416 innings.

Former Wimbledon Champion Simona Halep Gets Four-year Ban

  • Former world number one Simona Halep was given a four-year suspension from tennis following breaches of the sport's anti-doping programme, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said.
  • The Romanian tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat last year (2022) and was charged with a separate second anti-doping breach in May relating to irregularities in her athlete biological passport (ABP).
  • Halep, a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, had been provisionally suspended since October 2022. An independent tribunal said this would count in her period of full suspension, which will now run from October 7, 2022 to October 6, 2026.

President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates First Global Symposium on Farmers' Rights

  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the First Global Symposium on Farmers' Rights in New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the farming fraternity of the world is its foremost conserver and they are the true guardians of crop diversity. She further said that the farmers are bestowed with exceptional power and responsibility. She emphasised that we all must appreciate farmers' endeavour to protect and revive many varieties of plants and species whose existence is crucial to all of us.
  • This Symposium was organised by the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (International Treaty) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Rome and hosted by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in collaboration with Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights (PPVFR) Authority, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), and ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR).

India and Saudi Arabia Sign Agreement on Cooperation in Energy Sector

  • India and Saudi Arabia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of energy to develop a stronger partnership between India and Saudi Arabia in the field of energy.
  • The MoU was signed by Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power R. K. Singh who represented the Indian side and Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud present in the meeting for the Saudi side.
  • As per the MoU, India and Saudi Arabia will cooperate in the Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Hydrogen, Electricity and Grid Interconnection between the two countries, Petroleum, Natural Gas, Strategic Petroleum Reserves and Energy Security.
  • The agreement will also encourage bilateral investment in the field of Renewable Energy, Electricity, Hydrogen and Storage; and Oil and Gas and will promote digital transformation, innovation and cyber-security and artificial intelligence in the field of Energy.

Gopal Baglay Appointed India's High Commissioner to Australia

  • Senior diplomat Gopal Baglay was appointed as India's High Commissioner to Australia.
  • A 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Baglay was India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
  • Prior to serving as India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Baglay served as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office.
  • He served in various capacities in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, including as the official spokesperson of the Ministry, joint secretary (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran) Division, director in the External Affairs Minister's Office and in the United Nations Division and deputy secretary looking after Eastern and Central Europe.
  • Baglay has also served as the deputy high commissioner of India in Pakistan, counsellor for Press, Information and Culture in the Embassy of India, Nepal and in other diplomatic capacities from 1994-2002 in Ukraine, Moscow and London.

Noted Rudra Veena Exponent, Ustad Ali Zaki Hader Passes Away

  • Noted Rudra veena exponent, Ustad Ali Zaki Hader, passed away in New Delhi. He was 50. Disciple of Ustad Asad Ali Khan, Ali Zaki Hader was the last exponent of the Khandarbani (Khandaharbani) style of the Jaipur Beenkar gharana of Dhrupad. With his untimely demise, this ancient tradition of Rudra veena came to an abrupt and tragic end.
  • Rudra veena is a sizable plucked string instrument employed in Hindustani music, particularly in the style of music known as dhrupad.
  • It is one of the main veena kinds used in Indian classical music and is renowned for its deep bass resonance.

CSIR Honours 12 Scientists with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for 2022

  • The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) announced the names of the winners of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) awards for 2022, after nearly a year's delay. The list of 12 scientists across seven categories, chosen for the coveted award in the field of science and technology, was released by CSIR.
  • The award honours scientists from seven disciplines of physics, biology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, chemistry and earth sciences.

  • Dr. Maddika Subba Reddy also received the award for her notable achievements in regard to biological sciences.

  • Dr. Debabrata Maiti was awarded for his research work in the field of chemical sciences.
  • Dr. Vimal Mishra was honoured for his contributions in the fields of earth, atmosphere, ocean and planetary sciences.
  • Dr. Dipti Ranjan Sahoo received the prize for his achievements in engineering.
  • Dr. Rajnish Kumar received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for 2022 for his work in fundamental research in the field of engineering.

Ayushman Bhava to Ensure Delivery of Health Schemes

  • 'Ayushman Bhava' a campaign to ensure optimum delivery of health schemes to every intended beneficiary, including those in the last mile, was launched by the President of India.
  • Ayushman Bhava is an umbrella campaign comprising Ayushman Apke Dwar 3.0 which is aimed at creation and distribution of Ayushman cards to all remaining eligible beneficiaries; Ayushman Mela as part of which weekly health melas will be held at the level of AB-HWCs and Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Ayushman Sabha, a village/ward level sabha to be held to enhance awareness about various health care schemes and services.
  • With the successful implementation of all the above initiatives, the campaign will eventually ensure gram/nagar panchayat to attain the status of 'Ayushman Gram Panchayat' or 'Ayushman Ward' with saturation of selected health indicators.

West Bengal Unveils New State Education Policy

  • The government of West Bengal announced a new state Education Policy (SEP), a move that has been celebrated as a "bold step towards inclusive education" by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
  • The SEP encapsulates the existing framework for school education and incorporates several noteworthy features.
  • In a notification issued by the West Bengal education department on September 9, it was detailed that the state's 5+4+2+2 school structure would continue.
  • This structure translates into a year of pre-primary followed by four years of primary education until Class 4, then two years of secondary and two years of higher secondary education.
  • Some of the key features of the West Bengal state education policy are:
  • Three-language policy: A three-language policy to be introduced for Classes 5 to 8 to strengthen the federal spirit of the Constitution.
  • Focus on mother tongue: Mother Tongue to be made the medium of instruction in school. Eg: Nepali, Santhali, Rajbanshi and Bengali.
  • 5+4+2+2 pattern: School education to follow a 5+4+2+2 pattern to preserve the importance of board exams.
  • Holistic development: Challenging coursework, extracurricular activities and career counselling to be emphasised.

Coding and AI to be Introduced in UP Schools from 2024

  • In a pivotal shift towards technology-oriented education, the Uttar Pradesh education department announced plans to teach the basics of coding, computational thinking and artificial intelligence (AI) to students in state-run schools starting from the academic session of 2024-25.
  • Previously deemed a skill set for the tech-savvy, coding and computational capabilities have now taken centre stage as fundamental cognitive tools instrumental in the holistic development of learners.
  • The inclusion of coding lessons in the curriculum aligns with the mandate set by NEP-2020, demonstrating the significant role technology plays in modern education.
  • Developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), the course will be integrated as part of the existing science curriculum.

  • An independent international school in Gujarat and a charity school in Maharashtra were among worldwide institutions unveiled in London as finalists of the annual World's Best School Prizes 2023.

  • Snehalaya English Medium School in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, is credited with transforming the lives of children living with HIV/AIDS to make the final three in the 'Overcoming Adversity' category.
  • The winners of the five prizes across all categories will be chosen by an expert Judging Academy, based on rigorous criteria and unveiled in November. A prize of USD 250,000 will be equally shared among the winners, with each receiving an award of USD 50,000.
  • In addition, digital media platform T4 Education has launched a new "Community Choice Award" this year open to the 15 schools that make up the Top 3 finalists across all five World's Best School Prizes.

Indian Navy, Uber Team Up for Private Travel of Naval Personnel, Families

  • The Indian Navy joined hands with cab aggregator Uber to provide reliable, convenient, safe and economical mobility solutions for personal travel and commute of naval personnel and families across the country. The Navy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uber in the presence of Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar and senior officials of the company.
  • This MoU aligns with Chief of Naval Staff's vision of 'happy personnel' under 'SHIPS FIRST' and is a maiden initiative in the armed forces. It is also in furtherance of Government of India's 'Digital India' vision of embracing technology for transformative change.

Hinduja Group to Reopen Old War Office of Churchill as Luxury Hotel

  • Hinduja Group collaborated with Raffles Hotels & Resorts to restore The Old War Office (OWO) of Britain's World War II-era Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
  • The property with 120 guest rooms and suites, along with restaurants and spas, will be inaugurated on September 26 as a brand-new luxury hotel in the heart of London.
  • The Hinduja Family had acquired the landmark building on Whitehall, opposite Downing Street, over eight years ago. The Old War Office, originally completed in 1906 and designed by British architect William Young, was formerly the site of the original Palace of Whitehall.

Central Government Clears Appointment of Two Additional Judges of Karnataka High Court as Permanent Judges

  • The Central government cleared the appointment of two additional judges of the Karnataka High Court as permanent judges.
  • Additional judges Justices Anant Ramanath Hegde and K. S. Hemalekha were made permanent judges.
  • The term of Justice Siddhaiah Rachiah as additional judge was extended by a period of one year with effect from November 8, 2023.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium on August 31 recommended that Justices Hegde and Hemalekha be made permanent judges of the High Court.
  • While the High Court Collegium had recommended that Justice Rachiah also be made permanent, the apex court's Collegium recommended that his term as additional judge be extended by a year.
  • The Karnataka High Court is functioning with a strength of 51 judges (40 permanent and 11 additional judges) (as in September2023) as against its sanctioned strength of 62.
