ASEAN, India Agree to Make Concerted Efforts

  • Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India agreed to make concerted efforts to increase cooperation in food security, nutrition, food trade supply chain, cultivation of millets, and financing for climate-friendly technologies. This was agreed upon in the ASEAN-India Joint Leaders' statement on strengthening food security and nutrition in response to crises. The 20th ASEAN-India Summit was held on September 7, 2023 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
  • Member countries of ASEAN and India expressed their commitment to exchange information on national policy frameworks particularly for rice and other priority crop commodities to enhance food security and nutrition. Acknowledging the nutritional richness, climate resilience, health benefits and ecological sustainability of millets, they also supported efforts for the cultivation and harvesting of millets for ensuring global food security.

  • United Breweries Limited (UBL), part of the Heineken Company, appointed Vivek Gupta as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Effective from 25 September.

Groww Mutual Fund Receives SEBI Approval to Launch Its First Index Fund

  • Online stock broking firm Groww received the approval of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch its first index fund, Groww Nifty Total Markets Index Fund, through new fund offering (NFO).
  • According to sources, Groww Mutual Fund submitted draft documents with the SEBI on September 5 for the launch of its index fund.

West Bengal Assembly Resolution on 'Poila Baisakh' As State Foundation Day

  • The West Bengal assembly made a significant decision by passing a resolution to officially observe Bengali New Year's Day, known as Poila Baisakh, as the state's foundation day on April 15.
  • This decision came amid controversy and disagreements over the date chosen for this celebration. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been a strong advocate for this change, emphasising that the day will be observed irrespective of the approval of the state's governor.
  • The resolution, put forth under Rule 169, proposes the observance of Poila Baisakh as 'Bangla Diwas' and seeks to declare Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's masterpiece, 'Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol' (Bengal's soil, Bengal's water), as the official state song. This historic decision was passed with a majority vote of 167 members in favour out of a total of 294 members in the House. However, not everyone in the assembly was in agreement.

BJP-JDS Alliance for Lok Sabha Polls, Seat-sharing Finalised

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (Secular) have 'in principle' agreed to join hands in Karnataka for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, former Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa said.
  • As per reports, JD(S) supremo H. D. Deve Gowda met BJP chief J. P. Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the structure of the alliance.
  • According to the seat-sharing formula agreed upon by Gowda and the BJP's top brass, the JD(S) will contest in four Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka, which has a total of 28 constituencies.

Indian Air Force and Drone Federation of India to Co-host Bharat Drone Shakti 2023

North Korea Launches First 'Tactical Nuclear Attack Submarine'

  • North Korea launched its first 'tactical nuclear attack submarine' which has been built as part of its plan to strengthen its naval force.
  • The unveiling ceremony was presided over by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who said that the new submarine was part of a push forward with the nuclear weaponization of the Navy in the future.
  • The submarine's launch, which has been named the 'Hero Kim Kun Ok', heralded the beginning of a new chapter for bolstering up the naval force of the DPRK.

Director-actor G. Marimuthu Passes Away

  • Popular Tamil actor and director G Marimuthu died at the age of 58.
  • G Marimuthu was known for his bold opinions, which often became a topic of debate on social media.
  • He had worked in over 50 movies, apart from directing movies and acting in TV shows. In 1990, G. Marimuthu left his hometown of Pasumalaitheri in Theni and moved to Chennai with dreams of becoming a film director.
  • Initially, he worked as a waiter in hotels, but soon he crossed paths with lyricist Vairamuthu, and eventually landed a role as an assistant director working with Rajkiran on films like Aranmanai Kili (1993) and Ellame En Rasathan (1995). Marimuthu continued his career as an assistant director, collaborating with renowned filmmakers such as Mani Ratnam, Vasanth, Seeman, and SJ Surya. He also worked as a co-director on Silambarasan's Manmadhan.

World First Aid Day

  • Every year, World First Aid Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in September. In 2023, World First Aid Day was celebrated on September 9.
  • In 1859, during the battle of Solferino, a young businessman Henry Dunant was horrified with the mass massacre, and he helped a lot of injured people to get better. The incident impacted him so much that he wrote a book called 'A Memory of Solferino' where he spoke of his experiences. Later he co-founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) - the organisation is dedicated to providing first-aid care and creating awareness about it. The organisation declared World First Aid Day in 2000. Since then, the day has been celebrated every year.
  • The theme for World First Aid Day 2023 is 'First Aid in the Digital World'.

  • As part of the Academia Industry Partnership, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts will assist SRM IHM in delivering sessions on professional excellence by participating in regular guest lectures and workshops moderated by corporate employees and hotel GMs. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts will also facilitate tailored internship and placement opportunities at their hotels in the region, offering SRM IHM students vital hands-on experience in order to prepare them for the hospitality industry upon graduation.

India Wins Gold at International Olympiad for Informatics

  • This year (2023), a team of four students went to the International Olympiads for Informatics. It is one of the top five science olympiads across the world. India has been participating in international competition for the last 22 years and this year, the Indian team won a gold medal after nine years. This is the second time the Indian team has bagged gold at the International Olympiad for Informatics, the last time was in 2014.
  • India was represented by four students and they all won medals. Kshitij Sodani secured a gold medal, Paras Kasmalkar and Shreyan Ray got silver medals and Sushil Raaja U won a bronze medal. The contingent was led by Madhavan Mukund, director of Chennai Mathematical Institute and Jatin Yadav of IIT Delhi. The competition was held in Szeged, Hungary.

World's Tallest 'Nataraja' Statue Takes Centre Stage at G20 Summit Venue

  • In a remarkable display of artistry and cultural significance, a colossal 'Nataraja' statue, believed to be the world's tallest, was meticulously installed at the prestigious venue of the G20 Summit in Delhi. This awe-inspiring 28-foot tall statue, inclusive of its pedestal, has been crafted using the ancient lost-wax technique of metal casting, echoing the remarkable artistry of the famed Chola bronzes from the past.

  • The lost-wax process, a time-honoured tradition in sculptural craftsmanship, has its roots dating back to the era of the Cholas, whose bronze creations continue to be treasured today. In this intricate metal casting method, molten metal, often bronze, gold, or silver, is poured into a mold created using wax or similar resin-like materials. Once the metal cools and solidifies, the wax model is melted and removed, leaving behind the exquisite artwork.

MoU Signed Between Supreme Court of India & Supreme Court of Singapore for Judicial Cooperation

  • India and Singapore signed a memorandum of understanding on judicial cooperation in the island city-state. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud and his Singapore counterpart Sundaresh Menon witnessed the signing of the MoU between the Supreme Courts of two the nations.
  • Earlier, Justice Menon had visited India and even sat on the Supreme Court of India bench in February 2023.
  • Justice Menon, who is serving as the fourth Chief Justice of Singapore since 2012, had attended a function to mark the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court. Justice Menon was the chief guest at the function.
